Join the NYC Parks Stewardship team and staff at the Greenbelt Native Plant Center to process beachgrass (Ammophila breviligulata) for the upcoming spring season!

Ammophila is the dominant coastal grass in our region, helping to build and stabilize front dunes. Because the grass primarily spreads by rhizome, we harvest bare-root plant material from GNPC production plots to replant into dune restoration projects. Before planting, the stems must be cleaned and packaged. This process involves hand-stripping outer brown layers and excess roots, ensuring the viability of the green material and facilitating its replanting.

Volunteers should dress in clothes that can get dirty, close-toed shoes, and warm layers. Facemasks are required! Please note this event will occur inside of a greenhouse with room for social distancing, or outside if weather allows.

Brooklyn Botanic Gardens annual Making Brooklyn Bloom event returns on Saturday, March 12 with Gardening in Place: A Virtual Making Brooklyn Bloom, a virtual conference focused on the ways gardening anchors our meaning of home.

The day will combine prerecorded presentations with live, interactive Q&A sessions. Talks include “In My Own Backyard: Turning Inward, Making Space,” a personal reflection by community gardening advocate Ena McPherson; and the Wilbur A. Levin Keynote Address, “Altering Brooklyn Forever: The Greening of a Beloved Borough,” by Wambui Ippolito, horticulturist and landscape designer. This year’s conference will dig into often-overlooked horticultural histories as well as personal life stories to examine the ways in which who we are and where we come from show up in our gardens throughout Brooklyn and beyond.

Gardening in Place: A Virtual Making Brooklyn Bloom will take place on Zoom. The program is free and preregistration is required.

The NYC Compost Project, created by the NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY) in 1993, works to reduce waste in NYC and rebuild NYC’s soil by providing New Yorkers with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities they need to produce and use compost locally. NYC Compost Project programs and staff are funded and managed through the DSNY Bureau of Recycling and Sustainability (BRS) in partnership with host institutions.

There is so much to observe in the great outdoors, but it can be a little overwhelming to know what we’re looking at when there are so many things in our view. Sometimes, it’s a good idea to look small and close. Let’s take a short virtual trip to the forest floor and explore just one square foot of what lies beneath our feet in the woods. What can we see/feel/smell/hear in just a small space? What are some of the things we can identify, and what are some of the questions that are raised that we can walk away with to find out more?

Kayak along Freshkills Park's waterways! This two-mile round-trip paddle is a chance to explore the creeks and shorelines of Freshkills Park and experience the wildlife while the site is closed to the public. We know this program fills quickly and wish we could offer it more frequently. But we have a small staff and are generally limited to trips on the weekend during high tide.

There is a $20 suggested donation per participant. Your donation supports education, programming, and research at the Freshkills Park Alliance and makes programs like this possible.

Your ticket admits 1 car. Because of COVID-19 restrictions, all participants must provide their own car that will stay on-site the whole time. Participants may not use a bicycle, taxi or ride-share service. Each ticket holder may bring up to 3 additional guests in their car. During registration, you will be asked about additional participants in your car. Due to limited reservations, carpooling with friends and family is encouraged.

Register online

Location provided with confirmation email: We will meet and caravan onto the Freshkills Park site together.

Plan Ahead: Wear sturdy shoes that you don’t mind getting wet or muddy and clothes that can get wet. Please also bring water and sunblock. Kayaks and life jackets will be provided. You will be asked to sign an activity waiver before participating in the program. Do not attend if you are sick or have been exposed to COVID-19.
