The Hattie Carthan Community Farmers Market is opening for its ninth season of healthy food, activities, education and food justice programming. The Hattie Carthan Community Farmers Market has engaged hundreds of local youths, distributed over 10 tons of fresh food ,recycled 24 tons of organic waste via its market compost dropoff operation, hosted 240 community market sessions, delivered 550 cooking demonstrations, 16 bread baking workshops and more in its eight seasons of operation.

2017 brings several new initiatives to the Market. This season, our newly formed food justice collective will introduce food justice activities around the newly constructed food justice mural. The market continues to grow its youth program in order to employ, educate, and empower local teenagers through the Hattie Carthan Urban Agriculture Youth Corps. Through strategic partnerships with local partners, the markets have introduced bus stop and subway advertisements, author readings in our children's garden, and weekly deliveries to Head Start and hospital outpatient centers. Our Healthy Gains through Baking with Whole Grains takes place in the cooking island area in September. The markets will continue to offer individuals and institutions an opportunity to receive local vegetables, local eggs and herbs by subscribing to our alternative distribution programs: The Mixed Basket Weekly and Institutional Basket Program.

Ray Felix presents a dark, yet whimsical tale based on the life of Edgar Allen Poe while residing in the Bronx. Based on both fact and fiction, "Poe is the Raven" gives new light and insight on the secret life of Edgar Allan Poe.

Inspired by his visits to Poe Cottage, Ray Felix became intrigued by spiritual ether surrounding the Poe property and the stories told by the long time
tour guide of the Poe cottage. Felix's imprint "Bronx Heroes," takes stories from American History and transforms them into super heroes. Felix believes this allows Bronxites to appreciate everyday heroes from Bronx history and gain a greater understanding of their borough’s historically rich past.

“We are a group of engaged citizens whose mission is to preserve the history and beautify Moore-Jackson Cemetery, a protected landmark right in our backyard!”

Moore-Jackson Cemetery is a historic cemetery located in Woodside active from before 1733 to at least 1868. It is one of only a few colonial-era cemeteries in New York City and was designated as a New York City landmark in 1997. We encourage volunteers to help out at the Moore-Jackson Cemetery Revitalization Project. As part of Phase 1, we are getting together for several community cleanup sessions.

Join Phase 1 of the Moore-Jackson Revitalization Project where we will be clearing debris and weeds that have completely taken over. There is a lot of work that needs to be done so the work will be divided up into different work sessions in October before it gets too cold.

If you have any questions, please reach us at moorejacksoncemetery@gmail.com.

Sit with your wee ones and listen to stories of the “people of the mounds,” the fairies and elves found in Celtic mythology, as told by guest storyteller Marianne McShane and her blue harp. Then travel into Wave Hill’s woodland, and, using only natural materials and a bit of jute twine, create your own tiny, fairy-sized dwelling using found sticks, leaves, moss and bark, or string together a series of autumn leaves to form a fall wand or crown—and behold the magic!

At 11:00 a.m. and at noon, guest musicians Terry McCann, a guitarist and singer, and Stephen Gara on the uilleann pipes (a delicate version of the standard bagpipe), the flute and the tin whistle, offer a short concert of Irish jigs, reels and songs. The pair will also visit Wave Hill’s woodland with their instruments, to serenade the aos sí and lead a short autumn fairy parade.

Free, and admission to the grounds is free until noon.

Cultivate an intimate understanding of the interconnections between soil, plants, and human health by working directly with the land. We’ll be getting our hands and knees dirty with tasks that include soil care, weeding, planting, bed preparation, composting, etc. Bring a water bottle, sun hat, closed-toed shoes, and wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty.

Registration is requested.

First Wednesday of the month: Meet at Heritage Farm
Third Saturday of the month: Meet at Compost Demonstration Garden (next to Heritage Farm)

The NYC Compost Project, created by the NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY) in 1993, works to rebuild NYC’s soils by providing New Yorkers with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities they need to make and use compost locally. NYC Compost Project programs are implemented by DSNY-funded teams at seven host organizations, including Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Big Reuse, Earth Matter NY, Lower East Side Ecology Center, Queens Botanical Garden, Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden, and The New York Botanical Garden. An exhibition of site-specific artworks by Andrea Arroyo will be on view at Maggie’s Garden and Friendship Garden in Harlem, through October 31, 2017.

