Learn how to make a little compost go a long way! We’ll introduce you to the many easy ways to support soil life and plant health with compost. Spring is a great time to jump start soil activity with an injection of microorganisms that build soil structure and convert locked soil nutrients into plant-accessible food. You will walk away confident in your ability to make and apply a simple compost extract solution with just a handful of compost.

Registration is requested

The NYC Compost Project, created by the NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY) in 1993, works to rebuild NYC’s soils by providing New Yorkers with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities they need to make and use compost locally. NYC Compost Project programs are implemented by DSNY-funded teams at seven host organizations, including Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Big Reuse, Earth Matter NY, Lower East Side Ecology Center, Queens Botanical Garden, Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden, and The New York Botanical Garden. It is said that the Internet is making the world a smaller place, connecting people and places that were once hugely separated by many miles and mindsets. However, the world has been getting “smaller” for years — in large part due to immigration and the free flow of ideas that come with it.

Now on view at the Conference House Park visitor center and at the Biddle House in Conference House Park, this exhibit highlights narratives of important pioneers in the fields of maritime navigation and communication so people today can understand how our ancestors started making the world “smaller” slowly but surely over centuries by learning how to travel vast oceans. The exhibit also includes a selection of devices, navigational maps and prints from the Museum of Maritime Navigation and Communication (located in Rosebank, S.I.), devoted to preserving and displaying devices and equipment that were used over the years to navigate waters worldwide. This exhibit also includes a working model of a dry dock.

Obie Award-winning director Robert O’Hara (Bootycandy, The Brother/Sister Plays (Part 2) brings a warring king and his band of brothers to communities all across New York with Mobile Unit’s spring production of Henry V.

Insulted by the regent of France, Britain’s King Henry V decides to wage war and claim the throne across the Channel. But Henry’s charm only distracts the soldiers for so long before the dire stakes of their task call into question the King’s true motives and direction. Resonating across the centuries—wherever there may be a kingdom for a stage, and royalty to act—Shakespeare’s drama about invasion, ego and leadership, delves into history’s thorniest questions: What makes a person worthy of wearing the crown, and what do they owe the people they lead?

Calling all park lovers! This spring, the New York Junior League's Playground Improvement Project committee ("PIP") invites you to join them in rolling up your sleeves to help revitalize Corlears Hook Park!

Throughout five weekends in April and May New York Junior League volunteers and community volunteers will spend a day in the park (rain or shine) gardening, landscaping, painting, and completing other tasks to help spruce up this highly-used space. All volunteers will be provided with breakfast, lunch, and a t-shirt.

Registration
All participants (ages 16 and older) must register in advance at nyjl.org/playground. Registration closes when capacity is reached or the Wednesday prior to that weekend's park days.

About the New York Junior League Playground Improvement Project
For more than 25 years, the Playground Improvement Project (PIP) has been a New York Junior League signature community project. Our volunteers create safe, beautiful, well-organized, and educational play spaces for children and other members of the New York City community. PIP focuses on sites and parks that need major renovation and have the greatest impact on the surrounding community. Weekend cleanup days include landscaping and repairing the parks. PIP works with over 700 volunteers each season to help improve the park and make a positive impact on the community.

Please reach out to playground@nyjl.org with any questions or if you are interested in making a donation to this cause.

Speakers: Michelle Young & Augustin Pasquet, Untapped Cities

Every borough has its secrets, and Brooklyn boasts some of the most unusual of them all. Untapped Cities’ Michelle Young and Augustin Pasquet have gathered these mysterious locals and legendary spaces into Secret Brooklyn: An Unusual Guide to shed light on these hidden histories.

On this talk by the authors at the Lott House, you'll discover secret museums, learn how to go on an urban safari for wild parrots, discover a performance of robots in a church, find out how to touch the oldest subway tunnel in the world and the world’s smallest Torah. The book features over 125 locations in Brooklyn, ranging from the secret, to historically fascinating, to the modern-day marvels, including the dramatic Newtown Creek Digester Eggs.

Twisted from Constantly Watching Doves is a work inspired by imagery from fairy tales collected by Franz Xaver Von Schönwerth, as well as the childhood and daily life experiences of the artists. As a duet for Zack Fuller, a former member of Min Tanaka’s Tokason Butoh Group, and dancer/choreographer/welder/visual artist Emily Smith, it presents two figures on a journey; undergoing a series of transformations that are alternately disturbing, poetic, funny, violent, and sentimental.

These conservatory-trained performer-composers shine with precision, soul, and a raw energy that audiences adore. The ensemble has appeared at venues including Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, the Stuttgart Jazz Fest and the Beijing Music Festival. Its members are Fung Chern Hwei and Gregor Huebner, violins; Ron Lawrence, viola; and Jeremy Harman, cello.

Now, visitors can use the rustic trail to view native plantings that attract birds and other wildlife. The tension between mankind and Mother Nature has long been a disturbing battleground. There is a tendency to level the ground and bulldoze over anything in our way—often realizing after the fact that we built too big, too bold, and too quickly.

In “Natural Impact,” the new exhibit on view at NYC Parks’ Arsenal Gallery in Central Park, visual artists highlight the ingenuity and absurdity of this cycle through their work. Artists look at how nature sneaks back into our precisely constructed world and either softens the edges, or abruptly overwhelms them.

Curated by D. Dominick Lombardi, “Natural Impact” features a variety of mediums including painting, screenprints, and sculpture, from artists Tim Daly, Lina Puerta, Brant Moorefield, Cecilia Whittaker Doe, Dominick Rapone, and Jodie Mim Goodnough.

This exhibition is FREE and open to the public. For more information, please call (212) 360-8163.

In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City—a place where history is made, not merely recorded.

As a historic house museum run by NYC Parks, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together.

In celebration of our 75th Anniversary of Gracie being a mayoral residence, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled New York 1942. This is the second in a series of installations envisioning New York through the framework of Gracie Mansion as it has been inhabited over time. It includes artwork, documents and objects from the period that the La Guardias lived in Gracie, shown together to tell a more complete story of the overall historic context as perceived from diverse perspectives.

The Bronx and La Villette are two very similar areas in the cities of New York City and Paris. Considered for a long time as dangerous areas, they are becoming very fashionable neighborhoods, where artists and families live. Their configuration has changed so much that now the two neighborhoods are literally the opposite of what they used to be.

The aim of the project The Bronx - La Villette is to give value to the work that has gone into these areas, in spite of the misconceptions people may have about them, and to highlight the diversity of these neighborhoods by showing everyday people from a local’s perspective.

Matteo Pellegrinuzzi is a photographer/cinematographer. He has been living in Paris for the past ten years, working between Paris and Italy on social issues. He studied the History of Cinema at the University of Pavia in Italy. Mr. Pellegrinuzzi has contributed to the making of many movies as a camera man and cinematographer since 2005, but photography is still his first love. His visit to the Bronx inspired this exhibition.
