Sidney Lumet's The Wiz is the film version of the popular Broadway musical that retells the events of L. Frank Baum's classic novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz through the eyes of a young African-American kindergarten teacher who's "never been below 125th Street." Leaving a large family dinner to chase her dog into a snowstorm, Dorothy (Diana Ross) is swept up by a cyclone and transplanted to the land of Oz -- which looks suspiciously like a skewed version of the run-down Manhattan of the late '70s. Landing on top of the Wicked Witch of the East, the puzzled Dorothy is greeted by munchkins who peel themselves from a graffiti mural and sing to her about the Wiz (Richard Pryor), a powerful wizard living in Emerald City who can help her get home. On her journey down the yellow brick road, she encounters a garbage-stuffed scarecrow (Michael Jackson) in a junkyard, a broken-down tin man (Nipsey Russell) caught in the decay of an old amusement park, and a cowardly lion (Ted Ross) posing as a stone statue outside a museum. The quartet tangles with a subway station that comes to life, a poppy den, and a gaggle of motorcycle henchman on their way to the Wiz -- who orders them to kill the Wicked Witch of the West (a sweatshop tyrant) before he will grant them their wishes. The Wiz has about double the large-scale production numbers of The Wizard of Oz (1939), with songs written and composed by Charlie Smalls. Author: Derek Armstrong

In 1998, Van Cortlandt Park was designated an Important Bird Area (IBA) in New York State by National Audubon. About 230 different bird species have been recorded in Van Cortlandt Park and over 60 species breed here, as determined by the 2006 Breeding and Migrating Bird Census Project in Van Cortlandt Park—a study of an Important Bird Area conducted by NYC Audubon. Breeders include the great-horned owl, eastern wood-pewee, great crested flycatcher, northern rough-winged swallo, and rose-breasted grosbeak with the American robin and the gray catbird, being the most populous breeding species.

The objective of this exhibition is to create awareness of the multitude of talent in the Latino community of the Bronx. We have developed an international network of Latin American artists, as well as established the opportunity to exhibit the best of their works. This event hopes to inspire the creative mind and challenge the contemporary global art community. This group exhibition presents art as an expression of the human condition—reflecting notions of progress, civilization, welfare, society, and culture. The event is family oriented and celebrates not only the richness of the Latin American art but also the diversity of our community.

The Hattie Carthan Community Farmers’ Market is opening for its eighth season of healthy food, activities, education, and food justice programming.

This year, the market will continue to grow its youth program in order to employ, educate, and empower local teenagers through the Hattie Carthan Urban Agriculture Youth Corps. We have also worked feverishly to improve the environment and delivery of services to market shoppers through strategic improvements in the physical infrastructure and by partnering with The Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation to increase our local visibility and foot traffic in the markets. That partnership will offer us additional market days at sister market sites in the immediate community, and to host several cultural festivals in the market and garden, author readings in the childrens garden, bike tours which complement our natural programming, and increase advertising and promotions of both markets.

The Large Market will continue its Healthy Gains through Baking with Whole Grains at the newly-improved cooking island area in September; offer eggs and herbs for sale from the Hattie Carthan chicken coops and new herbal farm, and will continue to offer individuals and institutions an opportunity to receive local vegetables, eggs, and herbs by subscribing to our alternative distribution programs—The Mixed Basket weekly Program and Institutional Basket Program.

Throughout history, scarecrows have been the guardians of gardens. Sculptor and artist Ray Villafane returns to New York Botanical Garden to create an original installation that explores the evolution of the scarecrow in the United States, from its everyday role in agriculture to its status as a cultural icon in films and comic books.

This art display, presented by the Tri State Cadillac Dealers, features larger-than-life sculptures crafted from natural materials and set amidst the Garden’s landscape.

Explore the detailed display during the day, discover its surprises after dark, and enjoy special experiences on select dates from Cadillac.

Looking for a full body workout to kickstart your fall fitness routine? Join us at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex for our first ever Tabatathon.

Tabata training is one of the most popular forms of interval training. It consists of ultra-high intensity exercises in specific 20-second-on, 10-second-off intervals with 8 rounds for a total of 4 minutes. Tabata was created by Dr. Izumi Tabata. Along with his team, he conducted a variety of fitness related research. They concluded that high-intensity interval training has a greater impact on both the cardiovascular and anaerobic (muscle) systems. By pairing the two, participants can see far greater gains in fitness and better overall health and wellness.

This total body workout will test your ability and open your eyes to a new form of training!

If you are interested in this total body fitness event, please come join us at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Saturday, October 8th, from 10:00am - 1:00pm.

Based on the gothic novel by Mary Shelley, this 1935 classic picks up right after the events in the film, “Frankenstein”. Having survived the villagers’ attack, “the Monster” wants a mate. But, Dr. Frankenstein refuses and the Monster kidnaps his wife. Hoping to recover his wife, he builds “the Bride”. But, there’s just one problem, she has no desire for the Monster. Boris Karloff reprises his role as “the Monster” and Elsa Lanchester gives an iconic performance as “the Bride”.
