Join NYC Parks for a special concert featuring Taikoza. Taikoza has created a new sound using the thunderous rhythms of the ancestral Taiko drums and the magical sounds of the bamboo flutes. Roughly translated, Taiko means big drums, and that’s exactly what Taikoza brings—big drums, powerful rhythms, and electrifying, room-thumping energy. This exciting group draws from Japan’s rich tradition of music and performance to create a highly visual performance.

About Taikoza
Taikoza was formed in New York City by members of Ondekoza (the group that started the renaissance of Taiko in Japan in the 60s and introduced Taiko to the world). The members of Taikoza have performed on stages and parks around the world.

Brooklyn Queens Land Trust (BQLT), in partnership with Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) Our Streets, Our Stories oral history project, is piloting an initiative to collect, preserve, and document stories from BQLT community gardens.

Gardeners, board members, community supporters, and activists are invited to be involved as an interviewer and/or storyteller for this project. Preserve our history. Tell your story. Community gardens strengthen our neighborhoods and provide recreation, beauty, and environmental access. BQLT’s gardens represent an extraordinary group of racially, culturally, and economically diverse people who share recognition of the worth of public, open spaces for improving the quality of city life. The stories behind each garden, the members, and leadership are unique and important.

Our Streets, Our Stories is an ongoing oral history project of the Brooklyn Public Library’s Department of Outreach Services that seeks to explore the Brooklyn that is, and the Brooklyn that was, from the words of the community that lives here. BQLT and BPL aim to document stories from these gardens, and preserve the collection in BPL’s database.

To participate, please contact Moriba Jackson by email at info@bqlt.org, call (718) 963-7020, or register online here.

The Inwood Shakespeare Festival was conceived and developed by Ted Minos as a way to bring free professional theatre and music to the Northern Manhattan community. NYC Parks is delighted to partner with Moose Hall Theatre Company in their high-caliber productions of Shakespeare for the wonderful communities of Inwood, Washington Heights, Harlem, and beyond!

“Comedy, love and a bit with a dog, that’s what they want” – Henslow from Shakespeare in Love by Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard

With William Shakespeare’s 400 anniversary in mind, we’re featuring what many believe to be his earliest play—Two Gentlemen of Verona. See star-crossed lovers, cross-dressing, betrayal, intrigue, clowns, and a real dog! . . . Comedy with a pastiche of romance, melancholy, and a startling conclusion.

Directed by Ted Minos. Technical director/Costumes, Catherine Bruce. Music, Luke St. Francis. Fight choreography, Ray A. Rodriguez. Assistant director, Maya Kates. Graphic art, Lee Kaplan. Produced by Ted Minos for Moose Hall Theatre Company.

The New York State Pavilion, once the shining star of the 1964-65 World’s Fair, now sits in the middle of New York City as a haunting reminder of what became of the age of optimism that was the early 1960s. This film, by Matthew Silva, tells the story of Philip Johnson’s masterpiece during its glory days, chronicles its post-fair use as a 60s concert venue and 70s roller rink, and shines a spotlight on the years of neglect that have led to growing advocacy to save and restore this one-of-a-kind place.

Feel free to bring your own chair or blanket.

In case of inclement weather, the screening will take place inside the theater. Food and drinks will be available for purchase.

Wreck-It Ralph longs to be as beloved as his game's perfect Good Guy, Fix-It Felix. Problem is, nobody loves a Bad Guy. But they do love heroes... so when a modern, first-person shooter game arrives featuring tough-as-nails Sergeant Calhoun, Ralph sees it as his ticket to heroism and happiness. He sneaks into the game with a simple plan -- win a medal -- but soon wrecks everything, and accidentally unleashes a deadly enemy that threatens every game in the arcade. Ralph's only hope? Vanellope von Schweetz, a young troublemaking "glitch" from a candy-coated cart racing game who might just be the one to teach Ralph what it means to be a Good Guy.

Marking Socrates Sculpture Park’s 30th anniversary this year, the institution presents Landmark, a series of artist commissions and projects that transforms the land both physically and symbolically. Once an industrial landfill and illegal dumping ground, Socrates has transformed itself into New York City’s preeminent sculpture park and social space for public art, community engagement and urban discovery. Landmark directly addresses the idea of place as intimately tied to social and ecological structures, to maintenance and stewardship, and to evolution over time.

