The Hattie Carthan Community Farmers Market is opening for its ninth season of healthy food, activities, education and food justice programming. The Hattie Carthan Community Farmers Market has engaged hundreds of local youths, distributed over 10 tons of fresh food, recycled 24 tons of organic waste via its market compost dropoff operation, hosted 240 community market sessions, delivered 550 cooking demonstrations, 16 bread baking workshops and more in its eight seasons of operation.

Sunday market reopens for a fifth season July 30, 2017 on the farm, with a series of healing events which highlight the value of herbs and non-invasive healing modalities for humans. Join the Village Community Boathouse for Community Rowing in traditional Whitehall gigs, captained by experienced New York Harbor coxswains. The Village Community Boathouse offers free community rowing on Sundays at noon and on Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m., through November 12, 2017.

Community rowing is free and open to all; no experience or reservations necessary, and lifejackets will be provided. Children (under 18) must be accompanied by a parent. For every rower under 12 one parent or adult guardian must be present. All participants must sign a liability waiver.

Please note: You must arrive at noon, as the Village Community Boathouse pair their boats, coxswains, and rowers by 12:30. Boats leave right after for the afternoon. Please check the Villiage Community Boathouse's social media feeds on Facebook or Twitter for possible last-minute changes due to weather or other circumstances. Or, call (212) 229-2059.

About Free Community Rowing
The Community Rows are free sessions that include a basic introduction to rowing for first timers (safety orientation, rowing technique, and terminology) and of course plenty of actual rowing on the Hudson River. The rows take place in five-person wooden rowboats that Village Community Boathouse builds onsite. The rows last, depending on river conditions and rower level experience, between one and three hours. Most of these rows have mixed crews with those that have never been on the river before and some old hands. Visit the Village Community Boathouse's website for more information and photos!

About Village Community Boathouse
Village Community Boathouse is a 501(c)(3) non-profit run by volunteers, based on the south side of Pier 40 on the Hudson River. While our community rowing programs are free, our facilities, boats and equipment require regular upkeep and repair. Your donations make our program possible.

The Queens Historical Society is organizing a series of talks associated with the Immigrant Voices satellite exhibit. We are honoured to have the Executive Director of the Greater Flushing Chamber of Commerce, John Choe as a guest speaker on the 6th of August from 2:30pm - 4:30pm.

He works every day to expand opportunities and empower those who live and work in the most diverse community in the United States; he has launched a number of innovative programs during his tenure.

The Immigrant Voices satellite exhibit will showcase the many diverse immigrant groups through their words and distinct images. So far, the exhibit has been featured in Queens Public Libraries in Jackson Heights, Corona and Ridgewood, and remains to be placed in Astoria, Woodside and many other areas.

Namely, various ethnicities introduced their relationship with other immigrant groups in their immediate area. This project’s purpose is to also achieve positive awareness of the native born Queens residents towards their immigrant neighbors.

From the taverns of London to the palaces of Vienna, Shakespeare invites us into the personal trials and triumphs of the common people and their all-too-human leaders. Hip to Hip’s 11th season of “Free Shakespeare in the Parks” features madcap capers and epic battles, mistaken identity, and unexpected marriages, and a vibrant cast of unforgettable characters, including the iconic Falstaff.

Kids & the Classics is the companion piece to Hip to Hip’s program of “Free Shakespeare in the Parks.” This free interactive workshop is offered 30 minutes before every performance, and is designed for children ages 4 to 12. It gives children a chance to interact with the text by previewing the characters and situations, and creating links between the text and their own lives through theatre games and close reading of text.

Hudson Warehouse presents the Classics, on Thursdays through Sundays at 6:30 p.m.

Henry V
By Wm. Shakespeare
Directed by Nicholas Martin-Smith

The horrors of war throughout time have changed little and that is made even more apparent in this immediate and visceral production of
Henry V. Led by a war time correspondent, we follow King Henry as he politically positions himself and his subsequent military campaign across France in his quest to take what he believes is rightfully his.

For experienced* high school rowers, ages 14 to 18, this summer-long competitive camp meets five days a week, Mondays through Fridays, from 7:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m., on the historic Harlem River.

Athletes train with experienced coaches from a variety of competitive collegiate rowing programs. Rowing is a great way to distinguish your child’s college resume, and our seasoned coaches are always available as a resource to discuss rowing at a higher level. We work on enhancing rowing skills and technique in both sweep and sculling boats.

