Culled from the ongoing series “Jewels from The Hinterland” (2013–present), this exhibition renders verdant alcoves and expansive green spaces throughout New York City, as well as select sites across the United States. Featuring black and brown artists, writers, culture workers, and thinkers positioned centrally in each image, A Collective Utterance offers an exploration into the tender interiors of individuals that constitute the creative communities of a city, through an associative, atmospheric mapping of its outdoor spaces.

Spanning sites such as Riverside Park, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, and Central Park, Green’s photographs present quiet, quotidian portraits—nuanced compositions that revel in her subjects’ subtle gestures, varied postures, and soft gazes. Documenting a community that is tight-knit yet sprawling in scope, Green’s project deeply engages with the historical and social role of photographic portrait, as a tool deployed to communicate, classify, or reinforce particular notions of subjectivity. Yet “Jewels from the Hinterland” destabilizes such structures, with photographic portraits that are as much a product of the subject’s agency, as they are of Green’s intent to portray their complexity. Through these insistently beautiful photographs, we access a kaleidoscopic consideration of what it means to find solace, comfort, and visibility within a community often relegated to the margins.

A project such as “Jewels from the Hinterland” takes on a particular type of urgency within the context of this sociocultural moment of seemingly interminable crisis, where the imaging of black and brown bodies is often deployed to a particular end. Whether portrayed in a mythical manner or as the sites of structural or physical trauma, black and brown bodies are ever in a state of being performed upon. But here, they are left to be. Collectively, these images attest to the tenderness and the strength, the beauty and the intricacy, that is present if only one were to spend time, and look and listen closely.

A Collective Utterance is organized by Oluremi C. Onabanjo.

Come to Fort Tryon Park and try something new. Join us on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday mornings for one hour of walking, stretching, and strengthening exercises.

For a breath of fresh air, take your workouts outdoors. Parks are becoming a logical alternative environment for those who want to add variety to their workouts, or who just don't like the gym. And, it's an affordable way to increase physical activity opportunities, because there's nothing special to build.

Exercise with a view, in natural sunlight, with green scenery all around bestows health benefits that can’t be found indoors. Scientific studies have shown that the pleasure of being outdoors for example gives your brain, psyche, and immune system an extra boost.

All of our fitness programs are free, led by trained professionals, and suitable for all levels. Wear comfortable clothing and bring water. Please check back for rain and weather/air advisory cancels.

Please note: Fitness programs are canceled if the weather is lower than 20 degrees and when there are icy conditions. Saturday morning walks begin at 8:30 a.m.

The Bronx is both a place and a collection of metaphors, a peninsula attached to the mainland in a city of islands. In many ways, it is defined by its diversities—social, demographic, geographic and temporal. Hospitals, museums, universities, formal gardens, beaches, parks, and historical sites are prominent features of the landscape. Massive public housing developments, neighborhoods of six-story apartment buildings and private homes, and bucolic landscapes surrounding long-standing estates can be found within the borders of the Bronx.

The photographers represented in this exhibit are connected to the Bronx by birth, residency, work, or affinity. Each has a unique history, a particular point of view, and an evolving personal story. Who we are as individuals and as a group is represented in this exhibit. We are creating a photographic archive of the Bronx. The Bronx Photographers Collaborative hopes these images speak to, inform, provoke, and inspire you to join us in documenting, celebrating, and advocating for the borough that means so much to us and has contributed so much to who we are.

Onabanjo.

Join us at Le Petit Versailles Garden on the longest day of the year for the city-wide celebration of music, Make Music NY.

Rain or shine.

With performances by:

