Socrates Sculpture Park and Film Forum, in collaboration with Rooftop Films, present this annual international film festival, which features a different country or culture each Wednesday evening between July 6 and August 24. This year’s series examines the theme of The River, either literally or metaphorically, as we celebrate our 30th anniversary and the Landmark exhibition.

Each week throughout the summer series, the film is paired with live international music and local food vendors representing each week’s featured country of origin, making for a diverse array of films, food, and music. This program invites visitors to picnic on the grass, see musical and dance performances, enjoy the cool waterfront breeze as the sun sets over the Manhattan skyline, and watch exceptional international films on an outdoor screen.

About L'Atalante
River barge captain Jean Dasté marries country girl Dita Parlo and the two board Jean’s cat-populated boat, L’Atalante, along with first mate Michel Simon, to embark on a life of marital bliss, but surprises await the unsuspecting couple when they reach Paris. A clear-eyed meditation on love and a simple story – couple weds, couple has problems, couple reunites – is transformed by the director’s poetic touch into a work of art. Directed by Jean Vigo; 1934, 89 mins.

Each Sunset Wednesday, enjoy outdoor concerts by vibrant New York City musicians who will bring a pop sensibility to their performance on Wave Hill’s Great Lawn.

A clarinet, an accordion, a guitar and a trombone walk into a bar…what came out was The Four Bags, a Brooklyn super-group that’s difficult to define but easy to enjoy. The Four Bags play chamber music described by The New Republic as “exuberant, virtuosic and light-spirited…smart music with a joyful intensity.”

Its members are Brian Drye (trombone), Jacob Garchik (accordion), Sean Moran (guitar), and Mike McGinnis(woodwinds). Pop selections include tunes originated by Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys.

Visitors may bring a lawn chair and picnic during the performance.

He sneaks into the game with a simple plan—win a medal—but soon wrecks everything, and accidentally unleashes a deadly enemy that threatens every game in the arcade. Ralph's only hope? Vanellope von Schweetz, a young troublemaking "glitch" from a candy-coated cart racing game who might just be the one to teach Ralph what it means to be a Good Guy.

This photo exhibit is the result of a "people to people" cultural exchange in which the artist participated last October. The artist and group visited Havana, Cienfuegos, and Trinidad. Music and art were everywhere and the crumbling Spanish architecture made for some interesting images. The various images convey his impressions of Cuba and the Cuban people in an apolitical manner. The recent presidential visit and talk of lifting the embargo lend context to the images.

The Lenape Gallery at the Conference House Park Visitor Center will open a unique exhibition, featuring artist Randi Ehrhart.

Regeneration is a three-dimensional installation featuring hundreds of entomology-based miniature sculpted works constructed from dead branches, dried leaves, and other barren, hollow, empty, and vacant organic material found primarily in the Northeast United States.

Born in New York City, Ehrhart studied art at Queens College in Flushing, New York, and worked as a professional bench jeweler in the Bowery. A widow, mother of three grown sons and a recent grandmother, Ehrhart has dedicated her life and work by establishing herself as a conduit connecting nature and art in a fresh new light.

The Lenape Gallery is pleased to launch Regeneration, the first solo exhibit by Randi Ehrhart. This exhibition beautifully combines her innovative work with fascinating aspects of her life and process. The exhibit will be extended through 9-4-16.

Marking Socrates Sculpture Park’s 30th anniversary this year, the institution presents Landmark, a series of artist commissions and projects that transforms the land both physically and symbolically. Once an industrial landfill and illegal dumping ground, Socrates has transformed itself into New York City’s preeminent sculpture park and social space for public art, community engagement and urban discovery. Landmark directly addresses the idea of place as intimately tied to social and ecological structures, to maintenance and stewardship, and to evolution over time.