Along with rigorous training, participants compete in select regattas throughout the summer season. For those who are considering rowing at the collegiate level, this camp is the perfect addition to develop their talent.

*Previous rowing experience is defined as at least 10 months of previous rowing experience and/or race experience in at least four high school-level regattas. All participants are selected for this program at our coaches discretion.

Plant Patterns features the work of Adam Frezza & Terri Chiao, Adrienne Elise Tarver, Karin Haas, Liesl Pfeffer, and Nick Wildermuth. The artists use plants’ impressive natural characteristics as a means to explore various themes in their graphic works. Domestic and wild flora have provided artists with inspiration for centuries. The diversity and multitude of plant colors, shapes, and repetitive forms, which evolved to lure pollinators, caution predators, and promote regeneration, are naturally appealing to artists’ sensibilities.

Since 2004, Row New York has taught summer rowing camps to 6th through 12th graders, beginners and competitors. Camps run out of the beautiful Peter Jay Sharp Boathouse in Manhattan and our newest rowing location, the Paerdegat Basin Launch in Brooklyn.

Campers join for many reasons – fitness, discovery of a new sport, a competitive college application – but ultimately find one common result, a team to call their own.

During our novice Crew Camp, your child will have the totally unique experience of learning to row on the Harlem River in Manhattan. Our 3-week camp focuses on fun, fitness, and teamwork while prioritizing safety on the water. Campers are lead by experienced coaches while learning basic rowing techniques and boat moving skills, on and off the water. No experience is necessary to join!

Cinderella Samba is a contemporary twist on the classic “Cinderella” fairy tale. The CityParks PuppetMobile production sets the timeless tale in the lush landscape of Brazil, where, thanks to the help of her fairy godmother, Cinderella attends Rio de Janeiro’s biggest Carnival gala and dances the samba with Prince Paulo himself. After Cinderella is forced to flee the gala just before midnight, the prince sets out to find the mystery woman who stole his heart, in hopes of marrying her.

The lively production features an original commissioned musical soundtrack that brings samba center-stage; handcrafted Carnival festival floats on parade; and one-of-a-kind marionettes donning their most vibrant Carnival costumes, created by the expert puppeteers from the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theater in Central Park.

All That Jazz
“It’s showtime, folks!” Joe Gideon (Roy Scheider) is a workaholic Broadway director and choreographer. He is also a womanizer, a heavy drinker, a chain smoker and frequent pill popper. Bob Fosse directed this jazzy, thinly-veiled autobiographical film showcasing his very own personal demons. Not surprisingly, Gideon (like Fosse) eventually finds himself in a life-or-death struggle as he goes under the knife for open-heart surgery. Nominated for nine Oscars, All That Jazz won four (Score, Art Direction, Costumes, Editing). If you can survive it, there’s no business-like show business. (1979) 123 MIN. (R) (FOX)

“Climate change is the single greatest threat to a sustainable future but, at the same time, addressing the climate challenge presents a golden opportunity to promote prosperity, security and a brighter future for us all” – Ban Ki-Moon, Secretary General, United Nations. There isn’t a more significant place to watch Before the Flood than Film Works Alfresco open-air cinema surrounded by natural salt marsh in Inwood Hill Park.

Before the Flood, presented by National Geographic, features Leonardo DiCaprio on a journey as a United Nations Messenger of Peace, traveling to five continents and the Arctic to witness climate change firsthand. He goes on expeditions with scientists uncovering the reality of climate change and meets political leaders fighting against inaction. He also discovers a calculated disinformation campaign orchestrated by powerful special interests working to confuse the public about the urgency of the growing climate crisis. With unprecedented access to thought leaders around the world, DiCaprio searches for hope in a rising tide of catastrophic news.

The inaugural free outdoor summer cinema series continues Monday, August 7 with a free pre-show performance of Combo Nuvo’s One World Suite by local Inwood composer and musician Rich Shemaria preceding the screening at 7:00pm.

This curated film series focuses foremost on presenting independent and popular films with local relevance that culturally resonate with the Northern Manhattan community. In a neighborhood bereft of a movie theater, Film Works Alfresco presents twelve free screenings consecutively every Monday evening at dusk at Gaelic Field in Inwood Hill Park from June 5 through August 28, 2017. This English and Spanish language seasonal cinema series expands public access to professional filmmaking in Northern Manhattan, and presents as diverse an array of films as the community it serves. The Film Works Alfresco is produced by Inwood Art Works, Aaron Simms, Founding Executive Producer.
