The Hattie Carthan Community Garden cordially invites you to attend The Hattie Carthan Garden's 11th Annual Food Heritage Festival.

This year's theme "Our Food is Our Culture" is a community offering of foods from the African Diaspora. One of the most interesting things about the food of the African Diaspora is how closely it connects the people who prepare it, often without them even realizing it. There are several characteristics that almost all cuisines of the African Diaspora share: seasoning techniques; cooking techniques, such as stewing and frying; and the prevalence of starchy mashes or porridges eaten with stews and soups or on their own. African, Latin, and Caribbean cuisine ingredients are nearly identical, most likely due to the similarity in climate. Tropical foods such as plantains, cassava, coconuts, and palm oil are staples in West African and Afro-Brazilian cooking. The distinctive ingredients of southern cuisine, as well as the styles of cooking them, have been common for centuries in Africa.

We invite you to taste our rich heritage in the bountiful garden! All dishes are homemade and much of our greens and salads are grown in the garden. Guests can also enjoy southeren BBQ, live blues music, live farm animals, and more.

Join Wave Hill’s Curatorial Fellow for a tour of current exhibitions.

In the main gallery, (Not So) Still Life presents novel ways that contemporary artists are transforming the still-life genre to engage with current culture. As a subject, the still life has remained popular since the early Renaissance, featuring compositions of natural and inanimate objects often presented with allegorical connotations. Today, artists are creating new variations by working in photography and sculpture to conflate interior space with landscape, or by using video and animation to convey still life in motion. Artists include Adam Brent, Elizabeth Bryant, Nicole Cohen, Ori Gersht, Jessica Jackson Hutchins, Sue Johnson, Laura Letinsky, Beth Lipman, Erin O’Keefe,Donna Sharrett, Nicolas Touron, Michael Vahrenwald, Rodrigo Valenzuela, and Alex Verhaest. In the Sunroom Project Space, art collective Dark Matters (Aimée Burg, Frank De León-Jones, and Anna Ritsch) create an interactive site for contemplating the invisible energy that fills the universe. Visitors may concoct their own wishes using materials available at stations throughout the space.

This tour is free with admission to the grounds.

City Parks Foundation offers a traveling puppet show, CityParks PuppetMobile, the oldest continually operating company of its kind in the country, which presents free performances and puppet-making workshops in neighborhood parks, recreation centers and schools throughout New York City.

The CityParks PuppetMobile presents the classic Puss in Boots tale, with a twist. Once upon a time there lived a young man named Ferguson Mundingle. Fergus has just the bare essentials in life – a roof over his head, the clothes on his back, and his ever faithful pet cat. One day when lamenting his poor lifestyle, Fergus is astounded when his cat stands up, begins talking and introduces himself as Puss. Puss reveals to Fergus that he is very intelligent and well traveled, and even has an idea to help Fergus improve his situation. With that in mind, Puss dons a snazzy pair of boots and sets off on an exciting magical journey. Despite his reputation as a sly trickster, Puss soon proves himself a caring friend to all, willing to help at any cost!

Contemporary dance company, Drastic Action, will present “Dis/Location (Fort Tryon),” a site-specific dance exploring the immigrant experience. The dance is rooted in artistic director, Aviva Geismar’s, experience as the child of a Holocaust refugee and in interviews she conducted with NYC immigrants from all over the world. The dance explores the trauma of leaving home, the awkwardness of trying to fit into a new culture and the rituals we use to create a sense of home.

“Geismar’s dead on understanding of social realities is like a poke in the ribs… In life and in Geismar’s dances comedy and tragedy can be hard to sort out.” Tom Strini, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

This project is sponsored by the PSC-CUNY Research Foundation, Jody and John Arnhold, The Lower Manhattan Cultural Council and the Fort Tyron Park Trust.

"Dis/Location (Fort Tryon)” is made possible in part with public funds from Creative Engagement, supported by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council and the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and administered by Lower Manhattan Cultural Council.

It's the first Full Moon Treehouse Concert of 2016 in El Jardin del Paraiso.

Earlier, we're going to the parade and might bring back some mythical beings from Coney Isle to cavort and slither and glide with you into the night.

The garden is at her most splendid in June, a green world alive with butterflies, roses, mulberries. We'll try to make sure the gate is open on the Fourth Street side, but if needed just go to the Fifth Street gate and walk through the casita to the far southeast corner of the garden. Bring a blanket; we do have some chairs and a big picnic table (while they're available). And bring someone to share the evening with you.

It's all free; donations will be gratefully accepted.

See star-crossed lovers, cross-dressing, betrayal, intrigue, clowns, and a real dog! . . . Comedy with a pastiche of romance, melancholy, and a startling conclusion.

Directed by Ted Minos. Technical director/Costumes, Catherine Bruce. Music, Luke St. Francis. Fight choreography, Ray A. Rodriguez. Assistant director, Maya Kates. Graphic art, Lee Kaplan. Produced by Ted Minos for Moose Hall Theatre Company.

Marking Socrates Sculpture Park’s 30th anniversary this year, the institution presents Landmark, a series of artist commissions and projects that transforms the land both physically and symbolically. Once an industrial landfill and illegal dumping ground, Socrates has transformed itself into New York City’s preeminent sculpture park and social space for public art, community engagement and urban discovery. Landmark directly addresses the idea of place as intimately tied to social and ecological structures, to maintenance and stewardship, and to evolution over time.

Landmark features eight different artist projects including a newly commissioned major earthwork by Meg Webster. Additional artists in the exhibition include Abigail DeVille, Brendan Fernandes, Cary Leibowitz, Jessica Segall, Casey Tang, the curatorial collective ARTPORT_making waves, and a Broadway Billboard by Hank Willis Thomas. Since its inception in 1986, Socrates and the surrounding area of Queens, New York has rapidly changed. Whether by engaging directly with the land or commenting on the neighborhood’s cultural and economic shifts, each artwork in Landmark reflects historic transformations in the making.

Did you know that the north end of Central Park has a rich history that includes the British having been stationed here during the American Revolution, and American troops stationed there during the War of 1812? Recent archaeological and historical investigations in the area have revealed even more information about how the "Fort Landscape" was used in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, before this area was part of Central Park. This season, join our guides and learn the history of this part of the park, get insight into the studies in the area, and appreciate the recent restorations undertaken by the Conservancy.

Highlights of this tour include McGowan's Pass, Fort Clinton, Nutter's Battery, and the Harlem Meer.

The tour route involves many hills and stairs, and some uneven terrain. The tour starts at Charles A. Dana Discovery Center (inside the park at 110th Street between Fifth and Lenox Avenues), and ends near the park perimeter at 106th Street and Fifth Avenue.

For weather cancellation and other ticket policies, please review the Central Park Conservancy's policies carefully.

Groups of seven or more must schedule a custom tour three weeks in advance at tours@centralparknyc.org.For more information, please review the Frequently Asked Questions.
