After taking in the High Line's stunning sunset views, join us for the perfect Date Night under the stars. Sip wine from Terroir's sundeck bar, listen to live jazz by local artists Tocino Trio while lounging on the Sundeck, and take a closer look at the moon, planets, and stars through high-powered telescopes provided by the Amateur Astronomers Association. Basically, an ideal night out with friends or a date.

About Tocino Trio
You might recognize this guest artist, since he has been working at the High Line as a "park ranger" since 2011. John Speck, bandleader of the Tocino Trio, is a seasoned and versatile trombonist who continues to perform and record with legendary musicians across genres, internationally. He is equally at home in performance art and popular music settings. For this occasion he will be mixing Jazz roots with celestial lounge influences to accompany the High Line's stargazers.

Partners
Stargazing at the High Line is presented by Friends of the High Line in partnership with the Amateur Astronomers Association.

Support
Public Programs on the High Line are supported by Altman Foundation. These programs are supported, in part, with public funds from the New York City Council, under the leadership of Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito.

Marking Socrates Sculpture Park’s 30th anniversary this year, the institution presents Landmark, a series of artist commissions and projects that transforms the land both physically and symbolically. Once an industrial landfill and illegal dumping ground, Socrates has transformed itself into New York City’s preeminent sculpture park and social space for public art, community engagement and urban discovery. Landmark directly addresses the idea of place as intimately tied to social and ecological structures, to maintenance and stewardship, and to evolution over time.

Landmark features eight different artist projects including a newly commissioned major earthwork by Meg Webster. Additional artists in the exhibition include Abigail DeVille, Brendan Fernandes, Cary Leibowitz, Jessica Segall, Casey Tang, the curatorial collective ARTPORT_making waves, and a Broadway Billboard by Hank Willis Thomas. Since its inception in 1986, Socrates and the surrounding area of Queens, New York has rapidly changed. Whether by engaging directly with the land or commenting on the neighborhood’s cultural and economic shifts, each artwork in Landmark reflects historic transformations in the making.

Recent archaeological and historical investigations in the area have revealed even more information about how the "Fort Landscape" was used in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, before this area was part of Central Park. This season, join our guides and learn the history of this part of the park, get insight into the studies in the area, and appreciate the recent restorations undertaken by the Conservancy.

Highlights of this tour include McGowan's Pass, Fort Clinton, Nutter's Battery, and the Harlem Meer.

The tour route involves many hills and stairs, and some uneven terrain. The tour starts at Charles A. Dana Discovery Center (inside the park at 110th Street between Fifth and Lenox Avenues), and ends near the park perimeter at 106th Street and Fifth Avenue.

For weather cancellation and other ticket policies, please review the Central Park Conservancy's policies carefully.

Groups of seven or more must schedule a custom tour three weeks in advance at tours@centralparknyc.org.For more information, please review the Frequently Asked Questions.

City Parks Foundation offers a traveling puppet show, CityParks PuppetMobile, the oldest continually operating company of its kind in the country, which presents free performances and puppet-making workshops in neighborhood parks, recreation centers and schools throughout New York City.

The CityParks PuppetMobile presents the classic Puss in Boots tale, with a twist. Once upon a time there lived a young man named Ferguson Mundingle. Fergus has just the bare essentials in life – a roof over his head, the clothes on his back, and his ever faithful pet cat. One day when lamenting his poor lifestyle, Fergus is astounded when his cat stands up, begins talking and introduces himself as Puss. Puss reveals to Fergus that he is very intelligent and well traveled, and even has an idea to help Fergus improve his situation. With that in mind, Puss dons a snazzy pair of boots and sets off on an exciting magical journey. Despite his reputation as a sly trickster, Puss soon proves himself a caring friend to all, willing to help at any cost!

Capoeira is a unique Brazilian art form that has evolved over centuries into an exciting combination of martial arts, dance, music, and acrobatics. Some of capoeira’s benefits include strength, flexibility, stamina, overall fitness, and confidence. Benefits of capoeira for kids include promoting social interaction and sense of belonging, building confidence, discipline and self esteem, promoting a healthy lifestyle so children become active and healthy, and develop cultural awareness and tolerance. Wear comfortable clothing.

Capoeira was developed in Brazil, but its history extends to Africa and tribes from Angola. Slaves living on Brazilian Plantations who weren’t allowed to openly practice traditional forms of self-defense developed an ingenious method of disguising their training by combining it with dance-like movements, singing, and the rhythms of primitive instruments.

Join professional chef and culinary historian Carl Raymond for a unique tour of the Merchant’s House. The tour will focus on the culinary customs of mid-19th century New York, including favorite foods, cooking methods, dining etiquette, and entertaining.

In the 1850s kitchen, you’ll learn about nearby Tompkins’ Market, where the Tredwells’ bought their favorite foods (take-out, too), and how the American kitchen and cooking techniques have evolved over time. You’ll also hear details of the lives of the Irish servants who lived in the Tredwells’ home and cooked and served their meals.

In the elegant dining room, you’ll learn about service for an elegant dinner party – a la Francaise? A la Russe? – and the essential rules of dining etiquette. In the formal front parlor, you’ll hear about the family’s elaborate entertainments such as the famous New Year’s Day “calling.”

The tour, which also discusses the influential cookbook writers and cookbooks of the mid-19th century, covers all four floors of the museum, including the bedroom floor and servants’ quarters.

There will be a reception in the garden, catered by Food Trends.

Here you’ll learn about plant maintenance and care throughout the seasons while helping to beautify Sherman Creek Park.

New members are required to attend an Orientation Session, held on the first Saturday of the month. Call 917-291-6436 or email volunteer@nyrp.org for more details.
