In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City—a place where history is made, not merely recorded.

As a historic house museum run by NYC Parks, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together.

In celebration of our 75th Anniversary of Gracie being a mayoral residence, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled New York 1942. This is the second in a series of installations envisioning New York through the framework of Gracie Mansion as it has been inhabited over time. It includes artwork, documents and objects from the period that the La Guardias lived in Gracie, shown together to tell a more complete story of the overall historic context as perceived from diverse perspectives.

Put on your boots, grab your field journal and explore Wave Hill’s woodland with an ecologist's lens. Middle schoolers will spend the week immersing themselves in nature and conducting fieldwork, all while discovering the ecological importance of urban woodlands and the wildlife that rely on them.

As part of the adventure, students will apply what they learn to an ecological restoration project that helps us conserve Wave Hill's woodland. Throughout the week, participants will use their creativity as they document their discoveries in a field journal.

Please note: This is a drop-off program for Grades 6, 7, and 8. Advanced registration is required. To register, please call (718) 549-3200 ext. 237.

The tension between mankind and Mother Nature has long been a disturbing battleground. There is a tendency to level the ground and bulldoze over anything in our way—often realizing after the fact that we built too big, too bold, and too quickly.

In “Natural Impact,” the new exhibit on view at NYC Parks’ Arsenal Gallery in Central Park, visual artists highlight the ingenuity and absurdity of this cycle through their work. Artists look at how nature sneaks back into our precisely constructed world and either softens the edges, or abruptly overwhelms them.

Curated by D. Dominick Lombardi, “Natural Impact” features a variety of mediums including painting, screenprints, and sculpture, from artists Tim Daly, Lina Puerta, Brant Moorefield, Cecilia Whittaker Doe, Dominick Rapone, and Jodie Mim Goodnough.

This exhibition is FREE and open to the public. For more information, please call (212) 360-8163.

The Bronx and La Villette are two very similar areas in the cities of New York City and Paris. Considered for a long time as dangerous areas, they are becoming very fashionable neighborhoods, where artists and families live. Their configuration has changed so much that now the two neighborhoods are literally the opposite of what they used to be.

The aim of the project The Bronx - La Villette is to give value to the work that has gone into these areas, in spite of the misconceptions people may have about them, and to highlight the diversity of these neighborhoods by showing everyday people from a local’s perspective.

Matteo Pellegrinuzzi is a photographer/cinematographer. He has been living in Paris for the past ten years, working between Paris and Italy on social issues. He studied the History of Cinema at the University of Pavia in Italy. Mr. Pellegrinuzzi has contributed to the making of many movies as a camera man and cinematographer since 2005, but photography is still his first love. His visit to the Bronx inspired this exhibition.

Obie Award-winning director Robert O’Hara (Bootycandy, The Brother/Sister Plays (Part 2) brings a warring King and his band of brothers to communities all across New York with Mobile Unit’s spring production of Henry V.

Insulted by the regent of France, Britain’s King Henry V decides to wage war and claim the throne across the Channel. But Henry’s charm only distracts the soldiers for so long before the dire stakes of their task call into question the King’s true motives and direction. Resonating across the centuries—wherever there may be a kingdom for a stage, and royalty to act—Shakespeare’s drama about invasion, ego and leadership, delves into history’s thorniest questions: What makes a person worthy of wearing the crown, and what do they owe the people they lead?

Seating is limited so please RSVP to cultureartsfun@parks.nyc.gov.

Abouit the PublicTheater Mobile Unit

The Public Theater’s Mobile Unit is a reinvention of Joseph Papp’s “Mobile Theater,” which began in 1957. Papp’s original touring company evolved into the New York Shakespeare Festival, and ultimately became The Public Theater. All of it was built on a simple idea: Culture belongs to everyone.

This idea remains at the heart of The Public Theater’s work to this day. And the Mobile Unit still takes this mission out to the communities across New York City, providing free performances to all. The Mobile Unit presents free Shakespeare to prisons, homeless shelters, and community centers throughout New York’s boroughs. Over the years, the Mobile Unit has served thousands of audiences with critically acclaimed productions. In addition to the community tour, each Mobile Unit show “sits down” at The Public Theater’s Astor Place home to perform for Public audiences and community organizations from all over the city.

For a breath of fresh air, take your workouts outdoors. Parks are becoming a logical alternative environment for those who want to add variety to their workouts, or who just don't like the gym. And, it's an affordable way to increase physical activity opportunities, because there's nothing special to build.

Exercise with a view, in natural sunlight, with green scenery all around bestows health benefits that can’t be found indoors. Scientific studies have shown that the pleasure of being outdoors for example gives your brain, psyche, and immune system an extra boost.

All of our fitness programs are free, led by trained professionals, and suitable for all levels. Wear comfortable clothing and bring water. Please check back for rain and weather/air advisory cancels.

Please note: Fitness programs are canceled if the weather is lower than 20 degrees and when there are icy conditions. Saturday morning walks begin at 8:30 a.m.

As part of the adventure, students will apply what they learn to an ecological restoration project that helps us conserve Wave Hill's woodland. Throughout the week, participants will use their creativity as they document their discoveries in a field journal.
