Join us for an exhibit at Conference House Park, Lucy Wilner: Us and Them, Birds at the Intersection of Natural and Man-made Worlds, on display through July 23.

Wilner’s paintings explore the realms of imagination evoked by today’s new ecological and trans-species consciousness. Far from naturalistic, they present symbolic relationships, especially those between human beings, our histories, tools, and environments, and the natural world.

Gallery hours: Monday - Saturday, 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. / Closed holidays / Free admission

Opening reception: Saturday, May 13, 2017 / 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

For the second annual GROW Brooklyn Festival in Crown Heights, organizations in urban farming, culinary arts, and technology will come together for a fun-filled afternoon to bring greater awareness of Diversity Through Food. GROW Brooklyn Festival will celebrate New York City's multiculturalism by inviting organizations to showcase activities that highlight their own culture, with the aim to encourage visitors to embrace the garden-to-kitchen movement, and promote cultural diversity through cuisine.

The Garden Row will teach attendees of all ages how to garden within their urban environment. Interactive demonstrations will include basil & lettuce seedlings give away and cultivation, red worm composting, retrofill water systems creation, beekeeping, honey tasting from the Five Boroughs, workshop on raising hens to lay eggs, pepper tasting from all over the world, and making of seed bombs.

The Culinary Row will showcase the beauty and taste of home-grown food by offering rich, diverse and yet still simple culinary demonstrations. This year’s offerings will include organic baby and toddler food, Middle Eastern recipes, and delicious flavors from Afghanistan and Venezuela as cooked by asylum seekers, as well as onsite enrollment for food stamps and information on maximizing food stamp benefits.

The Technology Row will bring to life how technology and creativity can enhance our appreciation of good food and healthy living. Interactive educational and creative activities will feature sustainability video games with fruits and vegetables connecting to Makey Makey devices, textile decorating with natural plant dyes, a drawing contest and games with the teachers and students of the Computer Resource Center at St. John’s Recreation Center, and the Computer School.

This event is free, and features live music performed by Pop and R&B singer Usen Isong. For more information, please visit GROW Brooklyn Festival's website.

Closed to the public in 1934, the Hallett Nature Sanctuary remained mostly untouched until 2001, when Central Park Conservancy took up a more comprehensive program of restoration and maintenance. Now, visitors can use the rustic trail to view native plantings that attract birds and other wildlife. Join our guides for this exclusive tour of the Hallett Nature Sanctuary, open to visitors only on Central Park Conservancy guided tours and during limited open hours.

PIP will provide you with breakfast, lunch, and a t-shirt.

All volunteer days are rain or shine.

All participants (ages 16 and older) must register in advance. Volunteers can sign up nyjl.org/playground Please RSVP if you are interested in participating in one or more park days (April 22, 23, 29, 30 and May 6, 7, 13, 20, 21). Registration closes when capacity is reached or the Wednesday prior to that weekend's park days.

About the New York Junior League Playground Improvement Project
For more than 25 years, the Playground Improvement Project (PIP) has been a New York Junior League signature community project. Our volunteers create safe, beautiful, well-organized, and educational play spaces for children and other members of the New York City community. PIP focuses on sites and parks that need major renovation and have the greatest impact on the surrounding community. Weekend cleanup days include landscaping and repairing the parks. We work with over 700 volunteers each season to help improve the park and make a positive impact on the community. Please reach out to playground@nyjl.org with any questions or if you are interested in making a donation to this cause.
