Calling all park lovers! This spring, the New York Junior League's Playground Improvement Project committee ("PIP") invites you to join them in rolling up your sleeves to help revitalize Corlears Hook Park!

Throughout five weekends in April and May New York Junior League volunteers and community volunteers will spend a day in the park (rain or shine) gardening, landscaping, painting, and completing other tasks to help spruce up this highly-used space. All volunteers will be provided with breakfast, lunch, and a t-shirt.

Registration
All participants (ages 16 and older) must register in advance at nyjl.org/playground. Registration closes when capacity is reached or the Wednesday prior to that weekend's park days.

About the New York Junior League Playground Improvement Project
For more than 25 years, the Playground Improvement Project (PIP) has been a New York Junior League signature community project. Our volunteers create safe, beautiful, well-organized, and educational play spaces for children and other members of the New York City community. PIP focuses on sites and parks that need major renovation and have the greatest impact on the surrounding community. Weekend cleanup days include landscaping and repairing the parks. PIP works with over 700 volunteers each season to help improve the park and make a positive impact on the community.

Please reach out to playground@nyjl.org with any questions or if you are interested in making a donation to this cause.

Bike Skills 101: Learn to Ride — Kids is a free group class for children who are ready to ditch their training wheels and ride a two-wheeler for the first time. With our safe, easy, effective method and experienced instructors, kids will learn how to balance, pedal, start, stop, and steer a bicycle. Most students get the hang of it in one session, but even if they don’t, parents will leave equipped with an easy, low-stress technique that will have their kids riding independently in no time. Questions? Email us at classes@bike.nyc.

*Parents must ensure that the bicycle fits their child and is in good working order (i.e., wheels spin freely, brakes function). The child must be able to rest his or her feet flat on the ground while sitting on the bicycle seat. Training wheels should be removed in advance and tires should be inflated until they are hard. When creating an account to register, please enter child’s name and birthdate in the “Personal Info” section.

Highlights include Eliza Tredwell’s 1820 empire-style embroidered cotton wedding dress and Sarah Ann Tredwell’s 1872 silk bridal dress made in Paris, the highest fashion of the post-Civil War bustle period. Accessories include silk wedding boots, and earrings, corsage, and headpiece of wax orange blossoms.

It is said that the Internet is making the world a smaller place, connecting people and places that were once hugely separated by many miles and mindsets. However, the world has been getting “smaller” for years — in large part due to immigration and the free flow of ideas that come with it.

Now on view at the Conference House Park visitor center and at the Biddle House in Conference House Park, this exhibit highlights narratives of important pioneers in the fields of maritime navigation and communication so people today can understand how our ancestors started making the world “smaller” slowly but surely over centuries by learning how to travel vast oceans. The exhibit also includes a selection of devices, navigational maps and prints from the Museum of Maritime Navigation and Communication (located in Rosebank, S.I.), devoted to preserving and displaying devices and equipment that were used over the years to navigate waters worldwide. This exhibit also includes a working model of a dry dock.

As part of the Wilder LIC Group Exhibition at the Windmill Community Garden, please join us for Good Vibration Acoustic Cartography Tours!
RSVP IS A MUST, as tour spots are VERY limited to 6 participants per tour.

Using his custom Mobile Listening Kits, Wilder LIC artist Johann Diedrick will be leading three Tours on Saturday May 12th, each lasting 1 hour.

The tours encourage participants to shift the way they relate to our environment through sound. With the Mobile Listening Kits, participants can tap into the least audible sounds of the Windmill Community Garden including soil movements, worms, water, and the air around us.

With the use of the Mobile Listening Kits, participants can tune in to subtle acoustic vibrations in the environment and explore the site’s cracks and surfaces. A field guide for urban listening directs aural explorers to acoustic ‘points of interest.'

Mireles connects with his subjects up close and enlarges the resulting portraits to larger-than-life scale in order to encourage viewers to intimately relate to and empathize with their fellow residents of the United States of America. This exhibition contains 86 portraits of individuals from all 50 US states plus Washington, D.C. Included also are several portraits taken in the Lower East Side neighborhood of New York City where Mireles lives and works.

This exhbition will be on view through June 30, 2018.

Village Community Boathouse is offering free Community Rowing in our fleet of Whitehall Gigs. No experience is necessary though rowing does require some physical dexterity. Community Rowing events are free sessions that include a basic introduction to rowing for first timers (safety orientation, rowing technique, and terminology) and of course plenty of actual rowing on the Hudson River. The rows take place in five-person wooden rowboats that Village Community Boathouse builds on site. The rows last, depending on river conditions and crew experience, between one and three hours.

Please arrive on-time as the crews will be assigned before 1PM. Bring extra water, a hat, and sunscreen as you will be rowing outdoors in the hot sun. Rowing is weather dependent and will be canceled for high winds, rain, or thunderstorms. All participants must sign a waiver and be able to climb a ladder.

Over the course of the 1800s, weddings in New York City evolved from intimate private ceremonies to large, lavish affairs. This exhibition explores the changes in wedding customs as the 19th century progressed, including the trousseau, printed invitations, and the giving of gifts.

Highlights include Eliza Tredwell’s 1820 empire-style embroidered cotton wedding dress and Sarah Ann Tredwell’s 1872 silk bridal dress made in Paris, the highest fashion of the post-Civil War bustle period. Accessories include silk wedding boots, and earrings, corsage, and headpiece of wax orange blossoms.

This exhibition is on view on Thursdays through Mondays (except major holidays) from May 3 to July 30. The house is open on Thursdays from noon to 8:00 p.m. and Fridays through Mondays from noon to 5:00 p.m.
