Over the course of the 1800s, weddings in New York City evolved from intimate private ceremonies to large, lavish affairs. This exhibition explores the changes in wedding customs as the 19th century progressed, including the trousseau, printed invitations, and the giving of gifts.

Highlights include Eliza Tredwell’s 1820 empire-style embroidered cotton wedding dress and Sarah Ann Tredwell’s 1872 silk bridal dress made in Paris, the highest fashion of the post-Civil War bustle period. Accessories include silk wedding boots, and earrings, corsage, and headpiece of wax orange blossoms.

This exhibition is on view on Thursdays through Mondays (except major holidays) from May 3 to July 30. The house is open on Thursdays from noon to 8:00 p.m. and Fridays through Mondays from noon to 5:00 p.m.

Join us for a journey back in time to the elite ‘Bond Street area’, home to Astors, Vanderbilts, Delanos – and the Tredwells, who lived in the Merchant’s House. You’ll see how the neighborhood surrounding the Tredwells’ home evolved from a refined and tranquil residential enclave into a busy commercial center. Visit important 19th-century landmark buildings on this tour through 21st century NoHo.

And what’s a plunge into the past without a little scandal? On the bustling Astor Place, imagine the drama of events that led to the Opera House riot of 1849, among the bloodiest in American history. In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City—a place where history is made, not merely recorded.

As a historic house museum run by NYC Parks, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together.

In celebration of our 75th Anniversary of Gracie being a mayoral residence, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled New York 1942. This is the second in a series of installations envisioning New York through the framework of Gracie Mansion as it has been inhabited over time. It includes artwork, documents and objects from the period that the La Guardias lived in Gracie, shown together to tell a more complete story of the overall historic context as perceived from diverse perspectives.

Join the Stewardship Team for an evening of horseshoe crab monitoring!

Since 2013, NYC Parks has been monitoring horseshoe crab spawning activity. We'll walk the beach to count the number of crabs present and tag them to keep track of how many we've already seen as part of NYC Parks' ongoing effort to monitor their activity. This exciting work contributes to a long-term research study that is helping us to better understand and protect the horseshoe crabs that live in our urban waters.

Come to Fort Tryon Park and try something new. Join us on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday mornings for one hour of walking, stretching, and strengthening exercises.

For a breath of fresh air, take your workouts outdoors. Parks are becoming a logical alternative environment for those who want to add variety to their workouts, or who just don't like the gym. And, it's an affordable way to increase physical activity opportunities, because there's nothing special to build.

Exercise with a view, in natural sunlight, with green scenery all around bestows health benefits that can’t be found indoors. Scientific studies have shown that the pleasure of being outdoors for example gives your brain, psyche, and immune system an extra boost.

All of our fitness programs are free, led by trained professionals, and suitable for all levels. Wear comfortable clothing and bring water. Please check back for rain and weather/air advisory cancels.

Please note: Fitness programs are canceled if the weather is lower than 20 degrees and when there are icy conditions. Saturday morning walks begin at 8:30 a.m.

Do you want to make a difference in your community and support or care for a park near you? At Partnerships for Parks, we help people, organizations, and government work together to support NYC parks, gardens, trees, and other green spaces.

At this introductory workshop, learn how you and your neighbors can come together to support and improve your community green spaces!

Topics will include:

  • Why volunteers are so important for vibrant, thriving parks
  • Who you need to know in NYC Parks
  • How neighbors, coworkers, or community groups can spruce up a park with an “It’s My Park” project
  • Ways to join together with neighbors who also care about your park
  • Which resources are available to help you

Featured speakers include:

  • Joe Block, Deputy Administrator, NYC Parks

As a Deputy Administrator, Joe is responsible for managing and overseeing the operations, inspections, and maintenance of Forest and Highland Park. Prior to his current role he managed Queens District’s 11 & 13 and was previously an Outreach Coordinator for Partnerships for Parks.

  • Sabina Saragoussi, Director, Partnerships for Parks

A Brooklyn native, Sabina Saragoussi has devoted her career to creating a more livable and equitable New York City for over a decade. Since 2013, she has served as Director of Partnerships for Parks, managing the program's multi-million dollar budget, overseeing the implementation of PfP's programs, and guiding strategic planning and fundraising. She is dedicated to the transformation of NYC green spaces, and her favorite work brings her out to meet the many people making an impact on their parks and neighborhoods.

  • Stefanie Gutierrez, Senior Outreach Coordinator, Partnerships for Parks

Stefanie first started her career with NYC Parks as an Urban Park Ranger, connecting New Yorkers to the natural world through environmental education, outdoor recreation, wildlife management, and active conservation. She continues to educate and inform communities as an Outreach Coordinator in Staten Island. Stefanie acts as the first point of contact for park groups & volunteers in her districts’ areas – helping them connect to the appropriate people and resources to transform their green spaces.

  • Roxanne Delgado, Leader, Friends of Pelham Parkway

Formed in 2017, Friends of Pelham Parkway is an all volunteer community group that supports the parkway through monthly cleanups and tabling to educate and encourage all users to appreciate and care for the park. Just recently, the group received a grant and raised funds to put up an outdoor bulletin board and develop a community rose garden. In March 2018, Partnerships for Parks recognized Friends of Pelham Parkway’s outstanding efforts at the annual It’s My Park Awards. Several local newspapers and media outlets have also highlighted the groups’ events and advocacy.

Meet staff members that can help you get started, network with other interested community members, and hear from experienced volunteers who are already doing amazing work in their parks.

Please note: This workshop is recommended for people who have been working with their parks for less than one year.

Please register here if you would like to attend.