  • 4:15 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.: NYOBS
NYOBS is Michael Cacciatore, Peter Cramer, John Michael Swartz and Jack Waters. An alternative experimental free association “kitchen“ band born at Punk Island 2014. From trance lyrics to primal screams, NYOBS pierces the restive soul with mindblowing inducements of tonal and aural synthesthesia.
  • 5:30 p.m. – 6:45 p.m.: DJ Bobby G
Painter, founding member of ABC No Rio, and member of Collaborative Project, including such exhibitions as Times Square Show and the Real Estate Show, which led to the creation of ABC No Rio.
  • 8:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.: Mark Street and the Lost Orchestra (Bradford Reed, Nikki D’Agostino, Jim Coleman)
Lost Notes From Home – Shot in New York over the course of 5 years, this superimposing video and 16mm filmed vignettes are culled from the theater of the street. Live improvised music challenges teases the visuals so that the two are in spirited conversation. Inspired by the tradition of street photography, this piece allows small quotidian moments to flourish. Mark Street is a New York-based filmmaker whose work has appeared at the Tribeca (five times), Sundance, Rotterdam, New York, London, San Francisco, New York Underground, Sarajevo, Viennale, Ourense (Spain), Mill Valley, South by Southwest, and other film festivals. Bradford Reed is an American multi-instrumentalist, experimental luthier, and member of avant-garde band King Missile III. Nikki D’Agostino is widely recognised as one of Australia’s most entertaining female accordionists, keeping the rare art alive and educating souls with the world sounds of the piano accordion. Jim Coleman is a founding member of the 1990s noise rock band Cop Shoot Cop, and specializes in instrumental electronic music and film scores.

Summer Solstice is the longest and most light-filled day of the year, and one of our favorite days to celebrate at Socrates. Mark this midsummer phenomenon with art-making workshops and activities from The Noguchi Museum, Free Style Arts Association, and The Blue Bus Project, and join artist / storyteller Satya Celeste to transform the grove of trees into a communal art piece. On stage, we feature youth performances from 696 Build Queensbridge, and Secret Society Dance Company choreographed by Traequan Middleton representing Astoria Houses’ HANAC Cornerstone. Afterwards, catch Queens native and vocal artist/performer STEFA*’s powerful sonic layering and vocal improvisations, followed by an all women drum ensemble Batalá New York’s high-energy Afro-Brazilian rhythms. At sunset, gather around the hill for Urban Shaman Mama Donna’s annual waterfront Solstice ritual uniting all in reverence and positive energy.

Make Music New York is a one-day collection of free, outdoor concerts taking place every June 21, on the longest day of the year. On this day, musicians of all ages, backgrounds and skill levels are empowered to perform in over 400 public outdoor spaces throughout all five boroughs of NYC, energizing the entire city in the process. Over its eleven year history, Make Music New York has grown to become NYC’s largest one-day collection of free concerts. This year, our park will be the venue for two fantastic performances:

6:30pm - 7:30pm: Mike Acerbo

American singer songwriter Mike Acerbo was born in the Bronx, NY and raised in the hamlet of Pearl River, NY. After moving back to New York City in the spring of 1996, Acerbo met Geoffrey Kiorpes (pianist, composer, arranger) and Leah Coloff (cellist, composer, arranger), who helped him formulate his raw talent into a more cohesive sound and fully realize the vision he had for his music. Acerbo’s influences are broad – ranging from Fleetwood Mac and Joni Mitchell to the alternative sounds of Kate Bush and Sufjan Stevens. His songs are personal, poetic and poignant representing the artist's perspective on relationships, loss, and the struggle to find one's self. He is currently in the process of recording his follow up record entitled, "Your Dark Place."

7:30pm - 8:30pm: Mayari (May)

Mayari is a multifaceted Mexican economist/singer/statistician who brings a compilation of eclectic popular music that flirts with jazz. Her music is a mixture of styles, moods, topics, and languages that include: blues, foxtrot, swing, pop, tango, reggae, love, social awareness, contemplation, banality, sadness, passion, English, French, Italian and Spanish.

Get an advance sneak preview of the documentary "Whose Streets?" before their POV premiere on July 30th on PBS.

"WHOSE STREETS?"
directed by Sabaah Folayan and Damon Davis

Told by the activists and leaders who live and breathe this movement for justice, an unflinching look at the Ferguson uprising. When unarmed teenager Michael Brown is killed by police and left lying in the street for hours, it marks a breaking point for the residents of St. Louis, Missouri. Grief, long-standing racial tensions and renewed anger bring residents together to hold vigil and protest this latest tragedy. Empowered parents, artists, and teachers from around the country come together as freedom fighters. As the National Guard descends on Ferguson with military grade weaponry, these young community members become the torchbearers of a new resistance.

This event is a collaboration with POV, the award-winning independent non-fiction film series on PBS: www.pbs.org/pov.

The Cinema Garden Party is sponsored, in part, by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M.
