Randall's Island has a rich, unique and varied history. RIPA’s staff loves nothing more than to share this fascinating history with interested visitors. Two colossal bridges, both the largest of their kind when completed, span the island, which was once three separate land masses; these were combined by Robert Moses through landfill in the mid-1900s. Come learn more about the man, the bridges, and the history of the Island and the park it became.

Roberta ends up losing her memory and convinces herself that she's the elusive, adventurous Susan. Soon, Roberta finds herself being romanced by a handsome young man, and pursued separately by her husband, Jim, Susan, and a murderous mobster.

A scrawny rat named Remy (voice of Patton Oswalt) finds his dreams of culinary superstardom stirring up sizable controversy in the kitchen of a fine French restaurant in director Brad Bird's madcap computer-animated comedy. It's hard being a rat with culinary aspirations, but Remy is convinced he has what it takes to break the stereotypes and follow in the footsteps of star chef Auguste Gusteau (voice of Brad Garrett). As fate would have it, Remy is currently situated in the sewers directly beneath Gusteau's elegant restaurant. Soon Remy teams up with a young chef with little talent named Linguini (voice of Lou Romano). Together they are able to create some fabulous dishes, but they live in fear that someone will discover their secret and object strenuously to a rat being in a kitchen. When Remy's passion for cooking turns the haughty world of French cuisine upside down, the rat who would be king of the kitchen learns important lessons about life, friends, and family while questioning whether he should pursue his culinary calling or simply go back underground and return to his life as a sewer rat.

Harlem community gardeners invite the public to tour Harlem's amazing grassroots green oases.

Visit opulent gardens and urban farms, growing unique vegetables, fields of pollen-rich wild flowers, and native plants, herbs, fruit, peanuts, and cotton. There are gazebos, hoop houses, hydroponic growing systems, grape arbors, ponds, highly-developed composting systems and more in this sampling of Harlem's Community Gardens.

The event will kick off at 9:00 a.m. with breakfast with a sumptuous breakfast at the J.D. Wilson Garden on 122nd Street, and end at 5:00 p.m. with a traditional Harlem cook out at the William A. Harris Garden at 153rd Street and St. Nicholas Avenue. The tour will cover more than fifteen of Harlem's incredible green gems.

Some gardens began over 30 years ago, transforming sun-parched and rubble-strewn abandoned city lots into lush gardens. Newer gardens abound where neighbors have recently come together to reclaim wasting lots.

Attendees are encouraged to bicycle or walk the tour; however, thanks to Greenthumb and NYC Parks, buses will transport folks who cannot walk or use alternative transportation. In addition to buses provided by Greenthumb and the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation, Philipp Rassman, a gardener at the Morris-Jumel Garden on West 162nd Street, will head up the Bicycle Brigade of tourists. Eren Gibson of the Truce/McCracken Garden on 118th Street and St Nicholas will lead the brave-soled walkers.

Sponsors for the event include Greenthumb and NYC Parks, Harlem Gardens, Partnership for Parks, The William A. Harris Garden, NYCCGC (The NYC Community Garden Coalition), and Project Harmony, Inc.

This photo exhibit is the result of a "people to people" cultural exchange in which the artist participated last October. The artist and group visited Havana, Cienfuegos, and Trinidad. Music and art were everywhere and the crumbling Spanish architecture made for some interesting images. The various images convey his impressions of Cuba and the Cuban people in an apolitical manner. The recent presidential visit and talk of lifting the embargo lend context to the images.

The Hattie Carthan Community Farmers’ Market is opening for its eighth season of healthy food, activities, education, and food justice programming.

This year, the market will continue to grow its youth program in order to employ, educate, and empower local teenagers through the Hattie Carthan Urban Agriculture Youth Corps. We have also worked feverishly to improve the environment and delivery of services to market shoppers through strategic improvements in the physical infrastructure and by partnering with The Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation to increase our local visibility and foot traffic in the markets. That partnership will offer us additional market days at sister market sites in the immediate community, and to host several cultural festivals in the market and garden, author readings in the childrens garden, bike tours which complement our natural programming, and increase advertising and promotions of both markets.

The Large Market will continue its Healthy Gains through Baking with Whole Grains at the newly-improved cooking island area in September; offer eggs and herbs for sale from the Hattie Carthan chicken coops and new herbal farm, and will continue to offer individuals and institutions an opportunity to receive local vegetables, eggs, and herbs by subscribing to our alternative distribution programs—The Mixed Basket weekly Program and Institutional Basket Program.

The Hattie Carthan Community Market is unveiling the Justice Tree Mural, a collaborative communal project between four New York City food producers and three visual artists, that envisions food justice as a tool for planetary transformation.

The 8.5' wide by 12' high mural will stand at the head of the community market, the site of the weekly Saturday farmers market. The art piece is intended to stimulate more than superficial conversations about food, justice, and equity needed to address deeper systemic issues which promote the injustice and inequities within our food system. The vision of the mural is to cultivate a deeper communal awareness around the layers of oppression and inequity in the United States food system and inspire communities to exercise their sovereign human right to participate in a just food system.

The Hattie Carthan Community market is a community revitalization project that grew out of an abandoned, trash strewn lot put into the use of the commons by Food Justice farmer/multi-disciplinary artist Yonnette Fleming, 13 elderly Hattie Carthan gardeners, and hundreds of community volunteers. The market opened for its eighth season this year providing Bedford Stuyvesant youths and community with cultural programs food justice educational programming and increased access to local food.

Marking Socrates Sculpture Park’s 30th anniversary this year, the institution presents Landmark, a series of artist commissions and projects that transforms the land both physically and symbolically. Once an industrial landfill and illegal dumping ground, Socrates has transformed itself into New York City’s preeminent sculpture park and social space for public art, community engagement and urban discovery. Landmark directly addresses the idea of place as intimately tied to social and ecological structures, to maintenance and stewardship, and to evolution over time.

Landmark features eight different artist projects including a newly commissioned major earthwork by Meg Webster. Additional artists in the exhibition include Abigail DeVille, Brendan Fernandes, Cary Leibowitz, Jessica Segall, Casey Tang, the curatorial collective ARTPORT_making waves, and a Broadway Billboard by Hank Willis Thomas. Since its inception in 1986, Socrates and the surrounding area of Queens, New York has rapidly changed. Whether by engaging directly with the land or commenting on the neighborhood’s cultural and economic shifts, each artwork in Landmark reflects historic transformations in the making.

Please join us for the closing reception of the Faces of Cuba exhibiton. This is the final chance to see this fabulous show. This photo exhibit is the result of a "people to people" exchange in which the artist participated last October.

It is not intended to be a travelogue or to express his political opinion. The various images convey his impressions of Cuba and the Cuban people.

The recent presidential visit and talk of lifting the embargo lend interesting context. The artist and group visited Havana, Cienfuegos, and Trinidad. Music and art were everywhere and the crumbling Spanish architecture made for many great images.
