About the New York Junior League Playground Improvement Project
For more than 25 years, the Playground Improvement Project (PIP) has been a New York Junior League signature community project. Our volunteers create safe, beautiful, well-organized, and educational play spaces for children and other members of the New York City community. PIP focuses on sites and parks that need major renovation and have the greatest impact on the surrounding community. Weekend cleanup days include landscaping and repairing the parks. We work with over 700 volunteers each season to help improve the park and make a positive impact on the community. Please reach out to playground@nyjl.org with any questions or if you are interested in making a donation to this cause.

Community rowing is free and open to all; no experience or reservations necessary.

Please note: It is very important that you arrive between noon and 12:30 p.m., as the Village Community Boathouse pair their boats, coxswains, and rowers by 12:30. Boats leave right after for the afternoon. In some cases, the Villiage Community Boathouse will have additional boats leaving at a later time but the chances to get out on a boat then are much slimmer. Please check the Villiage Community Boathouse's social media feeds on Facebook or Twitter for possible last-minute changes due to weather or other circumstances. Or, call (212) 229-2059.

About Free Community Rowing
The Community Rows are free sessions that include a basic introduction to rowing for first timers (safety orientation, rowing technique, and terminology) and of course plenty of actual rowing on the Hudson River. The rows take place in five-person wooden rowboats that Village Community Boathouse builds onsite. The rows last, depending on river conditions and rower level experience, between one and three hours. Most of these rows have mixed crews with those that have never been on the river before and some old hands. Visit the Village Community Boathouse's website for more information and photos!

Guest co-curators and art historians Deborah Frizzell and Harry J. Weil lead a conversationwith artists Samira Abbassy, Scherezade Garcia, and Fay Ku who are exhibiting as part of Outcasts: Women in the Wilderness. The artists speak about how they use ancient and modern mythologies as a source to create artwork that explores hybrid alternatives to the social and cultural order.

Samira Abbassy’s self-portraiture and mixed-media sculptures explore cultural identity, knitting together disparate visual languages, conventions and myths drawn from Arab-Iranian, Persian, Muslim, Christian, Hindu, Jewish, and Buddhist traditions.

Interdisciplinary visual artist Scherezade Garcia addresses contemporary allegories of history and the processes of colonization and migration, which frequently evoke memories of faraway home and the hopes that accompany relocating in a new land.

Fay Ku layers her drawings with hybrid animal, human and vegetal forms, her archetypes comment on cultural identity and tradition through a delicate sense of line and a sensitivity to surface.

As part of Outcasts: Women in the Wilderness, the spring show in Wave Hill's Glyndor Gallery, spoken-word artists and poets perform on the grounds, bringing their voices into the open air. Their work aims to heal and empower by way of inclusiveness, resistance, and recovery from loss and trauma.

Artists Mahogany L. Browne, Natalie N. Caro, Caridad De La Luz, and Jess X will offer their own works, share works by kindred spirit poets and writers, or perform new works that respond to the artwork on view in the gallery. The artists were selected for their unique voices that draw on personal experience and cultural context, with a drive to communicate.

Bronx-based artist and curator Jane Gabriels serves as host for the program. As a champion of cultural production in the Bronx, Gabriels puts the works in context, providing a reference point for these powerful messages. With its strong Bronx focus the program showcases the creativity of our borough and beyond and introduces these visionary artists.

Curated by Audra Lambert (Antecedent Projects), Other Homes is a group exhibition that considers the role of organic materials in contemporary art, specifically art that utilizes found objects and assemblage. Marina Andrij?i?-Ojeda, Jon Bunge, Katya Grokhovsky, Rachel Hornaday and Nyugen Smith each consider the effects of natural environments on contemporary art. Their works consider our intimacy with the natural environment while examining the tension created by transforming organic matter into assembled and found artworks.

For the first time, Poe Park Visitor Center is highlighting artwork created by NYC Parks youth through an art festival. This three-week art festival will include a variety of artwork created, from September of 2016 through April of 2017, by children who attend NYC Parks youth programming at recreation centers throughout the five boroughs.

Artist and Recreation Specialist Laura Alvarez created monthly curriculums, which were implemented by the recreation team throughout the year. Each lesson plan was based on a famous artist’s work, allowing for cohesion in the exhibit, while also allowing the children to use various styles of art in their own work.

In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City—a place where history is made, not merely recorded.

As a historic house museum run by NYC Parks, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together.

In celebration of our 75th Anniversary of Gracie being a mayoral residence, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled New York 1942. This is the second in a series of installations envisioning New York through the framework of Gracie Mansion as it has been inhabited over time. It includes artwork, documents and objects from the period that the La Guardias lived in Gracie, shown together to tell a more complete story of the overall historic context as perceived from diverse perspectives.

Currently, Gracie Mansion is not offering group tours. If you are part of a private organization that would like to tour the house, please email your request, including the size of group, your name and the purpose of a tour, to gracieinfo@cityhall.nyc.gov and we will work to add you to one of the currently scheduled tours.

Join the Stewardship Team for an evening of horseshoe crab monitoring! Since 2013, NYC Parks has been monitoring horseshoe crab spawning activity along the restored sandy beach at Coney Island Creek. We'll be walking the beach to count the number of crabs present and tagging them to keep track of how many we've already seen as part of NYC Parks' ongoing effort to monitor their activity. This exciting work contributes to a long-term research study that is helping us to better understand and protect the horseshoe crabs that live in our urban waters. Come and take a closer look at our city’s valuable natural resources! Please come dressed in layers, clothes that can get dirty, and waterproof boots or sneakers, and bring your own water bottle. All volunteers under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

About Poe Park Visitor Center
The Poe Park Visitor Center, a gallery space in the Bronx, offers free dynamic arts and cultural programming from theatrical performances and
concerts to fitness classes and recreational activities. The center hosts rotating art exhibitions, and welcomes visual, literary, and performance
artists from around the city to present workshops to the public.
