Films on the Green 2016 presents Boyfriends and Girlfriends, the sixth of French director Eric Rohmer's "Comedies et Proverbes" cycle, in Tompkins Square Park on July 29, 2016.

L'Ami de Mon Amie, directed by Eric Rohmer, 1987, PG, 1h42
with Emmanuelle Chaulet, Sophie Renoir, Eric Viellard

Blanche has recently moved to Cergy-Pontoise, a “new” prefabricated city in Paris suburb, to work at city hall. During a lunch break she meets the vivacious and immediately likable Léa. Although she is not fond of sports, Léa agrees to go swimming with Blanche at the local pool. There they meet Alexandre, one of Léa's friends, along with Adrienne, his current girlfriend. Blanche finds herself under the spell of the young engineer. Then Léa leaves for the holidays while Blanche stays in Cergy. By chance, Blanche bumps into Alexandre in the street. She clumsily tries to make a pass at him but soon she’s also bumping into Fabien, Léa’s boyfriend.

A successful retired jock and his geeky younger brother play out their sibling rivalry by coaching rival little league football teams in this family comedy. Ed O'Neill plays the older brother, Kevin O'Shea, a former Heisman Trophy winner whose gridiron exploits have made him a local hero in his small Illinois hometown. Kevin is the almost unanimous choice to head up the town's Pop Warner football team, and he happily builds an imposing team from the best local players. One of the few objectors is Kevin's young brother Danny (Rick Moranis), an awkward, bespectacled gas station owner who empathizes with the kids rejected from the team, including his own athletic daughter Becky (Shawna Waldron). As revenge, Danny starts his own competing team of misfits, taking on the coaching duties himself. Naturally, despite the total ineptitude of Danny and his players, they eventually find themselves major underdogs in a climactic battle against Kevin's well-trained juggernaut. Director Duwayne Dunham and a team of four screenwriters hit all the expected sports film conventions, throwing in a few innocent romantic subplots and cameos by real football players for good measure.

In the 23rd century, Cmdr. J.J. Adams (Leslie Nielsen) guides United Planets cruiser C-57-D on a rescue mission to faraway planet Altair-4. Twenty years earlier, Earth ship Bellerophon disappeared while en route to Altair-4. Only the ship's philologist, Dr. Morbius (Walter Pidgeon), survived; in the intervening decades, Morbius has created an Edenlike world of his own, for the benefit of himself and his nubile young daughter, Altaira (Anne Francis). His private paradise is zealously guarded by Robby the Robot, a piece of technology far in advance of anything on Earth. When Adams and his crew land on Altair-4, Morbius announces that he has no intention of being rescued and returned to Earth.

This photo exhibit is the result of a "people to people" cultural exchange in which the artist participated last October. The artist and group visited Havana, Cienfuegos, and Trinidad. Music and art were everywhere and the crumbling Spanish architecture made for some interesting images. The various images convey his impressions of Cuba and the Cuban people in an apolitical manner. The recent presidential visit and talk of lifting the embargo lend context to the images.

The Hattie Carthan Community Farmers’ Market is opening for its eighth season of healthy food, activities, education, and food justice programming.

This year, the market will continue to grow its youth program in order to employ, educate, and empower local teenagers through the Hattie Carthan Urban Agriculture Youth Corps. We have also worked feverishly to improve the environment and delivery of services to market shoppers through strategic improvements in the physical infrastructure and by partnering with The Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation to increase our local visibility and foot traffic in the markets. That partnership will offer us additional market days at sister market sites in the immediate community, and to host several cultural festivals in the market and garden, author readings in the childrens garden, bike tours which complement our natural programming, and increase advertising and promotions of both markets.

The Large Market will continue its Healthy Gains through Baking with Whole Grains at the newly-improved cooking island area in September; offer eggs and herbs for sale from the Hattie Carthan chicken coops and new herbal farm, and will continue to offer individuals and institutions an opportunity to receive local vegetables, eggs, and herbs by subscribing to our alternative distribution programs—The Mixed Basket weekly Program and Institutional Basket Program.

We will explore the “wilder” western side of the park. Marine Park is the largest city-owned park in Brooklyn at 798 acres. Over half of the park is comprised of coastal forest, grasslands, and salt marsh. Significant investment by NYC Parks and the US Army Corps of Engineers over the last decade have restored vital habitat to the eastern side of the park and to White Island, a man-made island in the mouth of Gerritsen Creek.

The western side of the park (133 acres) contains similarly important natural resources; however it remains highly-impacted and at risk of further degradation due to destructive uses. Maritime Shrubland and Successional Maritime Forest habitat, dominated by sumacs, black cherry, bayberry, and groundsel flourish in pockets and represent a unique forest type in New York City. Other sections of the site, however, are dominated by invasive species such as black locust, Asiatic bittersweet, phragmites, callery pear and mugwort.

Randall's Island has a rich, unique, and varied history. Randall's Island Park Alliance’s staff loves nothing more than to share this fascinating history with interested visitors. Two colossal bridges, both the largest of their kind when completed, span the island, which was once three separate land masses; these were combined by Robert Moses through landfill in the mid-1900s. Come learn more about Robert Moses, the bridges, and the history of the island and the park it became.

Marking Socrates Sculpture Park’s 30th anniversary this year, the institution presents Landmark, a series of artist commissions and projects that transforms the land both physically and symbolically. Once an industrial landfill and illegal dumping ground, Socrates has transformed itself into New York City’s preeminent sculpture park and social space for public art, community engagement and urban discovery. Landmark directly addresses the idea of place as intimately tied to social and ecological structures, to maintenance and stewardship, and to evolution over time.

Landmark features eight different artist projects including a newly commissioned major earthwork by Meg Webster. Additional artists in the exhibition include Abigail DeVille, Brendan Fernandes, Cary Leibowitz, Jessica Segall, Casey Tang, the curatorial collective ARTPORT_making waves, and a Broadway Billboard by Hank Willis Thomas. Since its inception in 1986, Socrates and the surrounding area of Queens, New York has rapidly changed. Whether by engaging directly with the land or commenting on the neighborhood’s cultural and economic shifts, each artwork in Landmark reflects historic transformations in the making.

Join the Fort Tryon Park Trust, NYC Parks, and the Michels family in honoring the late Council Member Stan Michels at the eighth annual Memorial Jazz Concert. Enjoy live jazz by local impresario Marjorie Eliot and her ensemble underneath the majestic elms on the promenade, alongside the beautiful Heather Garden and overlooking the Hudson River.

Stan Michels represented Northern Manhattan in the City Council for 24 years from 1978 through 2001. He was chair of the Committee on Environmental Protection, and his legislative record was notable for his work fighting on behalf of tenants for the expansion of the city’s recycling program, for the protection of our water supply and cleaner air, and against childhood lead poisoning, smoking in public places, and unreasonable noise. He was also a steadfast advocate for parks, allocating over $50 million for park improvements in Washington Heights, Inwood, and Harlem, including virtually every playground in his district. The promenade where this concert is being held was named in his honor shortly before he passed away on August 1, 2008.

We hope you can be with us to remember Stan on the eighth anniversary of his passing.

This program will be accessible to people with disabilities.