Landmark features eight different artist projects including a newly commissioned major earthwork by Meg Webster. Additional artists in the exhibition include Abigail DeVille, Brendan Fernandes, Cary Leibowitz, Jessica Segall, Casey Tang, the curatorial collective ARTPORT_making waves, and a Broadway Billboard by Hank Willis Thomas. Since its inception in 1986, Socrates and the surrounding area of Queens, New York has rapidly changed. Whether by engaging directly with the land or commenting on the neighborhood’s cultural and economic shifts, each artwork in Landmark reflects historic transformations in the making.

The Jamaica Bay BioBlitz is a celebration and exploration of the biodiversity in and around this urban estuary. The BioBlitz will take place on Friday, June 10 and Saturday, June 11 at Jacob Riis Park and at Marine Park. This is a 24-hour event. Volunteers will sign up for a shift.

Registration
Volunteers should register for specific survey times (beginning at 1:30, 5:30 and 8:00 pm on Friday June 10, 2016 and 6:00, 8:00 and 10:00 am on Saturday, June 11, 2016). You are welcome to participate in as many surveys as you want.

About the BioBlitz
A BioBlitz is a biological survey where volunteers work alongside scientists and expert naturalists to find and identify as many species as possible over a short time period. It is an opportunity to learn about what lives and grows in the natural areas that surround our neighborhoods and communities. It is an opportunity to become more connected to our surroundings, increase our understanding of biodiversity, and become empowered to protect the places and spaces where nature exists.

We will use an app called iNaturalist to record species data for the 2016 Jamaica Bay BioBlitz. The app will make gathering data easy and fun - plus you don’t have to be an expert! Just snap and post a picture and experts in that field will review and identify the species. If you want to use your smart phone or tablet and the iNaturalist app, you can create an account at inaturalist.org/signup (works best if you do it from a computer and not your phone). Once you have an account, you can join the 2016 Jamaica Bay BioBlitz 2016 National Parks BioBlitz - Gateway: Jamaica Bay BioBlitz. We will also offer short iNaturalist tutorials throughout the BioBlitz to help you learn how to use the app.

But don't worry - species observations can also be recorded the old fahioned way - pencil and data sheet. You don't need to have a smart phone or be tech savvy to participate in the BioBlitz. We will even provide the pencils and data sheets!

The 2016 Jamaica Bay BioBlitz is hosted by Gateway National Recreation Area and New York City Department of Parks and Recreation. Riis Park is one of two locations from which BioBlitz surveys will begin.

City Parks Foundation offers a traveling puppet show, CityParks PuppetMobile, the oldest continually operating company of its kind in the country, which presents free performances and puppet-making workshops in neighborhood parks, recreation centers and schools throughout New York City.

The CityParks PuppetMobile presents the classic Puss in Boots tale, with a twist. Once upon a time there lived a young man named Ferguson Mundingle. Fergus has just the bare essentials in life – a roof over his head, the clothes on his back, and his ever faithful pet cat. One day when lamenting his poor lifestyle, Fergus is astounded when his cat stands up, begins talking and introduces himself as Puss. Puss reveals to Fergus that he is very intelligent and well traveled, and even has an idea to help Fergus improve his situation. With that in mind, Puss dons a snazzy pair of boots and sets off on an exciting magical journey. Despite his reputation as a sly trickster, Puss soon proves himself a caring friend to all, willing to help at any cost!

Emotions run wild in the mind of a little girl who is uprooted from her peaceful life in the Midwest and forced to move to San Francisco in this Pixar adventure from director Pete Docter (Up, Monsters Inc.). Young Riley was perfectly content with her life when her father landed a new job in San Francisco, and the family moved across the country. Now, as Riley prepares to navigate a new city and attend a new school, her emotional headquarters becomes a hot bed of activity. As Joy (voice of Amy Poehler) attempts to keep Riley feeling happy and positive about the move, other emotions like Fear (voice of Bill Hader), Anger (voice of Lewis Black), Disgust (voice of Mindy Kaling) and Sadness (Phyllis Smith) make the transition a bit more complicated.

Kids craft activities begin at 7:00 p.m., followed by the movie at sunset.

Generously funded by Council Member Paul Vallone.
