In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City—a place where history is made, not merely recorded.

As a historic house museum run by NYC Parks, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together.

In celebration of our 75th Anniversary of Gracie being a mayoral residence, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled New York 1942. This is the second in a series of installations envisioning New York through the framework of Gracie Mansion as it has been inhabited over time. It includes artwork, documents and objects from the period that the La Guardias lived in Gracie, shown together to tell a more complete story of the overall historic context as perceived from diverse perspectives.

About Free Community Rowing
The Community Rows are free sessions that include a basic introduction to rowing for first timers (safety orientation, rowing technique, and terminology) and of course plenty of actual rowing on the Hudson River. The rows take place in five-person wooden rowboats that Village Community Boathouse builds onsite. The rows last, depending on river conditions and rower level experience, between one and three hours. Most of these rows have mixed crews with those that have never been on the river before and some old hands. Visit the Village Community Boathouse's website for more information and photos!

We need your help! NYC Parks and the Fort Tryon Park Trust are conducting a public use study of Fort Tryon Park to help inform management of the park and its resources. We need volunteers to help count park visitors, observe park use patterns, and administer visitor questionnaires throughout the day on Wednesday, May 3 and Sunday, May 7.

This study will enable us to:

  • Learn how many people the park serves
  • Secure data to inform decisions about park maintenance and capital improvements
  • Identify ways to ensure the park best serves the community

This is a unique opportunity to give back to Fort Tryon Park and learn about the park’s impact! To make the study successful, we need volunteers to collect data throughout the park in 2.5-hour shifts. All volunteers will receive a special thank you gift for their participation.

Sign up for a volunteer shift!

All volunteers must be 18 years old or older.

Visit Poe Park Visitor Center for our new exhibit City Birds by Elana Amity. The exhibit will be on view at the Poe Park Visitor Center on Tuedays through Saturdays from March 4 through March 29. There will be an opening reception with a Q&A session on Saturday, March 11.

About City Birds
Raised in the Bronx, Elana Amity visited Poe Park numerous times. As a young child she roamed in and around the cottage, and as a teenager she and her friends danced while a band played in the gazebo. Edgar Allan Poe’s poem "The Raven" was brought to life by her father who loved reciting poetry. Ironically, Poe completed his final revision of "The Raven" while living on 85 Amity Street, now West Third Street, in New York’s Greenwich Village. Amity’s current work includes numerous paintings and monotypes of birds found in New York City’s parks, sidewalks, and window sills. Her birch bark paintings reflect images and textures found in natural settings. Her illustrated poems include the works of Wallace Steven, Edgar Allan Poe, William Wordsworth, and Wilfred Owen.

Artist Bio
New York City artist, Elana Amity, began her career as a teacher and freelance illustrator. She served on the board of the Society of Illustrators for many years. In 1984 she joined the faculty of LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts where she taught illustration, painting and drawing. In 2010 she opened a studio in Manhattan’s Garment District. Her paintings, drawings and prints capture both fleeting and enduring moments oflife in cities, nature and beyond. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and public spaces at home and abroad.

Hallett Nature Sanctuary is the smallest of the park's three woodland landscapes. Closed to the public in 1934, the Hallett Nature Sanctuary remained mostly untouched until 2001, when Central Park Conservancy took up a more comprehensive program of restoration and maintenance. Now, visitors can use the rustic trail to view native plantings that attract birds and other wildlife. Join our guides for this exclusive tour of the Hallett Nature Sanctuary, open to visitors only on Central Park Conservancy guided tours and during limited open hours.

The tour route involves wood-chipped trails and some hills. The tour starts and ends in front of the José Martí statue (Central Park South at Sixth Avenue)

For weather cancellation and other ticket policies, please review the Central Park Conservancy policies carefully.

Groups of seven or more must schedule a custom tour three weeks in advance at tours@centralparknyc.org.

Join us at the opening night of Other Homes at the Arsenal Gallery in Central Park!

Curated by Audra Lambert (Antecedent Projects), Other Homes is a group exhibition that considers the role of organic materials in contemporary art, specifically art that utilizes found objects and assemblage. Marina Andrij?i?-Ojeda, Jon Bunge, Katya Grokhovsky, Rachel Hornaday and Nyugen Smith each consider the effects of natural environments on contemporary art. Their works consider our intimacy with the natural environment while examining the tension created by transforming organic matter into assembled and found artworks.

Authors Nathalie Blanc and Barbara Benish present a book talk on their new work Form, Art and the Environment: Engaging in Sustainability, which adopts a pluralistic perspective of environmental artistic processes in order to examine the contributions of the arts in promoting sustainable development and culture at a grassroots level and its potential as a catalyst for social change and awareness. This book investigates how community arts, environmental creativity, and the changing role of artists in the Polis contribute to the goal of a sustainable future from a number of interdisciplinary perspectives.

Following the discussion we invite you to stay to view Other Homes an exhibit that considers the role of organic materials within the lexicon of contemporary art: specifically in contemporary found and assemblage art: specifically in contemporary found and assemblage art. Works by Marina Andrij?i?-Ojeda, Jon Bunge, Katya Grokhovsky, Rachel Hornaday and Nyugen Smith each uniquely consider the effects natural environments exert on contemporary art. These works consider our intimacy with the natural environment while examining the tension created by transforming organic matter into assembled and found artworks.

Marina Andrij?i?-Ojeda, Jon Bunge, Katya Grokhovsky, Rachel Hornaday and Nyugen Smith each consider the effects of natural environments on contemporary art.
