For the first time, Poe Park Visitor Center is highlighting artwork created by NYC Parks youth through an art festival. This three-week art festival will include a variety of artwork created, from September of 2016 through April of 2017, by children who attend NYC Parks youth programming at recreation centers throughout the five boroughs.

Artist and Recreation Specialist Laura Alvarez created monthly curriculums, which were implemented by the recreation team throughout the year. Each lesson plan was based on a famous artist’s work, allowing for cohesion in the exhibit, while also allowing the children to use various styles of art in their own work.

About Poe Park Visitor Center
The Poe Park Visitor Center, a gallery space in the Bronx, offers free dynamic arts and cultural programming from theatrical performances and
concerts to fitness classes and recreational activities. The center hosts rotating art exhibitions, and welcomes visual, literary, and performance
artists from around the city to present workshops to the public.

Marina Andrij?i?-Ojeda, Jon Bunge, Katya Grokhovsky, Rachel Hornaday and Nyugen Smith each consider the effects of natural environments on contemporary art. Their works consider our intimacy with the natural environment while examining the tension created by transforming organic matter into assembled and found artworks.

Partnerships for Parks and ioby will help you slay common fears about grant writing and crowd funding. We’ll cover tips for becoming a confident, successful fundraiser and share resources for further support.

Expert speakers:

Michael Mullaley, Partnerships for Parks

Michael has worked in and around NYC Parks for five years: he worked as an intern in the Sustainability Office and then a Crew Chief overseeing Hurricane Sandy clean-up, before joining the Partnerships for Parks team. He now works as PfP’s Grants Manager and the unofficial office compost expert.

Ethany Uttech, ioby

Ethany focuses on partnership building to connect with new ioby leaders across the country. She has worked in a variety of organizational development, project management, and teaching capacities both with the Brooklyn Arts Council and ioby. Ethany is particularly inspired by projects that increase neighborhood sustainability and livability in tangible ways.

Partnerships Academy workshops are free and open to the public!

Marina Andrij?i?-Ojeda, Jon Bunge, Katya Grokhovsky, Rachel Hornaday and Nyugen Smith each consider the effects of natural environments on contemporary art.

Can fresh, healthy food be free? NYC Urban Field Station's artist in residence Mary Mattingly brings Swale back to Brooklyn this spring to explore this question and many more other critical concerns related to NYC's food and land use policies.

Swale is a collaborative floating food project dedicated to rethinking and challenging New York City's connection to the environment. It represents a partnership among artists, gardeners, landscape architects, educators, students, and several government and non-government organizations. Built on a 130-foot by 40-foot floating platform, Swale contains an edible forest garden. Functioning as both a sculpture and a tool, Swale provides free healthy food at the intersection of public art and service. Swale is intended to reinforce both water and fresh food as a commons.

Join us in welcoming Swale back to NYC's waters! Take a guided tour of Swale at 5:30 p.m., followed by remarks from project collaborators, a ribbon cutting, and refreshments.

  • Welcome by: Renae Reynolds, NYC Urban Field Station
  • Remarks by: Liam Kavanagh, Deputy Commissioner NYC Parks

Join acclaimed photographer Beth Moon, author of Ancient Skies, Ancient Trees, as she delves into her artistic process and the experience of traveling around the world to photograph these natural relics. It is only in the rarest and clearest of nights that we can look up at the sky to find a sprinkling of twinkling stars.

Surrounded by the bright lights of humanity, the infinite majesty of the night sky can only be truly enjoyed by those devoted enough to seek it. Critically-acclaimed photographer Beth Moon’s own appreciation of cosmos inspired her quest, spanning from continent to continent, to some of the darkest corners of world, where constellations and nebulas shine more brightly. Moon’s Ancient Skies, Ancient Trees captures the boundless beauty of trees under the night sky, seemingly undisturbed by humans. Discover her relentless journey—undeterred by knee-high mud, windstorms, and distance—to reveal the rich hues of the night that are often too faint to be seen by the naked eye.

Beth Moon is a photographer based in New York who has gained international recognition for her large-scale, richly-toned platinum prints. Her prints are held in numerous public and private collections and have appeared in more than sixty solo and group exhibitions in the United States, Italy, England, France, Israel, Brazil, Dubai, Singapore, and Canada, receiving widespread critical acclaim. With this new book, she explores color photography for the first time.

About the New York Junior League Playground Improvement Project
For more than 25 years, the Playground Improvement Project (PIP) has been a New York Junior League signature community project. Our volunteers create safe, beautiful, well-organized, and educational play spaces for children and other members of the New York City community. PIP focuses on sites and parks that need major renovation and have the greatest impact on the surrounding community. Weekend cleanup days include landscaping and repairing the parks. We work with over 700 volunteers each season to help improve the park and make a positive impact on the community. Please reach out to playground@nyjl.org with any questions or if you are interested in making a donation to this cause.
