The Bronx is both a place and a collection of metaphors, a peninsula attached to the mainland in a city of islands. In many ways, it is defined by its diversities—social, demographic, geographic and temporal. Hospitals, museums, universities, formal gardens, beaches, parks, and historical sites are prominent features of the landscape. Massive public housing developments, neighborhoods of six-story apartment buildings and private homes, and bucolic landscapes surrounding long-standing estates can be found within the borders of the Bronx.

The photographers represented in this exhibit are connected to the Bronx by birth, residency, work, or affinity. Each has a unique history, a particular point of view, and an evolving personal story. Who we are as individuals and as a group is represented in this exhibit. We are creating a photographic archive of the Bronx. The Bronx Photographers Collaborative hopes these images speak to, inform, provoke, and inspire you to join us in documenting, celebrating, and advocating for the borough that means so much to us and has contributed so much to who we are.

Culled from the ongoing series “Jewels from The Hinterland” (2013–present), this exhibition renders verdant alcoves and expansive green spaces throughout New York City, as well as select sites across the United States. Featuring black and brown artists, writers, culture workers, and thinkers positioned centrally in each image, A Collective Utterance offers an exploration into the tender interiors of individuals that constitute the creative communities of a city, through an associative, atmospheric mapping of its outdoor spaces.

Spanning sites such as Riverside Park, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, and Central Park, Green’s photographs present quiet, quotidian portraits—nuanced compositions that revel in her subjects’ subtle gestures, varied postures, and soft gazes. Documenting a community that is tight-knit yet sprawling in scope, Green’s project deeply engages with the historical and social role of photographic portrait, as a tool deployed to communicate, classify, or reinforce particular notions of subjectivity. Yet “Jewels from the Hinterland” destabilizes such structures, with photographic portraits that are as much a product of the subject’s agency, as they are of Green’s intent to portray their complexity. Through these insistently beautiful photographs, we access a kaleidoscopic consideration of what it means to find solace, comfort, and visibility within a community often relegated to the margins.

A project such as “Jewels from the Hinterland” takes on a particular type of urgency within the context of this sociocultural moment of seemingly interminable crisis, where the imaging of black and brown bodies is often deployed to a particular end. Whether portrayed in a mythical manner or as the sites of structural or physical trauma, black and brown bodies are ever in a state of being performed upon. But here, they are left to be. Collectively, these images attest to the tenderness and the strength, the beauty and the intricacy, that is present if only one were to spend time, and look and listen closely.

A Collective Utterance is organized by Oluremi C. Onabanjo.

An accomplished Americana instrumentalist with foundations in jazz and swing music, Phoebe Hunt has a skill for taking seemingly disparate elements and pulling them together into a dazzling kaleidoscope of lush, coherent sound and rhythm patterns. The result is music that swells, crashes and breathes organically under her soulful, plaintive voice. The music seemingly transcends traditional genre, by weaving exotic rhythmic concepts within her roots of Americana, Country, and Texas Tinged Swing. Her latest release is the culmination of a five-year journey that has taken her from her Austin roots through Music Row, Brooklyn, and even to India to study with seventh-generation master violinist Kala Ramnath.

Sunset Wednesdays take place rain or shine! All Sunset Wednesday Concerts are held on the Great Lawn. In case of inclement weather, concerts will be moved indoors to Armor Hall with overflow space in the Mark Twain Room and the covered terrace behind Wave Hill House.

Before the screenings, there will be a performance at 7:00 p.m.; the film begins at sundown.

Black Mother (USA/Jamaica)
Directed by Khalik Allah, 2018, 77 mins.
Programmed by Rooftop Films.

Part film, part baptism, Black Mother director Khalik Allah brings us on a spiritual odyssey through Jamaica. Soaking up its bustling metropolises and tranquil countryside, Allah introduces us to a succession of vividly rendered souls who call this island home. Their candid testimonies create a polyphonic symphony, set against a visual prayer of indelible portraiture. Immersed into the sacred, the profane, and everything in-between, Black Mother channels rebellion and reverence into a deeply personal ode informed by Jamaica’s turbulent history and the urgent present.

Preceded by:
Symphony of a Sad Dea
Directed by Carlos Morales Mancilla, 2018, Mexico, 12 mins.
Programmed by Rooftop Films

Hugo ran away from the cartel violence in Guerrero, Mexico. As he watches whales swimming in the cold sea of Baja California Norte, he narrates how his 14 year old brother was brutally murdered. At only 16 years old, Hugo is burdened by profound sadness but is driven by the desire to cross the wall and reunite with his father – the only remaining member of his family.

Onabanjo.

Join Hunters Poing Parks Conservancy and CinemaLIC for a free movie in the park presented by Nest Seekers. Film begins at dusk

Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan star in Nora Ephron's wonderfully romantic comedy about two people drawn together by destiny. Hanks stars as Sam Baldwin, a widowed father who, thanks to the wiles of his worried son, becomes a reluctant guest on a radio call-in show. He's an instant hit with thousands of female listeners who deluge his Seattle home with letters of comfort. Meanwhile, inspired in equal parts by Sam's story and by classic Hollywood romance, writer Annie Reed (Ryan) becomes convinced that it's her destiny to meet Sam. There are just two problems: Annie's engaged to someone else and Sam doesn't know yet that they're made for each other. Co-starring Rosie O'Donnell, Rita Wilson and Rob Riener.

Onabanjo.
