In honor of Earth Day, the Bronx River Alliance is teaming up with United by Blue for a cleanup at Soundview Park.

Also called the "Gateway to the Bronx River" Soundview Park's stunning waterfront green space sits at the union of the Bronx River and East River. The park stretches for 205 acres, and is an epicenter of activity offering soccer and baseball field, basketball courts, a running track, and an amphitheater, not to mention the beautiful walking/biking trail that stretches throughout the space. The rocky banks provide amazing views of the river and surrounding land, and the tidal marsh area is vital to wildlife.

Hiking is the ultimate way to enjoy the outdoors and a fun way to reduce stress. Regardless of the intensity level, it is a great way to burn calories and stay fit.

Our Urban Park Ranger hiking guides will introduce you to the hidden gems of New York City parks. On our nature hikes, you can take an hour to unplug from the world and immerse yourself in the wonders of nature.

Vigorous hikes may include walking long distances, with hills and rugged terrain. For all hiking programs we recommend wearing comfortable shoes or boots, and packing water and a light snack.

It is said that the Internet is making the world a smaller place, connecting people and places that were once hugely separated by many miles and mindsets. However, the world has been getting “smaller” for years — in large part due to immigration and the free flow of ideas that come with it.

Now on view at the Conference House Park visitor center and at the Biddle House in Conference House Park, this exhibit highlights narratives of important pioneers in the fields of maritime navigation and communication so people today can understand how our ancestors started making the world “smaller” slowly but surely over centuries by learning how to travel vast oceans. The exhibit also includes a selection of devices, navigational maps and prints from the Museum of Maritime Navigation and Communication (located in Rosebank, S.I.), devoted to preserving and displaying devices and equipment that were used over the years to navigate waters worldwide. This exhibit also includes a working model of a dry dock.

Obie Award-winning director Robert O’Hara (Bootycandy, The Brother/Sister Plays (Part 2)) brings a warring King and his band of brothers to communities all across New York with Mobile Unit’s spring production of Henry V.

Insulted by the regent of France, Britain’s King Henry V decides to wage war and claim the throne across the Channel. But Henry’s charm only distracts the soldiers for so long before the dire stakes of their task call into question the King’s true motives and direction. Resonating across the centuries—wherever there may be a kingdom for a stage, and royalty to act—Shakespeare’s drama about invasion, ego and leadership, delves into history’s thorniest questions: What makes a person worthy of wearing the crown, and what do they owe the people they lead?

Seating is limited so please RSVP to benny.adorno@parks.nyc.gov.

About the Public Theater Mobile Unit

The Public Theater’s Mobile Unit is a reinvention of Joseph Papp’s “Mobile Theater,” which began in 1957. Papp’s original touring company evolved into the New York Shakespeare Festival, and ultimately became The Public Theater. All of it was built on a simple idea: Culture belongs to everyone.

This idea remains at the heart of The Public Theater’s work to this day. And our Mobile Unit still takes this mission out to the communities across New York City, providing free performances to all. The Mobile Unit presents free Shakespeare to prisons, homeless shelters, and community centers throughout New York’s boroughs. Over the years, the Mobile Unit has served thousands of audiences with critically acclaimed productions. In addition to the community tour, each Mobile Unit show “sits down” at The Public Theater’s Astor Place home to perform for Public audiences and community organizations from all over the city.

Nothing can be written overnight. Not really. So what will it take for you to stay with a story from its beginning, middle, and to its very, very end? Min Jin Lee, author of novel Free Food for Millionaires and Pachinko, will raise the necessary questions that may matter to each author and help compel the author to stay the course from the first draft to last revision. Exercises that prompt the writer to consider personal experiences with race and immigration will comprise the first half of the class, and we will workshop the exercises in the second half.

RSVP at faptlatimerhouse.eventbrite.com.

Instructor's Bio

Min Jin Lee is the author of Free Food for Millionaires and Pachinko, which was a finalist for the National Book Award for fiction and a New York Times bestseller.

Calling all park lovers! This spring, the New York Junior League's Playground Improvement Project committee ("PIP") invites you to join them in rolling up your sleeves to help revitalize Corlears Hook Park!