“Women with Wings” will feature a series of artworks inspired by the women of New York, including the historical and contemporary women who make Uptown Manhattan a diverse and vibrant community. Each piece, executed in mixed media and repurposed materials, is integrated within the natural environment of plants, grass and other elements of each garden. “Women with Wings” creates a multi-level conversation bridging local culture, nature and history that connects the past and the present.

Artworks include “Maggie’s Pearls of Wisdom”, a piece executed in acrylic, repurposed materials and beads, integrated with a Magnolia tree and inspired by the legacy of Maggie Burnett, beloved Harlem resident and founder of Maggie’s Garden, and “Women in Movement” a piece featuring multiple women silhouettes on multiple wheels hanging from light posts inside the garden.

Today, the name of Frederick Law Olmsted is closely associated with Central Park. As a designer, he helped create the layout and look of the park.

Frederick Law Olmsted (1822-1903), the father of American landscape architecture, may have more to do with the way America looks than anyone else. Beginning in 1857 with the design of Central Park in New York City, he created designs for thousands of landscapes, including many of the world's most important parks.

Join the Ranger's for a stroll through Central Park and discover the vision Frederick Olmsted had for the design of the park.

Celebrating 50 Years of Public Art in NYC Parks]]> http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2017/10/21/its-happening-celebrating-50-years-of-public-art-in-nyc-parks http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2017/10/21/its-happening-celebrating-50-years-of-public-art-in-nyc-parks Date: October 21, 2017

This year NYC Parks is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its Art in the Parks program. Since its creation in 1967, Art in the Parks has featured over 2,000 works of art. On Saturday, October 21, NYC Parks is transforming Central Park into a stage, museum, and art studio for a free day of public art to celebrate this milestone. Art lovers, families, and park-goers will be delighted by free art exhibits, performances, and hands-on art workshops in Central Park’s beautiful East Pinetum field.

More than 100 artworks, workshops, and performances will take place throughout the day. Some activities include:

  • Bronx Museum: Button-making based on Bronx public artworks
  • Materials for the Arts: Reuse Sculpture Station
  • Blythe Cain: Painting public artworks with natural pigments
  • Kim Holleman: Trailer Park-let
  • Sing for Hope: the city’s favorite pianos
  • Amanda Long and Historic House Trust: Paper marbling workshop Change to Amanda Long and Historic House Trust: Paper marbling wishes
  • Groundswell: Sketchbook Making
  • United Photo Industries: Create a zine
  • Urban Field Station: Write with a tree alphabet
  • LMCC/Dances for a Variable Population: Dance workshop for all
  • Art Built: What it means to be a global citizen
  • City Arts, Inc: Pieces for Peace
  • Dream Yard: Mosaic workshop with recyclable material

  • Art Students League: Origami and collage workshop
  • Public Art Fund: Art-making workshop based on works of Ai Weiwei

  • Art Production Fund: Art Sundae! Create a public art project with Elise Peterson
  • Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance: Wind Chimes Made from Recyclables with Evelyn Suero
  • Katya Grokhovsky: Slow Dance with Me

  • Broadway Mall Association: Collaborative Clay Mural Making with Joy Brown
  • The Moving Company performance with Tina Wang, Scynge Xing, Tamar Ettun

As NYC Parks’ public art program took shape in the 1960s, artistic events called “happenings” popped up in parks across the city. Blurring the line between art and everyday life, these fleeting performances combined sculpture, music, theater, dance, and poetry. They varied in size and sophistication, but always relied on audience participation.

NYC Parks’ 50th anniversary celebration "It’s Happening!" captures the same creative spirit with dynamic public artworks, hands-on workshops, and performances.

Step back in time to 1865, when family patriarch Seabury Tredwell died at home in his second floor bedroom. Poignant scenes of death and grief recreated in the house will explore mid-19th century mourning customs. Pay your last respects at his deathbed upstairs, or join the mourning in the double parlor, hung with black crepe and set for a mid-19th century funeral. And stage your own “postmortem” photograph in our 19th century coffin. Then share with your friends on Instagram and Twitter. #mhmcoffin2017

Also on exhibit, Tredwell family photographs and mourning attire and accessories, including jewelry made of hair and jet, a black net veil, several bodices and shawls, and two 1870s mourning gowns.

Included with regular admission; reservations not required.

Please note: This exhibit is on view from noon to 8:00 p.m. on Thursdays and from noon to 5:00 p.m. on Fridays through Mondays, from October 5 through October 30.
