Rolf Stang (as H.C. Andersen) will present The Ugly Duckling's Birthday Party and Laura Simms will share the H.C. Andersen story "The Ugly Duckling."

This weekly class will take place on Saturdays at 11:00 a.m. from June 3 to October 14 (except July 1 and September 2).

Meet at the flag pole between the monument and Visitor's Center. This yoga class will take place on the lawn in front of the Ft. Greene Park Visitor Center. In the 19th century, death was an integral and accepted part of life for families like the Tredwells, who held funerals for eight family members in their double parlor. When patriarch Seabury Tredwell died at home, in 1865, his wife, Eliza, and their children prepared and dressed the body for viewing and for burial, likely assisted by a “layer out of the dead” or an undertaker. With the rise of industrial society came the professional funeral director, who removed death care from the home.

In the Parlor: The Final Goodbye is both a critical look at America’s uncomfortable relationship with death and an inquiry into the growing revival of home death-care. The film takes viewers on an intimate journey into the lives of three families who have chosen to reclaim an active role in caring for their deceased as a more personal and fulfilling way to say goodbye. The film challenges us to reflect on how we view the experience of death, so often feared, denied, and left unspoken.

Heidi Boucher, filmmaker and home death care guide for over 30 years, wrote, directed, and produced In the Parlor: The Final Goodbye. A discussion will follow the screening (running time: 80 minutes).

The Hattie Carthan Community Farmers Market is opening for its ninth season of healthy food, activities, education and food justice programming. Sunday market reopens for a fifth season July 30, 2017 on the farm, with a series of healing events which highlight the value of herbs and non-invasive healing modalities for humans. An exhibition of site-specific artworks by Andrea Arroyo will be on view at Maggie’s Garden and Friendship Garden in Harlem, through October 31, 2017.

“Women with Wings” will feature a series of artworks inspired by the women of New York, including the historical and contemporary women who make Uptown Manhattan a diverse and vibrant community. Each piece, executed in mixed media and repurposed materials, is integrated within the natural environment of plants, grass and other elements of each garden. “Women with Wings” creates a multi-level conversation bridging local culture, nature and history that connects the past and the present.

Artworks include “Maggie’s Pearls of Wisdom”, a piece executed in acrylic, repurposed materials and beads, integrated with a Magnolia tree and inspired by the legacy of Maggie Burnett, beloved Harlem resident and founder of Maggie’s Garden, and “Women in Movement” a piece featuring multiple women silhouettes on multiple wheels hanging from light posts inside the garden.

This free event is a chance to explore normally closed areas of Freshkills Park and enjoy the unique landscape and spectacular views the landfill-to-park project has to offer! Over 700 acres and eight miles of trails will be open for a day of photography, bicycling, activities, and tours.

The event will include:

  • Guided tours
  • Bicycling on five miles of paved paths. Bring your own bike or rent one for free at the park!
  • Self-guided hiking and photography across eight miles of trails
  • Kite-flying and other family-friendly activities led by NYC Parks
  • Shuttles to and from the event area: one at the Staten Island Ferry Terminal, one at parking lots near 350 Wild Avenue, and another at one of the park’s scenic hills.

At 2,200 acres, Freshkills Park is almost three times the size of Central Park and the largest park to be developed in New York City in over 100 years. It also has a significant history as the site of the Fresh Kills Landfill, which was the largest landfill in the world before closing in 2001. Since then, the landfill has been covered with layers of soil and infrastructure, and the site has become a place for wildlife, recreation, science, education, and art. As the park is built in phases, free tours and events provide early access for learning and exploration opportunities.

Fort Tryon Park is transformed into a medieval market town decorated with bright banners and processional flags. Performers, guests, and festival goers dress in medieval costume. Visitors are greeted by authentic period music, dance, magic, and minstrels, as well as jugglers and jesters. The afternoon is concluded with a thrilling joust between four knights on horseback. Costumed vendors will be on hand to demonstrate and sell a wide variety of medieval crafts as well as food and drink. Experience the culture of a bygone era against the backdrop of the Cloisters museum and the Hudson River during autumn's peak. We invite all ages to join us for this unique experience.

The festival is held in the area surrounding the world famous Cloisters, a magnificent museum of medieval art located in northern Manhattan.

The event is free but Medieval crafts, clothing, etc., and food will be available for purchase.

Please note: There will be no ATM's on site at the festival.

Most areas are wheelchair accessible; however, persons with mobility issues may experience difficulty maneuvering on lawn areas.

This event is co-sponsored by Washington Heights and Inwood Development Corporation.

Start time: 11:30 am

End time: 6:00 pm

About Free Community Rowing
The Community Rows are free sessions that include a basic introduction to rowing for first timers (safety orientation, rowing technique, and terminology) and of course plenty of actual rowing on the Hudson River. The rows take place in five-person wooden rowboats that Village Community Boathouse builds onsite. The rows last, depending on river conditions and rower level experience, between one and three hours. Most of these rows have mixed crews with those that have never been on the river before and some old hands. Visit the Village Community Boathouse's website for more information and photos!

About Village Community Boathouse
Village Community Boathouse is a 501(c)(3) non-profit run by volunteers, based on the south side of Pier 40 on the Hudson River. While our community rowing programs are free, our facilities, boats and equipment require regular upkeep and repair. Your donations make our program possible.

Meet, greet, and potluck picnic on September 30 with Riverside Park South artist Samantha Holmes to learn about our newest sculpture on display. Attendees are welcome to bring a snack and a soft drink that they would like to enjoy and share. You are welome to bring a blanket to sit on as well as we will gather under the sculpture.

Hell Gate Cairns, a series of stacked stone pillars, or cairns that stand watch over the western coastline of Riverside Park. By focusing on the forms of natural stone, the piece draws attention to the boulders that line the waterfront, remnants of the great earthmoving projects of the 20th century that cleared the city’s waterways, including the perilous “Hell Gate”. The monument’s placement at the water’s edge recalls these feats of human engineering, while further calling upon the cairns’ symbolism as an ancient sign of treacherous waters. Their verticality as a reflection of the nearby skyline, the Hell Gate Cairns aim to embody the human impulse to imaginative construction – stacking stones first in play, then as architecture.

Ray Felix presents a dark, yet whimsical tale based on the life of Edgar Allen Poe while residing in the Bronx. Based on both fact and fiction, "Poe is the Raven" gives new light and insight on the secret life of Edgar Allan Poe.

Inspired by his visits to Poe Cottage, Ray Felix became intrigued by spiritual ether surrounding the Poe property and the stories told by the long time
tour guide of the Poe cottage. Felix's imprint "Bronx Heroes," takes stories from American History and transforms them into super heroes. Felix believes this allows Bronxites to appreciate everyday heroes from Bronx history and gain a greater understanding of their borough’s historically rich past.

In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City—a place where history is made, not merely recorded.

As a historic house museum run by NYC Parks, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together.

In celebration of our 75th Anniversary of Gracie being a mayoral residence, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled New York 1942. This is the second in a series of installations envisioning New York through the framework of Gracie Mansion as it has been inhabited over time. It includes artwork, documents and objects from the period that the La Guardias lived in Gracie, shown together to tell a more complete story of the overall historic context as perceived from diverse perspectives.
