City Parks Foundation offers a traveling puppet show, CityParks PuppetMobile, the oldest continually operating company of its kind in the country, which presents free performances and puppet-making workshops in neighborhood parks, recreation centers and schools throughout New York City.

The CityParks PuppetMobile presents the classic Puss in Boots tale, with a twist. Once upon a time there lived a young man named Ferguson Mundingle. Fergus has just the bare essentials in life – a roof over his head, the clothes on his back, and his ever faithful pet cat. One day when lamenting his poor lifestyle, Fergus is astounded when his cat stands up, begins talking and introduces himself as Puss. Puss reveals to Fergus that he is very intelligent and well traveled, and even has an idea to help Fergus improve his situation. With that in mind, Puss dons a snazzy pair of boots and sets off on an exciting magical journey. Despite his reputation as a sly trickster, Puss soon proves himself a caring friend to all, willing to help at any cost!

Wave Hill joins this live, free musical celebration across New York City’s five boroughs with Inside the Bird Chorus, a project conceived by the philosopher and artist David Rothenberg as a dialogue between improvising musicians and indigenous bird populations of New York City. For Make Music New York, gardens across the five boroughs are participating in the project.

At Wave Hill, the flutist Michael Pestel improvises with the local bird population. Pestel has built multi-media installations and performed on flutes, contr’alto clarinet, piano, diverse hybrid, and invented instruments, such as the Birdmachine and Birdrawingtable, in concert halls, art galleries, city streets, parks, aviaries, and natural places throughout the United States, Europe, Japan, and Australia. He is the recipient of artist grants and awards from the NEA, Mondrian Foundation, German Ministry of Culture, Asian Cultural Council, American Institute of Architects, and the Pennsylvania and New York State Councils on the Arts. He is visiting lecturer at Wesleyan University and a Senior Scholar at Chatham College. Other Make Music New York locations participating in Inside the Bird Chorus are Central Park (Manhattan), Brooklyn Botanic Gardens (Brooklyn), Jamaica Wildlife Refuge (Queens), and Fresh Kills Park (Staten Island).

Marking Socrates Sculpture Park’s 30th anniversary this year, the institution presents Landmark, a series of artist commissions and projects that transforms the land both physically and symbolically. Once an industrial landfill and illegal dumping ground, Socrates has transformed itself into New York City’s preeminent sculpture park and social space for public art, community engagement and urban discovery. Landmark directly addresses the idea of place as intimately tied to social and ecological structures, to maintenance and stewardship, and to evolution over time.

Landmark features eight different artist projects including a newly commissioned major earthwork by Meg Webster. Additional artists in the exhibition include Abigail DeVille, Brendan Fernandes, Cary Leibowitz, Jessica Segall, Casey Tang, the curatorial collective ARTPORT_making waves, and a Broadway Billboard by Hank Willis Thomas. Since its inception in 1986, Socrates and the surrounding area of Queens, New York has rapidly changed. Whether by engaging directly with the land or commenting on the neighborhood’s cultural and economic shifts, each artwork in Landmark reflects historic transformations in the making.

In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City—a place where history is made, not merely recorded.

As a historic house museum run by NYC Parks, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together. In keeping with that theme, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled Windows on the City: Looking Out at Gracie’s New York. The installation consists of previously and newly acquired works, all from the original Gracie Mansion period, which have been curated to create a more historically accurate picture of life in New York City during the time of Gracie Mansion’s construction.

To RSVP for tour, please visit on.nyc.gov/gracietour.

Join Wave Hill’s Curatorial Fellow for a tour of current exhibitions.

