Sit with your wee ones and listen to stories of the “people of the mounds,” the fairies and elves found in Celtic mythology, as told by guest storyteller Marianne McShane and her blue harp. Then travel into Wave Hill’s woodland, and, using only natural materials and a bit of jute twine, create your own tiny, fairy-sized dwelling using found sticks, leaves, moss and bark, or string together a series of autumn leaves to form a fall wand or crown—and behold the magic!

At 11:00 a.m. and at noon, guest musicians Terry McCann, a guitarist and singer, and Stephen Gara on the uilleann pipes (a delicate version of the standard bagpipe), the flute and the tin whistle, offer a short concert of Irish jigs, reels and songs. The pair will also visit Wave Hill’s woodland with their instruments, to serenade the aos sí and lead a short autumn fairy parade.

Free, and admission to the grounds is free until noon.

An exhibition of site-specific artworks by Andrea Arroyo will be on view at Maggie’s Garden and Friendship Garden in Harlem, through October 31, 2017.

“Women with Wings” will feature a series of artworks inspired by the women of New York, including the historical and contemporary women who make Uptown Manhattan a diverse and vibrant community. Each piece, executed in mixed media and repurposed materials, is integrated within the natural environment of plants, grass and other elements of each garden. “Women with Wings” creates a multi-level conversation bridging local culture, nature and history that connects the past and the present.

Artworks include “Maggie’s Pearls of Wisdom”, a piece executed in acrylic, repurposed materials and beads, integrated with a Magnolia tree and inspired by the legacy of Maggie Burnett, beloved Harlem resident and founder of Maggie’s Garden, and “Women in Movement” a piece featuring multiple women silhouettes on multiple wheels hanging from light posts inside the garden.

Exhibition Hours

This exhibit is on view at Maggie's Garden (564 West 149th Stree, Manhattant) on Mondays from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.; Wednesdays from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and from 6:00 p.m. to sundown; Thursdays from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.; Fridays at 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.; and Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Today, the name of Frederick Law Olmsted is closely associated with Central Park. As a designer, he helped create the layout and look of the park.

Frederick Law Olmsted (1822-1903), the father of American landscape architecture, may have more to do with the way America looks than anyone else. Beginning in 1857 with the design of Central Park in New York City, he created designs for thousands of landscapes, including many of the world's most important parks.

Join the Ranger's for a stroll through Central Park and discover the vision Frederick Olmsted had for the design of the park.

As NYC Parks’ public art program took shape in the 1960s, artistic events called “happenings” popped up in parks across the city. Blurring the line between art and everyday life, these fleeting performances combined sculpture, music, theater, dance, and poetry. They varied in size and sophistication, but always relied on audience participation.

NYC Parks’ 50th anniversary celebration "It’s Happening!" captures the same creative spirit with dynamic public artworks, hands-on workshops, and performances.

Poignant scenes of death and grief recreated in the house will explore mid-19th century mourning customs. Pay your last respects at his deathbed upstairs, or join the mourning in the double parlor, hung with black crepe and set for a mid-19th century funeral. And stage your own “postmortem” photograph in our 19th century coffin. Then share with your friends on Instagram and Twitter. #mhmcoffin2017

Did you know that the north end of Central Park has a rich history that includes the British having been stationed here during the American Revolution, and American troops stationed there during the War of 1812? Recent archaeological and historical investigations in the area have revealed even more information about how the "Fort Landscape" was used in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, before this area was part of Central Park. This season, join our guides and learn the history of this part of the park, get insight into the studies in the area, and appreciate the recent restorations undertaken by the Conservancy.

Highlights of this tour include McGowan's Pass, Fort Clinton, Nutter's Battery, and the Harlem Meer.

The tour route involves many hills and stairs, and some uneven terrain. The tour starts at Charles A. Dana Discovery Center (inside the park at 110th Street between Fifth and Lenox Avenues), and ends near the park perimeter at 106th Street and Fifth Avenue.

Sunday market reopens for a fifth season July 30, 2017 on the farm, with a series of healing events which highlight the value of herbs and non-invasive healing modalities for humans.

At 11AM and at noon, guest musicians Terry McCann, a guitarist and singer, and Stephen Gara on the uilleann pipes (a delicate version of the standard bagpipe), the flute and the tin whistle, offer a short concert of Irish jigs, reels and songs. The pair will also visit Wave Hill’s woodland with their instruments, to serenade the aos sí and lead a short autumn fairy parade.

Free with admission to the grounds.

Urban Park Rangers specialize in the interpretation of historic turning points, both natural and man-made, in our city’s long history. Historic New York programs highlight the history and architecture of selected neighborhoods or parks.

Water is life! During New York's early years, clean water was paramount to the success of our great metropolis. The Croton Aqueduct brought the water we needed to combat disease and fire. Hike across the High Bridge with the Urban Park Rangers and learn how New York City's oldest standing bridge actually brought water from the Bronx to Manhattan and allowed our city to grow into the 20th century.
