The Hattie Carthan Community Farmers Market is opening for its ninth season of healthy food, activities, education and food justice programming. The Hattie Carthan Community Farmers Market has engaged hundreds of local youths, distributed over 10 tons of fresh food ,recycled 24 tons of organic waste via its market compost dropoff operation, hosted 240 community market sessions, delivered 550 cooking demonstrations, 16 bread baking workshops and more in its eight seasons of operation.

2017 brings several new initiatives to the Market. This season, our newly formed food justice collective will introduce food justice activities around the newly constructed food justice mural. The market continues to grow its youth program in order to employ, educate, and empower local teenagers through the Hattie Carthan Urban Agriculture Youth Corps. Through strategic partnerships with local partners, the markets have introduced bus stop and subway advertisements, author readings in our children's garden, and weekly deliveries to Head Start and hospital outpatient centers. Our Healthy Gains through Baking with Whole Grains takes place in the cooking island area in September. The markets will continue to offer individuals and institutions an opportunity to receive local vegetables, local eggs and herbs by subscribing to our alternative distribution programs: The Mixed Basket Weekly and Institutional Basket Program.

The Lenape Gallery at the Conference House Park visitor center invite you to an exhibition of Roxanne Jacobson photographs, Occupied Sites: A Look at Staten Island's Prehistory, opening on Saturday, November 11, 2017, and on view through January 27, 2018.

Opening Reception: Saturday, November 11, 2017 1:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m.

The gallery is open on Mondays through Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Admission is free. The gallery is closed on holidays.

Occupied Sites is part of Jacobson's documentary project, Visible Traces, that looks at prehistoric archaeological sites that have been impacted by development. This project locates, intervenes, and reveals sites that have been destroyed - seeking to make visible a history that has been erased from the land. "By engaging with damaged sites, my practice acts as a medium between the past and the present, revealing and juxtaposing alternate ontologies that have been lost and documenting them visually". It details a would-be father’s wanderings through the figurative landscapes of memory and imagination as well as the literal landscapes of the Bronx, Shanghai, suburban New Jersey, and the Japanese island of Miyajima. As the speaker navigates his days, he attempts to show his unborn daughter “what life is like/here where you ought to be.”

A three-time BRIO winner, Matthew Thorburn is the author of five previous collections of poems, including This Time Tomorrow and the chapbook A Green River in Spring. This program concludes with a Q&A facilitated by Bronx Writers Center Director, Charlie Vazquez.

Three tribes of the Lenape nation lived on and near Staten Island: the Tappans, Hackensacks, and Raritans. They were known as fierce and tenacious warriors when they had to fight; however, they preferred to choose a path of peace with the Europeans and other tribes. (The name Lenape (len-NAH-pay) means “The People” or “Original People.”) The Lenapes lived on the West Shore of Staten Island and hunted mastodons, giant caribou, and other large animals for food and clothing.

What was America like before the arrival of Christopher Columbus? Learn about the Lenape people who once inhabited Staten Island and their way of life.

The Public Theater’s Mobile Unit, which strengthens community engagement with the arts by bringing free world-class productions of Shakespeare to communities all across New York City, journeys through tragedy into comedy with an enchanting new production of THE WINTER'S TALE, directed by Lee Sunday Evans (Caught, Porto).

Dire misunderstanding changes the course of destiny when King Leontes becomes convinced that his wife is pregnant with his friend’s child. The maligned wife perishes, the accused friend flees, and the cursed infant is left to die alone on the shore. But from the depths of tragedy, wondrous things can occur. What’s lost is found, false identities lead to true love, and the miracle of forgiveness brings new life to the world in one of Shakespeare’s most treasured romances.

Did you know that the north end of Central Park has a rich history that includes the British having been stationed here during the American Revolution, and American troops stationed there during the War of 1812? Recent archaeological and historical investigations in the area have revealed even more information about how the "Fort Landscape" was used in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, before this area was part of Central Park. This season, join our guides and learn the history of this part of the park, get insight into the studies in the area, and appreciate the recent restorations undertaken by the Conservancy.

Highlights of this tour include McGowan's Pass, Fort Clinton, Nutter's Battery, and the Harlem Meer.

The tour route involves many hills and stairs, and some uneven terrain. The tour starts at Charles A. Dana Discovery Center (inside the park at 110th Street between Fifth and Lenox Avenues), and ends near the park perimeter at 106th Street and Fifth Avenue.

For weather cancellation and other ticket policies, please review the Central Park Conservancy's policies carefully.

Found in Translation brings together published translators working in the three most common non-English languages spoken in Flushing—Spanish, Chinese, and Korean—to lead a workshop on the poetry translation process with members of the public.

Participants will NOT need to know the original language. We will use the information provided by the translators to make a version that stands on its own as a poem in English. In this way, participants will confront the cultural, aesthetic, and ethical questions that translators face when bringing the literature of one language into another. A facilitated discussion will follow the group workshop.

The Hattie Carthan Community Farmers Market is opening for its ninth season of healthy food, activities, education and food justice programming. The Hattie Carthan Community Farmers Market has engaged hundreds of local youths, distributed over 10 tons of fresh food, recycled 24 tons of organic waste via its market compost dropoff operation, hosted 240 community market sessions, delivered 550 cooking demonstrations, 16 bread baking workshops and more in its eight seasons of operation.

Sunday market reopens for a fifth season July 30, 2017 on the farm, with a series of healing events which highlight the value of herbs and non-invasive healing modalities for humans. This year, the farm has embarked on a 3 year scale up campaign in order to create the infrastructure needed to educate our community and operate an herbal distribution program which supplies local herbs and herbal products to the natural healing community.

Come join us for Community Baking Day at the Old Stone House brick oven!

Bring something to bake — or several things! The wood-fired oven is huge and it’ll be at baking temperature all day long. Firing the oven will start around 9:00 a.m., and we’ll bake from noon-ish until 4:00 p.m.. Drop by any time!

We’ll be standing around outside the entire time, so be sure to dress comfortably! Wear layers for warmth, and be sure to wear sturdy shoes.

If you’re baking, a suggested donation of $5 to the Old Stone House for the Oven Fund would be much appreciated — it helps pay for firewood. Thanks!

Ray Felix presents a dark, yet whimsical tale based on the life of Edgar Allen Poe while residing in the Bronx. Based on both fact and fiction, "Poe is the Raven" gives new light and insight on the secret life of Edgar Allan Poe.

Inspired by his visits to Poe Cottage, Ray Felix became intrigued by spiritual ether surrounding the Poe property and the stories told by the long time
tour guide of the Poe cottage. Felix's imprint "Bronx Heroes," takes stories from American History and transforms them into super heroes. Felix believes this allows Bronxites to appreciate everyday heroes from Bronx history and gain a greater understanding of their borough’s historically rich past.

In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City—a place where history is made, not merely recorded.

As a historic house museum run by NYC Parks, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together.

In celebration of our 75th Anniversary of Gracie being a mayoral residence, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled New York 1942. This is the second in a series of installations envisioning New York through the framework of Gracie Mansion as it has been inhabited over time. It includes artwork, documents and objects from the period that the La Guardias lived in Gracie, shown together to tell a more complete story of the overall historic context as perceived from diverse perspectives.
