In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City—a place where history is made, not merely recorded.

As a historic house museum run by NYC Parks, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together.

In celebration of our 75th Anniversary of Gracie being a mayoral residence, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled New York 1942. This is the second in a series of installations envisioning New York through the framework of Gracie Mansion as it has been inhabited over time. It includes artwork, documents and objects from the period that the La Guardias lived in Gracie, shown together to tell a more complete story of the overall historic context as perceived from diverse perspectives.

In this lecture, Paul Gunther, Gracie Mansion Conservancy Executive Director, will explore the Mansion’s evolution architecturally, culturally, and politically in its first 219 years, focusing on the past 76 years that it has served as the official residence of New York City’s Mayor. Introducing Mr. Gunther will be NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver, FAICP.

In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a sleepy, scenic bend in the East River. Over 140 years later, after many shifts in ownership and use, Robert Moses convinced City authorities to designate the house as the official residence of the Mayor. In 1942, Fiorello La Guardia moved in and labeled it "The Little White House," a function it has maintained ever since, except for the last nonresident Mayor, who renewed its dual identity as "The People’s House," open to all and imparting lessons in history and civic engagement. To mark 75 years as the mayoral residence, last year a special exhibition entitled New York 1942 was installed in the Mansion that recalls the tumultuous time of the residence’s transition into that role, which Mr. Gunther will explore in his presentation.

Gracie Mansion is also significant in the history of the Historic House Trust of New York City (HHT). It was at the Mansion that Mayor Koch and Parks Commissioner Stern gathered with preservationists, historians, architects, and others to announce the creation of HHT 29 years ago. HHT is a non-profit organization, operating in tandem with NYC Parks, that provides essential support for 23 houses of architectural and cultural significance, including Gracie Mansion.

This lecture is sponsored by the Gracie Mansion Conservancy in partnership with the Historic House Trust.

Her talk is all about how to prepare, plant, maintain and harvest buckets of flowers from your garden—from March to November—with her best sowing and growing techniques. Raven has written for The Saturday Telegraph, Country Living, Gardens Illustrated, The English Garden and more. Wave Hill’s annual horticultural lecture series is held at the New York School of Interior Design.

The final lecture of the series takes place on March 21, when Timothy Young focuses on the archival legacies of several 20th-century writers and artists who built gardens.

“Icons in their Own Right”, an art installation by Makeba "KEEBS" Rainey, seeks to remedy historic erasure, champion cultural representation, and reinforce identity and pride.

Makeba’s artistry is heavily influenced by hip-hop culture and Black consciousness. She carefully chooses each photograph of her characters to reflect a demeanor of confidence and power. She then selects an African-themed design that best contextualizes each figure’s attitude, creating an a exchange of multiple layers and emotions. We hope visitors will be inspired, among others, by President Obama resting in his power, Grace Jones posing confidently, Solange’s exhibiting quiet strength, and Langston Hughes looking casually amused. These are meant to be faces of mastery, intrigue, and calm, culminating in a rainbow of Black excellence that resonates with every walk of life.

This exhibit will be on view at the Old Stone House at Washington Park on Fridays from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., or by appointment.

About the Artist
Makeba “KEEBS” Rainey is a Harlem native inspired by her community and fellow emerging visual and performance artists. She is the founder of Black Capital Coalition (BCC), which promotes both visual and performance artists through creative collaborations between artists, businesses, and cultural institutions.

Co- Curated by Monica O. Montgomery, Museum of Impact and Katherine Gressel, Old Stone House & Washington Park.

Join us for a rare, off-hours tour of Merchant’s House.

We’ll gather in the 1850s kitchen for coffee and a focused overview of the landmark Merchant’s House and its intact collection of more than 3,000 objects owned by the Tredwell family! We’ll then tour the house, including the rarely-seen bedrooms on the third floor (now staff offices), even peek up into the attic and open locked doors … and more.

You’ll gain new insight and perspectives on this unique insider’s tour, and explore in detail the architecture of Antebellum New York. Learn how to differentiate between styles, and learn tips on the fine points of what to look for on your own explorations. We’ll also examine the 1832 Merchant’s House in depth, one of only 117 buildings designated both an interior and exterior landmark in New York, including details of the ornamental plaster, considered the finest surviving from the period and several spaces not normally seen by the regular Museum visitor.

At Stop ‘N’ Swaps, New Yorkers bring items they no longer need and find things that are new to them. Stop 'N' Swaps encourage reuse, build community, and reduce the waste NYC sends to landfills.

GrowNYC invites you to bring clean, reusable, gently-used portable items such as clothing, housewares, games, books, and toys that you no longer need, and take home something new to you, free! You don’t have to bring something to take something. The only things they don’t take are large items/furniture.

Become a Volunteer

Help GrowNYC create an event where people find things they need and reduce waste! By volunteering, you will create an opportunity for people to bring things they no longer need instead of throwing them away, and find things they do want without manufacturing, packaging, or transportation.

As a volunteer you will help receive, sort, and display the gently-used items that people bring. You might also help keep areas neat, take pictures, or help promote some of the other great work GrowNYC's Zero Waste Program does!

You must be at leat 18 years old to volunteer. If you're interested in becoming a volunteer, please email ymihojevich@grownyc.org or create a volunteer profile via this link . Search for the Stop ‘N’ Swap of your interest and register to volunteer.

It is said that the Internet is making the world a smaller place, connecting people and places that were once hugely separated by many miles and mindsets. However, the world has been getting “smaller” for years — in large part due to immigration and the free flow of ideas that come with it.

Now on view at the Conference House Park visitor center and at the Biddle House in Conference House Park, this exhibit highlights narratives of important pioneers in the fields of maritime navigation and communication so people today can understand how our ancestors started making the world “smaller” slowly but surely over centuries by learning how to travel vast oceans. The exhibit also includes a selection of devices, navigational maps and prints from the Museum of Maritime Navigation and Communication (located in Rosebank, S.I.), devoted to preserving and displaying devices and equipment that were used over the years to navigate waters worldwide. This exhibit also includes a working model of a dry dock.

We'll move beyond prejudiced confines and stereotypes pertaining to sexual orientation, gender, politics, religion, and cultural identity toward a multi-ethnic and cross-cultural approach to memoir writing as a visual and written narrative, as a dynamic record of our ancestry, and as a catalyst for personal transformation. This is a multi-disciplinary approach to deconstructing and reconstructing identiy based on our own personal narratives.

We'll explore who we are through our past and present by engaging in the creation of oral narratives, which will be recorded, memoir essays, fictional memoirs, photography, and collage.

Participants will bring cameras or camera phones, family photos, recollections of songs they like, and cutouts that speak to them because of color, texture, memories, nostalgia or simply subliminal identification. Come prepared to move around and participate.
