Marking Socrates Sculpture Park’s 30th anniversary this year, the institution presents Landmark, a series of artist commissions and projects that transforms the land both physically and symbolically. Once an industrial landfill and illegal dumping ground, Socrates has transformed itself into New York City’s preeminent sculpture park and social space for public art, community engagement and urban discovery. Landmark directly addresses the idea of place as intimately tied to social and ecological structures, to maintenance and stewardship, and to evolution over time.

Landmark features eight different artist projects including a newly commissioned major earthwork by Meg Webster. Additional artists in the exhibition include Abigail DeVille, Brendan Fernandes, Cary Leibowitz, Jessica Segall, Casey Tang, the curatorial collective ARTPORT_making waves, and a Broadway Billboard by Hank Willis Thomas. Since its inception in 1986, Socrates and the surrounding area of Queens, New York has rapidly changed. Whether by engaging directly with the land or commenting on the neighborhood’s cultural and economic shifts, each artwork in Landmark reflects historic transformations in the making.

The salt marshes of Alley Creek in northeast Queens have experienced many changes since Jane Jacob’s time, and one section is even the former site of an amusement park! We’re working to restore these vital areas which are important habitats for migratory shorebirds, horseshoe crabs, and many more native animals and plants. Join the Natural Areas Conservancy as we tour the landscape and discuss our plans for restoration.

The Queens County Bird Club will also provide an introduction to the diverse birds that use the marsh.

The tour will begin at the Alley Pond Environmental Center (APEC). We will walk north of Northern Boulevard to visit future restoration sites along the outer shore of Alley Creek. Join us on the marsh to learn about our plans to preserve the critical habitat and other ecological benefits that Alley Creek provides!

This event is free and open to the public. Please be prepared with comfortable shoes that can get wet and dirty, appropriate outdoor attire, and water if needed. A portion of this walk will involve uneven terrain; this walk may not be suitable for people with mobility-impairments.

SculptureCenter is pleased to present Meridian (Gold), a temporary public art project by Mika Tajima. The installation will be located in Hunter’s Point South Park in Long Island City and will be on view from June 9 through September 25.

The public is invited to celebrate the project at a Community Day, featuring family activities, refreshments, and remarks by the artist and local elected officials, on Saturday, June 11, from 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Meridian (Gold) is an illuminated plume of water vapor whose color shifts between magenta and pale cyan. The color of the vapor corresponds in real-time to the global sentiment for gold, reflected in the price fluctuation of the commodity. Gold is a peculiar material that derives its value from the social perception of its qualities and collective “moods” toward geopolitical and economic events. The framing structure for Meridian (Gold) is a seating zone that references communal rejuvenation spas and here becomes a site to reflect on the fleeting materiality of contemporary life. The project was selected by participants in Public Process, SculptureCenter’s intensive program for high school students that uses New York City’s rich public art landscape to explore the history and impact of public art and its community influence.

This opening is free and open to the public.

Now, visitors can use the rustic trail to view native plantings that attract birds and other wildlife. Join our guides for this exclusive tour of the Hallett Nature Sanctuary, open to visitors only on Central Park Conservancy guided tours and during limited open hours.

Join Wave Hill’s Curatorial Fellow for a tour of current exhibitions. In the main gallery, (Not So) Still Life presents novel ways that contemporary artists are transforming the still-life genre to engage with current culture. As a subject, the still life has remained popular since the early Renaissance, featuring compositions of natural and inanimate objects often presented with allegorical connotations. Today, artists are creating new variations by working in photography and sculpture to conflate interior space with landscape, or by using video and animation to convey still life in motion. Artists include Adam Brent, Elizabeth Bryant, Nicole Cohen, Ori Gersht, Jessica Jackson Hutchins, Sue Johnson, Laura Letinsky, Beth Lipman, Erin O’Keefe,Donna Sharrett, Nicolas Touron, Michael Vahrenwald, Rodrigo Valenzuela, and Alex Verhaest. In the Sunroom Project Space, art collective Dark Matters (Aimée Burg, Frank De León-Jones, and Anna Ritsch) create an interactive site for contemplating the invisible energy that fills the universe.

Visitors may concoct their own wishes using materials available at stations throughout the space.

This event is free with admission to the grounds.

Join NYC Parks for a special concert featuring Taikoza. Taikoza has created a new sound using the thunderous rhythms of the ancestral Taiko drums and the magical sounds of the bamboo flutes. Roughly translated, Taiko means big drums, and that’s exactly what Taikoza brings—big drums, powerful rhythms, and electrifying, room-thumping energy. This exciting group draws from Japan’s rich tradition of music and performance to create a highly visual performance.

About Taikoza
Taikoza was formed in New York City by members of Ondekoza (the group that started the renaissance of Taiko in Japan in the 60s and introduced Taiko to the world). The members of Taikoza have performed on stages and parks around the world.

One day when lamenting his poor lifestyle, Fergus is astounded when his cat stands up, begins talking and introduces himself as Puss. Puss reveals to Fergus that he is very intelligent and well traveled, and even has an idea to help Fergus improve his situation. With that in mind, Puss dons a snazzy pair of boots and sets off on an exciting magical journey. Despite his reputation as a sly trickster, Puss soon proves himself a caring friend to all, willing to help at any cost!

The Poetry Society of New York is pleased to announce the launch of the interactive public arts initiative, The Typewriter Project: The Subconscious of the City with an opening picnic. Food and refreshments will be provided, but attendees are welcome to bring their own.

The event includes readings from previous installations of The Typewriter Project. The Haiku Guys & Gals will also be in attendance, providing custom poetic gifts to all attendees. The opening and piece itself are completely free and open to the public.

The Typewriter Project is a series of site-specific literary installations which invite passersby to join in a citywide linguistic exchange that exists in both the analog and digital realms. These typewriter booths are each outfitted with a vintage typewriter, 100-foot long paper scroll, and a custom-built USB Typewriter™ kit, which allows every keystroke to be collected, stored, and posted online for users to read, share, and comment upon. The Typewriter Project’s mission is to investigate, document, and preserve the poetic subconscious of the city while providing a fun and interactive means for the public to engage with the written word.

The project will open on June 11 at 4:00 p.m. and remain open to the public through July 19 at 8:00 p.m. The project’s hours of operation will be Mondays through Fridays from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday and Sundays from noon to 8:00 p.m.

See star-crossed lovers, cross-dressing, betrayal, intrigue, clowns, and a real dog! . . . Comedy with a pastiche of romance, melancholy, and a startling conclusion.

Directed by Ted Minos. Technical director/Costumes, Catherine Bruce. Music, Luke St. Francis. Fight choreography, Ray A. Rodriguez. Assistant director, Maya Kates. Graphic art, Lee Kaplan. Produced by Ted Minos for Moose Hall Theatre Company.

Emotions run wild in the mind of a little girl who is uprooted from her peaceful life in the Midwest and forced to move to San Francisco in this Pixar adventure from director Pete Docter (Up, Monsters Inc.). Young Riley was perfectly content with her life when her father landed a new job in San Francisco, and the family moved across the country. Now, as Riley prepares to navigate a new city and attend a new school, her emotional headquarters becomes a hot bed of activity. As Joy (voice of Amy Poehler) attempts to keep Riley feeling happy and positive about the move, other emotions like Fear (voice of Bill Hader), Anger (voice of Lewis Black), Disgust (voice of Mindy Kaling) and Sadness (Phyllis Smith) make the transition a bit more complicated.
