Join us at an opening reception for artist Juanli Carrion's public art installation OSS#02 Brooklyn in Fort Greene Park. Remarks will take place at 6:30 p.m. at the park entrance at Myrtle Avenue and Washington Park, followed by light refreshments in the Fort Greene Park Visitors Center.

OSS (Outer Seed Shadow) is a series of public art interventions in the form of geopolitical gardens that represent the union between plants and human interaction. Carrión revisits the enduring idea of the American “melting pot” and investigates the new realities of immigrant life in present-day New York, the most symbolic of immigrant cities. The threefold public art installation, community garden, and educational center for community discussion derives from a series of videotaped, at-home interviews conducted by Carrión with immigrants living in Brooklyn. The interviewees are asked about their personal experiences with cultural adaptation and coexistence since arriving in New York. At the end of the discussion, each interviewee selects a plant that exists in both their country of origin and the United States to be planted in the garden. The survival of the garden is dependent on its free public programs that include weekly hands-on gardening workshops organized in partnership with local organizations and institutions. For the complete schedule of programming, visit outerseedshadow.org.

OSS#02 is presented in partnership with NYC Parks. It is sponsored, in part, by the Greater New York Arts Development Fund of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs administered by Brooklyn Arts Council (BAC), The Fort Greene Park Conservancy, and Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership. BIG Reuse and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden are additional collaborators on this project.

This event is free and open to the public.

Three of William Shakespeare’s most beloved comedies are produced by the irreverent, surprising, and critically-acclaimed The Drilling Company: Much Ado About Nothing, As You Like It with music by Natalie Smith, and Measure for Measure. The plays feature the greatest, funniest and noblest women of the canon—Beatrice, Rosalind, and Isabella—remarkable characters who, with close connections to other women, master true love and overcome misogyny and sexual harassment. In addition, the anniversaries of William Shakespeare’s birth (452nd) and death (400th) are honored with a daylong celebration.

Marking Socrates Sculpture Park’s 30th anniversary this year, the institution presents Landmark, a series of artist commissions and projects that transforms the land both physically and symbolically. Once an industrial landfill and illegal dumping ground, Socrates has transformed itself into New York City’s preeminent sculpture park and social space for public art, community engagement and urban discovery. Landmark directly addresses the idea of place as intimately tied to social and ecological structures, to maintenance and stewardship, and to evolution over time.

Landmark features eight different artist projects including a newly commissioned major earthwork by Meg Webster. Additional artists in the exhibition include Abigail DeVille, Brendan Fernandes, Cary Leibowitz, Jessica Segall, Casey Tang, the curatorial collective ARTPORT_making waves, and a Broadway Billboard by Hank Willis Thomas. Since its inception in 1986, Socrates and the surrounding area of Queens, New York has rapidly changed. Whether by engaging directly with the land or commenting on the neighborhood’s cultural and economic shifts, each artwork in Landmark reflects historic transformations in the making.

City Parks Foundation offers a traveling puppet show, CityParks PuppetMobile, the oldest continually operating company of its kind in the country, which presents free performances and puppet-making workshops in neighborhood parks, recreation centers and schools throughout New York City.

The CityParks PuppetMobile presents the classic Puss in Boots tale, with a twist. Once upon a time there lived a young man named Ferguson Mundingle. Fergus has just the bare essentials in life – a roof over his head, the clothes on his back, and his ever faithful pet cat. One day when lamenting his poor lifestyle, Fergus is astounded when his cat stands up, begins talking and introduces himself as Puss. Puss reveals to Fergus that he is very intelligent and well traveled, and even has an idea to help Fergus improve his situation. With that in mind, Puss dons a snazzy pair of boots and sets off on an exciting magical journey. Despite his reputation as a sly trickster, Puss soon proves himself a caring friend to all, willing to help at any cost!

Presented by WNET and Indie Lens Pop Up

Join us for a preview screening of the documentary T-Rex by Zack Canepari and Drea Cooper. Seventeen-year-old Claressa "T-Rex" Shields came from the streets of Flint to reach the Gold Medal podium in London in 2012, the first time women were allowed to box in the Olympics, but as we see in this coming-of-age story, life outside the ring may be an even tougher fight.

After the screening there will be a Q & A with the producer of 'T-Rex', Sue Jaye Johnson, and NYC Parks boxing teacher Colleen Flood.

Sue Jaye Johnson is a documentary artist working in radio, photography, film and interactive technologies. A two-time Peabody Award winner, Johnson's work frequently looks at the role of women in society. Recently, she spearheaded an unprecedented collaboration between The New York Times, NPR, and WNYC to tell the story of the first women to box in the Olympic games. The series included the radio diary of the then unknown teenage boxer Claressa "T-Rex" Shields. Claressa’s diary, which aired on NPR’s "All Things Considered" in 2012, led her to work on a feature documentary about Claressa's journey from Flint, Michigan to the top of the podium in London. T-Rex premiered at SXSW in 2015 and will be on PBS's Independent Lens in August 2016.

Colleen Flood teaches Power Punch at the Tony Dapolito Recreation Center. Colleen started boxing in 2003 and started competing in 2005 on an amateur level. She competed in numerous competitions in New Jersey, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania, such as Challenge of Champions, Battle at the Pier, and Fight Night NJ.

Three of William Shakespeare’s most beloved comedies are produced by the irreverent, surprising, and critically acclaimed The Drilling Company: Much Ado About Nothing, As You Like It with music by Natalie Smith, and Measure for Measure. The plays feature the greatest, funniest, and noblest women of the canon—Beatrice, Rosalind, and Isabella—remarkable characters who, with close connections to other women, master true love and overcome misogyny and sexual harassment.

Directed by Taylor Hackford, this biopic profiles the life of legendary musician Ray Charles. Despite humble beginnings and the loss of his eyesight due to glaucoma at the age of six, Charles, depicted by Jamie Foxx, would nonetheless become an icon in both the music industry and the civil rights era. While the film delves into his problems with drugs and women, the bulk of the story details his career. Rated PG-13.