Landmark features eight different artist projects including a newly commissioned major earthwork by Meg Webster. Additional artists in the exhibition include Abigail DeVille, Brendan Fernandes, Cary Leibowitz, Jessica Segall, Casey Tang, the curatorial collective ARTPORT_making waves, and a Broadway Billboard by Hank Willis Thomas. Since its inception in 1986, Socrates and the surrounding area of Queens, New York has rapidly changed. Whether by engaging directly with the land or commenting on the neighborhood’s cultural and economic shifts, each artwork in Landmark reflects historic transformations in the making.

Kick off your shoes and dance on the lush, green Van Cortlandt House Museum Lawn. Free dance instruction and live music will be provided by the Greek American Folklore Society.

The Greek-American Folklore Society is dedicated to the study, preservation, and instruction of the history and traditions of Hellenic folk culture. They share their work with the public through stage re-enactments of traditional Greek customs, songs and dances, as well as through lectures, exhibits and workshops. The Greek American Folklore Society offers instruction in folk dancing for dancers of all ages, abilities, and levels, including special classes for children. During the classes the dances are put in their proper perspective through consideration of the historical background of each region, cultural influences, and the significance of each dance in the village, especially in relation to religious or social celebrations and events, such as the Easter ceremonies or weddings. They play a huge part in our understanding of Hellenistic culture!

The Girls in the Band tells the poignant, untold stories of female jazz and big band instrumentalists and their fascinating, groundbreaking journeys from the late 30s to the present day.

These incredibly talented women endured diminished opportunities for decades, yet continued to persevere, inspire and elevate their talents in a field that seldom welcomed them. Today, there is a new breed of gifted young women taking their rightful place in the world of jazz, which can no longer deny their talents.

As a child, "Baby Jane" Hudson was the toast of vaudeville. As an adult, however, Baby Jane was overshadowed by her more talented sister, Blanche, who became a top movie star. Then, one night in the early '30s, came the accident, which crippled Blanche for life and which was blamed on a drunken, jealous Jane. Flash-forward to 1962: Jane (Bette Davis), decked out in garish chalk-white makeup, still lives with the invalid Blanche (Joan Crawford) in their decaying L.A. mansion. When Jane isn't tormenting the helpless Blanche by serving her dead rats for breakfast, she is plotting and planning her showbiz comeback. Convinced that her days are numbered if she remains in the house with her addlepated sister, Blanche desperately tries to get away, but all avenues of escape are cut off by the deranged Jane.

Hitch has made a career out of coordinating a man's first three dates so that they'll show him to his best advantage (for a price, of course) and more than a few have taken women to the altar they first started courting with Hitch's help. But Hitch discovers his own romantic limitations when he falls for Sara (Eva Mendes), a journalist who has her own ideas about romance. Rated PG-13

Jim Henson's Muppets find themselves in Manhattan yearning to get a musical on Broadway in this charming film that also chides show business and its foibles. Kermit the Frog has just put together a successful variety show at Danhurst college (probably somewhere between Amherst and Dartmouth), and although he would like to mount it on Broadway so he would have a hit and be able to marry Miss Piggy, he cannot find backers. The Muppets are then forced to take jobs to support themselves, and it is while working as a waiter that Kermit meets the friendly Jennie (Juliana Donald). Jennie is the daughter of the owner of the restaurant and a source of great jealousy for Miss Piggy, who does not like competition.

City Parks Foundation offers a traveling puppet show, CityParks PuppetMobile, the oldest continually operating company of its kind in the country, which presents free performances and puppet-making workshops in neighborhood parks, recreation centers and schools throughout New York City.

The CityParks PuppetMobile presents the classic Puss in Boots tale, with a twist. Once upon a time there lived a young man named Ferguson Mundingle. Fergus has just the bare essentials in life – a roof over his head, the clothes on his back, and his ever faithful pet cat. One day when lamenting his poor lifestyle, Fergus is astounded when his cat stands up, begins talking and introduces himself as Puss. Puss reveals to Fergus that he is very intelligent and well traveled, and even has an idea to help Fergus improve his situation. With that in mind, Puss dons a snazzy pair of boots and sets off on an exciting magical journey. Despite his reputation as a sly trickster, Puss soon proves himself a caring friend to all, willing to help at any cost!
