Robin Nagle, Anthropologist-in-Residence with the NYC Department of Sanitation and New York University Professor will present "How Street Cleaners Saved the City".

Competent waste management is essential for any healthy metropolis. Before New York had effective street cleaning and garbage collection, living conditions in the city were appalling, and the most vulnerable populations paid the highest price. Robin Nagle reveals just how far we've come from the darkest days of the 19th century, makes clear what happens when garbage flows stop, and describes some of the perpetually changing dynamics of Sanitation's mission today.

Food and beverages will be served.

The Poe Park Visitor Center proudly presents Be: Women of Color Exhibition, for Women’s History Month!

Artist Walter Cruz's exhibition, Be: Women of Color, is a collection of acrylic works that depict women living their everyday lives. The simplified forms serve as a slightly blank slate for viewers to imagine themselves as the subjects. Complimentary colors have been chosen as the palettes to create a welcoming presence within each piece.

We are reflections of each other. Let's hold one another as such.

The tension between mankind and Mother Nature has long been a disturbing battleground. There is a tendency to level the ground and bulldoze over anything in our way—often realizing after the fact that we built too big, too bold, and too quickly.

In “Natural Impact,” the new exhibit on view at NYC Parks’ Arsenal Gallery in Central Park, visual artists highlight the ingenuity and absurdity of this cycle through their work. Artists look at how nature sneaks back into our precisely constructed world and either softens the edges, or abruptly overwhelms them.

Curated by D. Dominick Lombardi, “Natural Impact” features a variety of mediums including painting, screenprints, and sculpture, from artists Tim Daly, Lina Puerta, Brant Moorefield, Cecilia Whittaker Doe, Dominick Rapone, and Jodie Mim Goodnough.

“Icons in their Own Right”, an art installation by Makeba "KEEBS" Rainey, seeks to remedy historic erasure, champion cultural representation, and reinforce identity and pride.

Makeba’s artistry is heavily influenced by hip-hop culture and Black consciousness. She carefully chooses each photograph of her characters to reflect a demeanor of confidence and power. She then selects an African-themed design that best contextualizes each figure’s attitude, creating an a exchange of multiple layers and emotions. We hope visitors will be inspired, among others, by President Obama resting in his power, Grace Jones posing confidently, Solange’s exhibiting quiet strength, and Langston Hughes looking casually amused. These are meant to be faces of mastery, intrigue, and calm, culminating in a rainbow of Black excellence that resonates with every walk of life.

This exhibit will be on view at the Old Stone House at Washington Park on Fridays from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., or by appointment.

About the Artist
Makeba “KEEBS” Rainey is a Harlem native inspired by her community and fellow emerging visual and performance artists. She is the founder of Black Capital Coalition (BCC), which promotes both visual and performance artists through creative collaborations between artists, businesses, and cultural institutions.

Co- Curated by Monica O. Montgomery, Museum of Impact and Katherine Gressel, Old Stone House & Washington Park.

It is said that the Internet is making the world a smaller place, connecting people and places that were once hugely separated by many miles and mindsets. However, the world has been getting “smaller” for years — in large part due to immigration and the free flow of ideas that come with it.

Now on view at the Conference House Park visitor center and at the Biddle House in Conference House Park, this exhibit highlights narratives of important pioneers in the fields of maritime navigation and communication so people today can understand how our ancestors started making the world “smaller” slowly but surely over centuries by learning how to travel vast oceans. The exhibit also includes a selection of devices, navigational maps and prints from the Museum of Maritime Navigation and Communication (located in Rosebank, S.I.), devoted to preserving and displaying devices and equipment that were used over the years to navigate waters worldwide. This exhibit also includes a working model of a dry dock.

In this special walking tour, we’ll explore the world of Irish immigrants, who flooded into New York City in the 19th century to escape famine and hardship in Ireland; in 1855, approximately 24,000 Irish immigrants worked as servants for wealthy families like the Tredwells. We’ll explore the world of these immigrants and see sites associated with a servant’s life outside the walls of her employer’s home.

Tour is one hour and begins promptly at 12:30 p.m.
Promenaders will return to the Museum in time to take the 2 p.m. Guided Tour if they wish.
Next walking tours: April 8, May 13, June 10, July 8.

Starting off our 2018 lecture series, join us for a talk with Andy McCarthy on the restless, transformative, and violent first year in the administration of Governor John Alsop King, owner of King Manor from 1827-1867.

In 1857, the state Legislature expanded its powers in the local administration of New York City, taking control of the construction of Central Park, overseeing the maritime operations and traffic of the harbor, and alienating the clout, muscle, and influence of Tammany Hall. Riots erupted in Manhattan, where for some months there were two opposing police forces, and whose mayor evaded an arrest warrant on the eve of a nationwide financial panic. Tensions inflamed between municipal and state politicians, labor and capital, and rich and poor. New York City was run by the party of slavery while King was the first Republican to lead the Excelsior State. Before the War Between the States, this was a war within the state.

Andy McCarthy is a reference librarian at the local history and genealogy division at NYPL; a former news researcher at ABC News; and for 8 years worked as an NYC doubledecker bus tour guide.

In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City—a place where history is made, not merely recorded.

As a historic house museum run by NYC Parks, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together.

In celebration of our 75th Anniversary of Gracie being a mayoral residence, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled New York 1942. This is the second in a series of installations envisioning New York through the framework of Gracie Mansion as it has been inhabited over time. It includes artwork, documents and objects from the period that the La Guardias lived in Gracie, shown together to tell a more complete story of the overall historic context as perceived from diverse perspectives.
