With a hint of dark humor, Zane York transforms traditional floral still lives and familiar scenes into unexpected compositions in Nature Morte. Clusters of insects morph into floral arrangements, and cats in the clutches of pigeons rise to the heavens. Executed in the style and skill of famed Dutch masters, York reminds us of the mortality, transience, and vulnerability of all living things.

Visit Poe Park Visitor Center for our new exhibit City Birds by Elana Amity. The exhibit will be on view at the Poe Park Visitor Center on Tuedays through Saturdays from March 4 through March 29. There will be an opening reception with a Q&A session on Saturday, March 11.

About City Birds
Raised in the Bronx, Elana Amity visited Poe Park numerous times. As a young child she roamed in and around the cottage, and as a teenager she and her friends danced while a band played in the gazebo. Edgar Allan Poe’s poem "The Raven" was brought to life by her father who loved reciting poetry. Ironically, Poe completed his final revision of "The Raven" while living on 85 Amity Street, now West Third Street, in New York’s Greenwich Village. Amity’s current work includes numerous paintings and monotypes of birds found in New York City’s parks, sidewalks, and window sills. Her birch bark paintings reflect images and textures found in natural settings. Her illustrated poems include the works of Wallace Steven, Edgar Allan Poe, William Wordsworth, and Wilfred Owen.

Artist Bio
New York City artist, Elana Amity, began her career as a teacher and freelance illustrator. She served on the board of the Society of Illustrators for many years. In 1984 she joined the faculty of LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts where she taught illustration, painting and drawing. In 2010 she opened a studio in Manhattan’s Garment District. Her paintings, drawings and prints capture both fleeting and enduring moments oflife in cities, nature and beyond. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and public spaces at home and abroad.

This exhibit of clay castings by Susan Stair forms portraits in trees used by the Lenape Indians for food and medicine. Conference House Park is home to the largest burial site of the pre-Columbian Lenape tribe in the five boroughs of New York City.

Susan Stair worked with John Kilcullen, Director of Conference House Park and certified arborist, in choosing the trees that were important to the Lenape. A sculptor who fixes her actions in the material, Stair captures the spirit of living trees as she reveals species, age and endurance. Viewers are encouraged to touch her work in the way one would meet a tree.

Lenape Landscape: Trees as Tonic has been extended and runs through Saturday, April 29, 2017 in the Lenape Gallery at Conference House Park Visitor Center. The gallery is open on Mondays through Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Admission is free. The gallery is closed on holidays.

Viewers will be encouraged to partake in a walk using a trail map identifying the trees included in the exhibit.

Spring marks a new cycle of life—trees are leafing out, buds are bursting, and migrating birds are returning to their summer homes at Wave Hill. Spend one, two or three afternoons exploring Wave Hill’s grounds and gardens and practicing methods for recording your observations, then constructing a nature journal. Harness your powers of observation to closely examine the budding leaves, flowers and insects of spring.

Today’s program: Watercolor paints are a great way to capture the delicacy of new spring growth. Master a simple under-painting technique for achieving a cohesive image, then complete a watercolor painting inspired by Wave Hill’s grounds to create an impressive cover for your nature journal.

This program is geared toward families with children between the ages of six and 10. Space is limited.

Please note: This event was rescheduled from April 7 due to emergency maintenance.

Join us for a talk about the book: The Dancing Gangsters of The South Bronx By Willie “MB” Estrada followed by a dance demonstration.

During the Summer of 1974, Henry DeSosa, President of the “The Imperial Bachelors” gang along with St. Mary’s Recreation Center Manager Rita Pasgulaqua, joined forces to help bring peace into the community by hosting weekly Latin Hustle parties. Henry served as the DJ for those weekly events, however, it was Rita who got the Imperial Bachelors to take off their gang colors as a condition of hosting those parties. Several other gangs followed their lead and a truce between all gang members was established at the events and peace in the community soon followed.

This is also where teenagers from the Puerto Rican community cultivated and nurtured the last original partners dance ever created in New York City, and they called it, “The Latin Hustle”.

About Willie Estrada
Willie Estrada is dancer, author, actor, entertainer and music business impresario. He is one of the pioneers and forefathers of the Latin Hustle. Currently Willie is a technical consultant and actor on the hit Netflix Series “TheGet Down” and works directly with Baz Lhurmann and his team to collaborate on the storyline for the show.

Let us know you're coming!
Please RSVP at tidancesm.eventbrite.com. There will be a dance demonstration after the talk.

RED ALERT! 6th Annual Egg Hunt has moved from McGolrick Park to tbd Brooklyn (224 Franklin St, Brooklyn, NY 11222).

Town Square is excited to hold our 6th Annual McGolrick Park Egg Hunt! As with last year, we'll have thousands and thousands of eggs and photo opportunities with the Easter Bunny. We'll enjoy fun arts & crafts and face painting while supplies last.

We'll also rock with DJ Natalie and Baby DJ School, Laura Dayan and Rock'N Lolo, and Esther and Thunder & Sunshine! Wear your very best spring bonnet and join us at the park!

Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Egg hunts will be arranged for groups of 10 kids between noon and 3:00 p.m. as long as supplies last. This year, we're going to try something different. You will select the hour of your egg hunt (ie. 12-1, 1-2 or 2-3) when you purchase your egg hunt ticket. As a result, you can better plan your afternoon, and we can avoid a long line at the beginning of the event. Don't worry if you miss your hour; we will make sure that you'll join a hunt.

Please contact us if you’d like to lend a helping hand.
