Join us for the second in a series of rare off-hours tours of the Merchant’s House.

We’ll gather in the 1850s kitchen for coffee and a focused overview of the landmark Merchant’s House and its intact collection of more than 3,000 objects owned by the Tredwell family. We’ll then tour the house, including the rarely seen bedrooms on the 3rd floor (now staff offices), even peek up into the attic and open locked doors … and more. From late Federal to Greek Revival; Duncan Phyfe to Rococo Revival; whale oil to gas to kerosene, you’ll gain new insight and perspectives on these unique insider’s tours, learning about changing period styles and technologies and how they reflect the attitudes and values of the merchant class in mid-19th century New York City.

100 Years of Domestic Lighting
We’ll examine the evolution of 19th century domestic lighting and the story of technological advances and changing lifestyles it tells using examples throughout the Museum, including many not normally on exhibition.

It is said that the Internet is making the world a smaller place, connecting people and places that were once hugely separated by many miles and mindsets. However, the world has been getting “smaller” for years — in large part due to immigration and the free flow of ideas that come with it.

Now on view at the Conference House Park visitor center and at the Biddle House in Conference House Park, this exhibit highlights narratives of important pioneers in the fields of maritime navigation and communication so people today can understand how our ancestors started making the world “smaller” slowly but surely over centuries by learning how to travel vast oceans. The exhibit also includes a selection of devices, navigational maps and prints from the Museum of Maritime Navigation and Communication (located in Rosebank, S.I.), devoted to preserving and displaying devices and equipment that were used over the years to navigate waters worldwide. This exhibit also includes a working model of a dry dock.

Bring clean, reusable, portable items such as clothing, housewares, games, books, & toys that you no longer need, and take home something new-to-you, free! You don’t have to bring something to take something.

Volunteer Information

Help GrowNYC create an event where people find things they need and reduce waste! At Stop ‘N’ Swaps New Yorkers bring items they no longer need and find things that are new to them. The public is invited to bring and take gently-used items, like books, clothes, household goods, and toys. You don't need to bring something to take something. The only things we don’t take are large items/furniture.

As a volunteer you will help receive, sort, and display the gently used items that people bring. You might also help keep areas neat, take pictures, or help promote some of the other great work GrowNYC's Zero Waste Program does!

Stop 'N' Swaps encourage reuse, build community, and reduce the waste NYC sends to landfills. By volunteering you will create an opportunity for people to bring things they no longer need instead of throwing them away, and find things they do want without manufacturing, packaging, or transportation.

Native Soil: Incidence and Homescapes is a large-scale retrospective of paintings by Sarah Yuster, spanning her thirty-year career. Yuster’s work is subtle and intimate, sparking sentiments from viewers that explain her propensity to invoke a sense of “home.” Yuster has had notable success as a portraitist, with works in two Smithsonian Museums and top university collections. This exhibit is on display from March 24, 2018 - September 23, 2018.

The opening reception is free; however, on all other days, general admission to the Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art (Buildings C & G) is $5 ($4 students/seniors). Spring to autumn hours are Thursdays through Fridays from noon to 7:00 p.m. and Saturdays through Sunundays from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The following local businesses have provided generous support to Native Soil: Blue, Bayou and Beso Restaurants, Empire Outlets, Door to Door Realty, Snappy Solutions, Connie Lane Real Estate, and Victory State Bank.

Native Soil is made possible in part by a DCA Art Fund Grant from Staten Island Arts with public funding from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.

The tension between mankind and Mother Nature has long been a disturbing battleground. There is a tendency to level the ground and bulldoze over anything in our way—often realizing after the fact that we built too big, too bold, and too quickly.

In “Natural Impact,” the new exhibit on view at NYC Parks’ Arsenal Gallery in Central Park, visual artists highlight the ingenuity and absurdity of this cycle through their work. Artists look at how nature sneaks back into our precisely constructed world and either softens the edges, or abruptly overwhelms them.

Curated by D. Dominick Lombardi, “Natural Impact” features a variety of mediums including painting, screenprints, and sculpture, from artists Tim Daly, Lina Puerta, Brant Moorefield, Cecilia Whittaker Doe, Dominick Rapone, and Jodie Mim Goodnough.

In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City—a place where history is made, not merely recorded.

As a historic house museum run by NYC Parks, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together.

In celebration of our 75th Anniversary of Gracie being a mayoral residence, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled New York 1942. This is the second in a series of installations envisioning New York through the framework of Gracie Mansion as it has been inhabited over time. It includes artwork, documents and objects from the period that the La Guardias lived in Gracie, shown together to tell a more complete story of the overall historic context as perceived from diverse perspectives.

The Poe Park Visitor Center proudly presents Be: Women of Color Exhibition, for Women’s History Month!

Artist Walter Cruz's exhibition, Be: Women of Color, is a collection of acrylic works that depict women living their everyday lives. The simplified forms serve as a slightly blank slate for viewers to imagine themselves as the subjects. Complimentary colors have been chosen as the palettes to create a welcoming presence within each piece.

We are reflections of each other. Let's hold one another as such.

This exhibition is FREE and open to the public. For more information, please call (212) 360-8163.

This exhibition is FREE and open to the public. For more information, please call (212) 360-8163.
