For experienced* high school rowers, ages 14 to 18, this summer-long competitive camp meets five days a week, Mondays through Fridays, from 7:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m., on the historic Harlem River.

Athletes train with experienced coaches from a variety of competitive collegiate rowing programs. Rowing is a great way to distinguish your child’s college resume, and our seasoned coaches are always available as a resource to discuss rowing at a higher level. We work on enhancing rowing skills and technique in both sweep and sculling boats.

Along with rigorous training, participants compete in select regattas throughout the summer season. For those who are considering rowing at the collegiate level, this camp is the perfect addition to develop their talent.

*Previous rowing experience is defined as at least 10 months of previous rowing experience and/or race experience in at least four high school-level regattas. All participants are selected for this program at our coaches discretion.

Plant Patterns features the work of Adam Frezza & Terri Chiao, Adrienne Elise Tarver, Karin Haas, Liesl Pfeffer, and Nick Wildermuth. The artists use plants’ impressive natural characteristics as a means to explore various themes in their graphic works. Domestic and wild flora have provided artists with inspiration for centuries. The diversity and multitude of plant colors, shapes, and repetitive forms, which evolved to lure pollinators, caution predators, and promote regeneration, are naturally appealing to artists’ sensibilities.

The event intends to showcase the similarities and differences of Ugandans’ daily life compared to that of an American displaced in the Bronx. Of the 3.2 million foreign born residing in NYC, the Bronx is home to the largest concentration of African born immigrants compared to other boroughs.

Cinderella Samba is a contemporary twist on the classic “Cinderella” fairy tale. The CityParks PuppetMobile production sets the timeless tale in the lush landscape of Brazil, where, thanks to the help of her fairy godmother, Cinderella attends Rio de Janeiro’s biggest Carnival gala and dances the samba with Prince Paulo himself. After Cinderella is forced to flee the gala just before midnight, the prince sets out to find the mystery woman who stole his heart, in hopes of marrying her.

The lively production features an original commissioned musical soundtrack that brings samba center-stage; handcrafted Carnival festival floats on parade; and one-of-a-kind marionettes donning their most vibrant Carnival costumes, created by the expert puppeteers from the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theater in Central Park.

Join Village Community Boathouse's special new public rowing program on Van Cortlandt Park Lake in the Bronx!

Rowing is a beautifully simple, healthy, and empowering sport, and the ample waters of the lake are an ideal place to pursue its pleasures.

Community rowing is free and open to all; no experience or reservations necessary. Sessions run every Friday from 4:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. starting June 23 until September 1st. Boat rides last about 30 minutes. We have a mixture of small and large boats. The smaller boats are good for an adult and a child, while the larger boats can fit a whole family. Boats are launched from the south end of the lake.

Who Can Participate
Community rowing is open to all, although some physical dexterity is required to get in and out of the boats. The focus of the program is recreation in a safe and respectful environment. Each participant must sign a waiver; kids and teens younger than 18 must be escorted by a parent. Life jackets are provided—and must be worn!

What You'll Row
We use a diverse fleet of traditional wooden rowing boats, built by volunteers and similar in shape and appearance to those used in the early days of park rowing.

How the Villiage Community Boathouse is Funded
We are a nonprofit organization entirely run by volunteers. While no commitment is required from those who row with us, our facilities, boats and equipment require regular upkeep and repair. The park is surrounded by a large and diverse population that needs more access to on-water recreation.Your donations make our program possible. If you're looking to volunteer, please email volunteers@vcb.nyc.

Henry V
By Wm. Shakespeare
Directed by Nicholas Martin-Smith

The horrors of war throughout time have changed little and that is made even more apparent in this immediate and visceral production of
Henry V. Led by a war time correspondent, we follow King Henry as he politically positions himself and his subsequent military campaign across France in his quest to take what he believes is rightfully his.

This iconic, deeply textured ,1991 independent film written, directed and produced by Julie Dash is the first feature film directed by an African-American woman distributed theatrically in the United States. Set in South Carolina in 1902, this stunning film tells the story of three generations of Gullah women in the Peazant family on St. Helena Island as they prepare to migrate to the north on the mainland. This award-winning feature stars Lee Day, Alva Rogers, Barbara-O, Trula Hoosier, Vertamae Grosvenor, and Kaycee Moore. Noted for its lush visuals and non-linear storytelling, Daughters of the Dust was selected for the Sundance 1991 dramatic competition where cinematographer Arthur Jafa won the top cinematography prize. For a breath of fresh air, take your workouts outdoors. Parks are becoming a logical alternative environment for those who want to add variety to their work outs, or who just don't like the gym. And, it's an affordable way to increase physical activity opportunities, because there's nothing special to build.

Come to Fort Tryon Park and try something new. Join us on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday mornings for one hour of walking, stretching, and strengthening exercises.

All of our fitness programs are free, led by trained professionals, and suitable for all levels. Wear comfortable clothing and bring water.

Exercising with a view, in natural sunlight, with green scenery all around bestow health benefits that can’t be found indoors. Scientific studies have shown that the pleasure of being outdoors gives your brain, psyche, and immune system an extra boost.

Please note: Fitness programs are canceled if the weather is lower than 20 degrees and when there are icy conditions. Please check back for rain and weather/air advisory cancels.

The Hattie Carthan Community Farmers Market is opening for its ninth season of healthy food, activities, education and food justice programming. The Hattie Carthan Community Farmers Market has engaged hundreds of local youths, distributed over 10 tons of fresh food ,recycled 24 tons of organic waste via its market compost dropoff operation, hosted 240 community market sessions, delivered 550 cooking demonstrations, 16 bread baking workshops and more in its eight seasons of operation.

2017 brings several new initiatives to the Market. This season, our newly formed food justice collective will introduce food justice activities around the newly constructed food justice mural. The market continues to grow its youth program in order to employ, educate, and empower local teenagers through the Hattie Carthan Urban Agriculture Youth Corps. Through strategic partnerships with local partners, the markets have introduced bus stop and subway advertisements, author readings in our children's garden, and weekly deliveries to Head Start and hospital outpatient centers. Our Healthy Gains through Baking with Whole Grains takes place in the cooking island area in September. The markets will continue to offer individuals and institutions an opportunity to receive local vegetables, local eggs and herbs by subscribing to our alternative distribution programs: The Mixed Basket Weekly and Institutional Basket Program.

The Bronx Meets East Africa is an exhibition showcasing East African artists and their emerging relationships to the Bronx community. The artwork featured will focus on the following themes: The drive to feed one’s family, to provide a decent shelter for self and loved ones, to belong, and to leave a legacy.

The event intends to showcase the similarities and differences of Ugandans’ daily life compared to that of an American displaced in the Bronx. Of the 3.2 million foreign born residing in NYC, the Bronx is home to the largest concentration of African born immigrants compared to other boroughs.

More creatures live in the soil than any other environment on Earth! We’ll go on a soil organism safari and gain a better understanding of what the soil ecosystem looks like and how soil biodiversity is crucial for health. This workshop will introduce you to fascinating facts and traditional techniques that will help you support soil life in your own garden or farm.

Registration requested.

The NYC Compost Project, created by the NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY) in 1993, works to rebuild NYC’s soils by providing New Yorkers with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities they need to make and use compost locally. NYC Compost Project programs are implemented by DSNY-funded teams at seven host organizations, including Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Big Reuse, Earth Matter NY, Lower East Side Ecology Center, Queens Botanical Garden, Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden, and The New York Botanical Garden. All canoe programs are for ages 8 years and older. Participation in a manadatory safety review led by a trained Ranger is requied.
