Curated by Audra Lambert (Antecedent Projects), Other Homes is a group exhibition that considers the role of organic materials in contemporary art, specifically art that utilizes found objects and assemblage. Marina Andrij?i?-Ojeda, Jon Bunge, Katya Grokhovsky, Rachel Hornaday and Nyugen Smith each consider the effects of natural environments on contemporary art. Their works consider our intimacy with the natural environment while examining the tension created by transforming organic matter into assembled and found artworks.

Adam Stoltman, NYC Urban Field Station artist-in-residence, photographer, and former staff editor at the New York Times, will present and speak about his 18 month long photography project: Parks & People.

New York City’s public park system is one of the most diverse and complex urban places in the world, occupying nearly 30,000 acres and serving over 8 million residents and visitors. Within this landscape there are thousands of natural areas, places where nature is being restored to serve an extremely diverse series of communities and constituencies across the five boroughs. These areas are as much social places as they are natural spaces, and it is this interplay that Adam seeks to make visible through this photographic work.

Adam will be joined in conversation by US Forest Service Research Social Scientists, Lindsay Campbell and Erika Svendsen and Bram Gunther, co-director of the New York City Urban Field Station and co-founder of the Natural Areas Conservancy. The discussion will be framed around themes of
democratic and secular sacred space within a time of urban ecological restoration. The discussants will offer reflections on different aspects of the urban parks movement inspired by the imagery and relate Adam’s project to a city-wide effort to assess the social and ecological value of New York City’s natural areas.

Join us for a performance by artists Katya Grokhovsky and Nyugen Smith at the Arsenal Gallery in Central Park!

Katya Grokhovsky and Nyugen Smith are two of the five artists participating in the group exhibition Other Homes at the Arsenal Gallery. Both interdisciplinary artists will present 15- to 20-minute immersive performances around themes explored in the show.

Curated by Audra Lambert (Antecedent Projects), Other Homes considers the role of organic materials in contemporary art, specifically art that utilizes found objects and assemblage. Marina Andrijcic-Ojeda, Jon Bunge, Grokhovsky, Rachel Hornaday, and Nygugen Smith each consider the effects of natural environments on contemporary art. Their works consider our intimacy with the natural environment while examining the tension created by transforming organic matter into assembled and found artworks.

For the first time, Poe Park Visitor Center is highlighting artwork created by NYC Parks youth through an art festival. This three-week art festival will include a variety of artwork created, from September of 2016 through April of 2017, by children who attend NYC Parks youth programming at recreation centers throughout the five boroughs.

Artist and Recreation Specialist Laura Alvarez created monthly curriculums, which were implemented by the recreation team throughout the year. Each lesson plan was based on a famous artist’s work, allowing for cohesion in the exhibit, while also allowing the children to use various styles of art in their own work.

About Poe Park Visitor Center

About Summer Camp Activities

Key curriculum includes:

For children ages 10 to 14:

Remote Control Servo
In this project, we will use the Arduino to examine and decode signals from a remote control, and then use them to control a robot you build.

E-Textiles
Have you ever seen clothing with built-in lights? This may sound like something out of a science fiction movie, electronic textiles or E-textiles really exist. In this project, you will build a light-up dance glove to put on your own light show at our culminating event.

For children ages 6 to 9:

Light Tracking Robot
Sometimes engineers get ideas to build robots from animals in nature. There are robot dogs, robot snakes, robot birds, robot cheetahs, and even tiny robotic insects! In this science project, you will build a robot insect of your own. The robot will automatically drive toward a light source, mimicking a behavior called phototaxis, seen in some insects.

LED Bracelet with Iconic Imagery
Design an LED bracelet with your favorite iconic imagery. In this project, you will explore the intersection of art and technology through printmaking and circuitry. Choose from templates of your favorite super heroes, sports teams and even buildings. Understand the basics of circuitry so that you may take you art work to the next level and develop your knowledge of the engineer–design process.

The Poe Park Visitor Center, a gallery space in the Bronx, offers free dynamic arts and cultural programming from theatrical performances and
concerts to fitness classes and recreational activities. The center hosts rotating art exhibitions, and welcomes visual, literary, and performance
artists from around the city to present workshops to the public.

The Poe Park Visitor Center, a gallery space in the Bronx, offers free dynamic arts and cultural programming from theatrical performances and
concerts to fitness classes and recreational activities. The center hosts rotating art exhibitions, and welcomes visual, literary, and performance
artists from around the city to present workshops to the public.