Throughout five weekends in April and May New York Junior League volunteers and community volunteers will spend a day in the park (rain or shine) gardening, landscaping, painting, and completing other tasks to help spruce up this highly-used space. All volunteers will be provided with breakfast, lunch, and a t-shirt.

Registration
All participants (ages 16 and older) must register in advance at nyjl.org/playground. Registration closes when capacity is reached or the Wednesday prior to that weekend's park days.

About the New York Junior League Playground Improvement Project
For more than 25 years, the Playground Improvement Project (PIP) has been a New York Junior League signature community project. Our volunteers create safe, beautiful, well-organized, and educational play spaces for children and other members of the New York City community. PIP focuses on sites and parks that need major renovation and have the greatest impact on the surrounding community. Weekend cleanup days include landscaping and repairing the parks. PIP works with over 700 volunteers each season to help improve the park and make a positive impact on the community.

Please reach out to playground@nyjl.org with any questions or if you are interested in making a donation to this cause.

Please note: this event has been cancelled.

This hands-on workshop will use the backdrop of the Fantastic Voyage exhibition to explore the history of the Green Revolution and the rise of industrial food production. We will take a closer look at how food has migrated from a source of health and wellness to a co-opted capitalist tool designed to create a dependency on (and some would say addiction to) processed foods and all of its sugar, salt, and fat configurations.

Participants will learn how to make a hibiscus sports drink as an example of regaining a comprehensive understanding of food for sale versus the food we grow and/or prepare ourselves.

This workshop is offered as part of the Fantastic Voyage exhibition by artists Stefani Bardin and Assaf Tamir. The immersive installation explores the role of food production in our personal health and the health of the environment.

Green Worker Co-ops and Green Feen Organix invite volunteers and people of all ages for a day of environmentally-focused activities at Synergi Urban Garden 2.0.

Twenty years ago, having access to clean and natural spaces for Bronxites was difficult or non-existent. On Earth Day, we will honor the efforts of groups, residents, churches, schools, and YOU, that have brought the Bronx new life and a greener future.

Bring yourself, a friend, or loved one to join us in celebrating the work of co-ops and organizations in the Bronx!

The event will kick off with a day of recreation and service. There will be activities for all ages:

  • a nature scavenger hunt
  • hip-hop and composting
  • eco-friendly demos led by our cooperatives (DIY natural cleaning products, handmade jewelry from recycled materials, etc.)
  • co-operative olympics (team-building activities)
  • and much more to be announced!

Do your part to ensure NYC Gardens stay beautiful and litter-free by volunteering for our clean-up.
Volunteers will work on park clean-up to improve the garden, and participate and assist in the activities for the day. (Students that need to fulfill a service requirement are welcome!). Volunteer assignments will be explained during the 11:30 a.m. orientation. Please arrive early so as to ensure a timely start. Light refreshments will be served. Volunteers must wear closed-toed shoes, as well as dress comfortably in clothes that can get dirty.

Volunteer Expectations:

  1. Commitment to serve a shift of two hours (choose a time between Noon and 4:00 p.m., orientation at 11:30 a.m.).
  2. Commitment to work in the assigned function, with willingness to cooperate with all GWC and Green Feen staff and Synergi Urban Garden partner staff and volunteers.
  3. Commitment to perform assigned responsibilities as required.
  4. Willingness to work outdoors in shine or rain, and ability to handle gardening tools.

To become a volunteer, sign up online at bit.ly/BXEarthDayVolunteer. Together we'll celebrate the day's accomplishments and enjoy some refreshments.

The immersive installation at the Freshkills Park Studio + Gallery explores the role of food production in our personal health and the health of the environment.

Traditional Chinese thought has played an important role in the design of traditional Chinese gardens from the Song dynasty onward. In this lecture, a collaboration between Snug Harbor Education and the CUNY College of Staten Island’s East Asian Studies Department, we will look at how these and other ideas are embodied in the NY Chinese Scholar’s Garden. After the presentation, we will tour the garden to see these concepts and design elements in action.