In the main gallery, (Not So) Still Life presents novel ways that contemporary artists are transforming the still-life genre to engage with current culture. As a subject, the still life has remained popular since the early Renaissance, featuring compositions of natural and inanimate objects often presented with allegorical connotations. Today, artists are creating new variations by working in photography and sculpture to conflate interior space with landscape, or by using video and animation to convey still life in motion. Artists include Adam Brent, Elizabeth Bryant, Nicole Cohen, Ori Gersht, Jessica Jackson Hutchins, Sue Johnson, Laura Letinsky, Beth Lipman, Erin O’Keefe,Donna Sharrett, Nicolas Touron, Michael Vahrenwald, Rodrigo Valenzuela, and Alex Verhaest. In the Sunroom Project Space, art collective Dark Matters (Aimée Burg, Frank De León-Jones, and Anna Ritsch) create an interactive site for contemplating the invisible energy that fills the universe. Visitors may concoct their own wishes using materials available at stations throughout the space.

This tour is free with admission to the grounds.

Currently, Gracie Mansion is not offering group tours. If you are part of a private organization that would like to tour the house, please email your request, including the size of group, your name and the purpose of a tour, to gracieinfo@cityhall.nyc.gov and we will work to add you to one of the currently scheduled tours.

Photo ID required for entrance. No photography permitted in the interior. At the present time, tours are available in English only. Please plan to arrive at least five minutes in advance.

Though born in Baltimore, longtime New Yorker Philip Glass is known one of the city’s iconic musical figures. He will help Make Music New York usher in its second decade by playing from his Etudes for piano at Pier I in Riverside Park, along with nineteen students from New York City public schools, starting at 5:00 p.m.

Glass wrote the Etudes over an extended period (twenty years), originally starting the project to develop his own skills as a pianist. These lovely pieces will form the perfect backdrop to a beautiful twilight in Riverside Park.

Make Music New York, dubbed “the largest music event ever to grace Gotham” (Metro New York), celebrates its 10th year with a cornucopia of free, outdoor public concerts all around the city on Tuesday, June 21, the first day of summer. Since the festival first began in 2007, Make Music New York has become an indispensable part of the city’s cultural life, offering a dazzling array of events in all five boroughs. Wrote Russell Platt of The New Yorker, “...this project has overrun the city with song and sound on the first day of summer, brimming with more than twelve hundred concerts in all imaginable genres.”

Who was the Irish Bridget? What relevance does her story have to the history of Irish immigration to America? Learn the answers to these questions in Margaret Lynch-Brennan’s presentation “The Irish Bridget: Irish Immigrant Women in Domestic Service in America, 1840-1930” which is based on her book of the same name. Lynch-Brennan will use photographs and personal letters the Irish Bridgets wrote to one another to give insight into the lives of these young immigrant girls. She will discuss their work life, their social life, the impact they had on Irish-American life, and their contribution to American ethnic history, labor history and women’s history. Lynch-Brennan will also explore the relevance of the Irish Bridget’s story to contemporary American life, in which domestic service is again populated by female immigrants, and immigration is once more controversial.

How do birds talk to each other? What do you think they say? Listen to books about owls and their birdy friends as they twitter and tweet through the trees. Join us as we read Birdsong by Audrey Wood, Hook by Ed Young, and Raven: A Trickster Tale from the Pacific Northwest by Gerald McDermott.

Programs are held outdoors but move into Wave Hill House in inclement weather. Ideal for children ages three to six with an adult.

This program is free with admission to the grounds.

Capoeira is a unique Brazilian art form that has evolved over centuries into an exciting combination of martial arts, dance, music, and acrobatics. Some of capoeira’s benefits include strength, flexibility, stamina, overall fitness, and confidence. Benefits of capoeira for kids include promoting social interaction and sense of belonging, building confidence, discipline and self esteem, promoting a healthy lifestyle so children become active and healthy, and develop cultural awareness and tolerance. Wear comfortable clothing.

Capoeira was developed in Brazil, but its history extends to Africa and tribes from Angola. Slaves living on Brazilian Plantations who weren’t allowed to openly practice traditional forms of self-defense developed an ingenious method of disguising their training by combining it with dance-like movements, singing, and the rhythms of primitive instruments.
