It is said that the Internet is making the world a smaller place, connecting people and places that were once hugely separated by many miles and mindsets. However, the world has been getting “smaller” for years — in large part due to immigration and the free flow of ideas that come with it.

Now on view at the Conference House Park visitor center and at the Biddle House in Conference House Park, this exhibit highlights narratives of important pioneers in the fields of maritime navigation and communication so people today can understand how our ancestors started making the world “smaller” slowly but surely over centuries by learning how to travel vast oceans. The exhibit also includes a selection of devices, navigational maps and prints from the Museum of Maritime Navigation and Communication (located in Rosebank, S.I.), devoted to preserving and displaying devices and equipment that were used over the years to navigate waters worldwide. This exhibit also includes a working model of a dry dock.

Join us on the lawn for a full production of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, produced by The Drilling Company. A familiar sight – a romantic Bryant Park wedding – develops into a modern-day twist on Shakespeare’s classic comedy, full of madcap revelry and literary fantasy.

This event is part of the Bryant Park Picnics series. Each Picnics evening is free to the public with no dress code, no tickets, and no lines. Over 200 blankets are free to borrow so audience members can spread out and relax while enjoying the performance. Beer and wine are available for purchase, along with food from Hester Street Fair on Friday evenings.

This is an introduction overview to Oregon State University's (OSU) "Introduction to Permaculture Design", a free online long distance learning college course. After this workshop you will be fully familiarized with the fundamental concepts and have hands on practice before taking the full introduction curriculum online. We will provide all study and learning materials to prepare you for OSU's Course taught by Andrew Millison.

In this introduction we will explain what defines permaculture designs basics, including its ethics based philosophies and principles, and how permaculture uses nature as a guide to learn from and inform its decision making matrix.

After the morning class, we will rework Genesis into its transition period towards permaculture by:

  • Addressing its needs
  • Developing soil systems
  • Different composting practices
  • Water harvesting and irrigation
  • Bio-remediation while applying permaculture principles to each task in the garden on an ongoing basis each week and throughout the year

Please pack a lunch if you wish or a bodega and a supermarket are nearby.

World Environment Day is a day for everyone, everywhere. Since it began in 1972, global citizens have organized many thousands of events, from neighbourhood clean-ups, to action against wildlife crime, to replanting forests. The theme for World Environment Day 2018 on June 5 is plastic pollution.

Ahead of World Environment Day, join our Urban Park Rangers on a hike through Central Park where park rangers will discuss ways the participants can continue to be conscious of their environment. This years theme is focused on plastic pollution, so Rangers will include talking points about the negative affects of non reusable plastics.

Discover Freshkills Park and experience the unique landscape and spectacular views the landfill-to-park project has to offer. This free event is a special opportunity to spend a summer afternoon exploring the future park while the site is closed to the public. Hundreds of acres and miles of trails will be open for tours, bicycling, and activities for all ages.

At 2,200 acres, Freshkills Park is almost three times the size of Central Park and the largest park to be developed in New York City in over 100 years. It also has a significant history as the site of the Fresh Kills Landfill, which was the largest landfill in the world before closing in 2001. Since then, the site has become a place for wildlife, recreation, science, education, and art. As the park is built in phases, free tours and events provide early access for learning and exploration opportunities.

Discovery Day will include the following activities:

  • Birdwatching tours with NYC Audubon
  • Free bicycle rentals
  • Kite-flying and other activities with NYC Parks
  • Music performances by Staten Island Philharmonic
  • Spoken word performance organized by the Staten Island Creative Community
  • Sunprint art with Alice Austen House
  • Wind chime-making with Skip LaPlante, with supplies from Materials for the Arts

During the event, free shuttles will provide transportation to and from the Staten Island Ferry Terminal in St. George. Parking will be available just outside Freshkills Park in lots near 350 Wild Avenue. From there, visitors can take a shuttle bus or walk or bike one mile to the main event area.

Over the course of the 1800s, weddings in New York City evolved from intimate private ceremonies to large, lavish affairs. This exhibition explores the changes in wedding customs as the 19th century progressed, including the trousseau, printed invitations, and the giving of gifts.

Highlights include Eliza Tredwell’s 1820 empire-style embroidered cotton wedding dress and Sarah Ann Tredwell’s 1872 silk bridal dress made in Paris, the highest fashion of the post-Civil War bustle period. Accessories include silk wedding boots, and earrings, corsage, and headpiece of wax orange blossoms.

This exhibition is on view on Thursdays through Mondays (except major holidays) from May 3 to July 30. The house is open on Thursdays from noon to 8:00 p.m. and Fridays through Mondays from noon to 5:00 p.m.

Village Community Boathouse is offering free Community Rowing in our fleet of Whitehall Gigs. No experience is necessary though rowing does require some physical dexterity.

Community Rowing events are free sessions that include a basic introduction to rowing for first timers (safety orientation, rowing technique, and terminology) and of course plenty of actual rowing on the Hudson River. The rows take place in five-person wooden rowboats that Village Community Boathouse builds on site.

Please note: The rows last, depending on river conditions and crew experience, between one and three hours. Please arrive on-time as the crews will be assigned before 1:00 p.m. Bring extra water, a hat, and sunscreen as you will be rowing outdoors in the hot sun. Rowing is weather dependent and will be canceled for high winds, rain, or thunderstorms. All participants must sign a waiver and be able to climb a ladder.

In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City—a place where history is made, not merely recorded.

As a historic house museum run by NYC Parks, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together.

In celebration of our 75th Anniversary of Gracie being a mayoral residence, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled New York 1942. This is the second in a series of installations envisioning New York through the framework of Gracie Mansion as it has been inhabited over time. It includes artwork, documents and objects from the period that the La Guardias lived in Gracie, shown together to tell a more complete story of the overall historic context as perceived from diverse perspectives.
