Carnegie Hall Citywide brings Cha Wa’s high voltage music, which fuses fat funky beats with New Orleans-style brass and Mardi Gras Indian spectacle, to the park. You’ll move to their intoxicating groove and imagine yourself part of a jubilant New Orleans second line parade.

Lead singer J’Wan Boudreaux’s gritty vocals are steeped in the Crescent City’s legendary Mardi Gras tradition where African-American men march in Native American dress inspiring vibrant street music. While Cha Wa honors the tradition with pulse-quickening and foot-stomping rhythms, they also add a socially conscious element with songs addressing injustice.

Puerto rican salsa singer Lalo Rodriguez was a child prodigy; by 16 years old he had joined the legendary salsero Eddie Palmieri's band, appearing on his Grammy-winning LPs Sun Of Latin Music in 1974 and Unfinished Masterpiece in 1976. As a solo artist, he was a star of the salsa romantica era in the late 80s/early 90s, cracking the Billboard top 10 with the saucy 1988 single "Ven, devórame otra vez" (Come, devour me again). He's joined by brothers William and Nelson Moreno—better known as Los Hermanos Moreno-a duo formed in New Jersey in 1989 known for their aggressive salsa style and intricate arrangements. Affectionately known as "Nelson the babyface" and "Willie the killer," the pair made the latin charts in the 90s with their salsa hits "Sopa de Pichón" and "Quimbombo."

Join the Fort Tryon Park Trust, NYC Parks, and the Michels family in honoring the late Council Member Stan Michels at the 11th annual Memorial Jazz Concert.

Enjoy live jazz by local impresario Marjorie Eliot and her ensemble underneath the majestic elms on the promenade, alongside the beautiful Heather Garden and overlooking the Hudson River.

Stan Michels represented Northern Manhattan in the City Council for 24 years from 1978 through 2001. He was chair of the Committee on Environmental Protection, and his legislative record was notable for his work fighting on behalf of tenants for the expansion of the city’s recycling program, for the protection of our water supply and cleaner air, and against childhood lead poisoning, smoking in public places, and unreasonable noise. He was also a steadfast advocate for parks, allocating over $50 million for park improvements in Washington Heights, Inwood, and Harlem, including virtually every playground in his district.

The promenade where this concert is being held was named in his honor shortly before he passed away on August 1, 2008.

We hope you can be with us to remember Stan on the eleventh anniversary of his passing.

This program will be accessible to people with disabilities.

In Association with Brasil Summerfest

A showcase of Brazilian music from across the spectrum highlighting the unequivocal cultural richness of the country’s Northeast. From the parched hinterlands of Pernambuco to a vast catalog of music that has topped the charts in Brazil, Alceu Valença encompasses modern and tropical sounds without losing his undeniable roots from Brazil’s Northeast. This performance marks his first time in the U.S. since his 1993 SummerStage debut. He’s joined by Cordel do Fogo Encantado, a musical-poetic rock influenced group who have a reputation for dramatic theatrical performances with massive drum sets; LaBaq, a self-taught multi-instrumentalist who splits her time between Europe and Brazil and typically writes gentle songs bursting with emotion but has been recently dabbling in electronica dissonance; and DJ Grace Kelly, the Berlin-via-Bahia DJ who presents Afro Brazilian music and Latin American sounds such as Baile Funk filtered through electro and house.

One of hip-hop's great storytellers, Slick Rick has put on narrative clinics ever since his first appearance on Doug E. Fresh's "La Di Da Di" in 1985. With a trademark eyepatch, clever raps and a vault's worth of loud jewelry, Rick the Ruler's inimitable style is often imitated but rarely equaled. His oft-sampled classics, like "Children's Story" from The Great Adventures of Slick Rick, have reverberated through several generations of MCs in his wake. He's joined by WBLS DJ Chuck Chillout, who's worked with Run-D.M.C. and Public enemy and is one of the first DJs to play Rick's music.

Each region brings to the festival and its participants something “to give” which is representative of that region, including the much-loved “Dance of the Pineapple.”

Ballet Folklórico Mexicano de Nueva York has presented their Guelaguetza celebration in NYC since 2013, and have been sharing their passion for Mexican cultural heritage and tradition for over 35 years.

The Afropop quartet Magic System has been known for high-energy performances and magical vibes since its founding in 1996 in Ivory Coast. Early hits include “Momo” from their debut album Papitou (1997) and “1er Gaou,” a remix of which, from French DJ & producer Bob Sinclar, helped break them in France and ultimately, throughout Europe—they would later crack Billboard’s European Top 100 with their 2006 LP Cessa Kié la Vérité. Their 2014 hit single ‘Magic in the Air” became a signature song of FIFA’s World Cup. They’re supported Burkinabe rapper Smarty, whose hit making lyrics focus on African issues, Mozambican singer Selma Uamusse, a rising star whose multiple talents span several sonorities from African music to soul and gospel, and Ivory Coast’s DJ Birane.

Selma Uamusse is presented in association with Arte Institute. For more information, visit www.arteinstitute.org.

FELA!, the Broadway musical based on the life and music of the founding father of Afrobeat—the Nigerian musician and activist Fela Kuti—brought the artist's innovative sounds and powerful lyrics to life even after his death, winning Tony awards for Best Choreography, Best Costume Design of a Musical, and Best Sound Design of a Musical. FELA! The Concert is a concert version, touring production of the musical, featuring original costumes and members of the cast backed by a 10-piece Afrobeat band and a massive canvas of images. The closest you can get to an actual Fela Kuti performance in 2019, the production remains faithful to the charismatic champion of human rights, one of the world's most celebrated musical rebels.

This 70s soul revue features three of the decade's classic groups, revered by a generation of R&B fans and living on in the next as samples in hip-hop music. The Stylistics had a stunning run of top ten R&B singles out of Philadelphia in the early 70s, with some, such as "Break Up to Make Up" and "You Make Me Feel Brand New," cracking the top ten on the pop charts. The Manhattans (who hailed from Jersey City, NJ) formed in the 60s as a doo-wop group but were able to sustain success into the early 80s, winning a Grammy in 1981 for their R&B hit "Shining Star." Harold Melvin's Blue Notes got their start as The Charlemagnes in the 1950s, but didn't break out until the early 70s, when they brought in a young Teddy Pendergrass (first as a drummer, then as lead singer) and signed to Gamble & Huff's Philadelphia International label. Their biggest hits include "If You Don't Know Me by Now," "I Miss You," and "Wake Up Everybody"; in 1976 Thelma Houston would score a #1 hit on the pop charts with a cover of their song "Don't Leave Me This Way," which would come to be known as one of the disco era's most iconic hits.

Corinne Bailey Rae’s brand of soulful R&B has won her multiple Grammy and MOBO awards; gentle music with heart and nuance, over the past decade she’s written about love and intuition as her soul-jazz sound has evolved. The Guardian named her latest studio album The Heart Speaks In Whispers “the best R&B of 2016”; It was also featured on President Barack Obama’s summer playlist. She’s joined by the American singer Jose James, who wields a rich baritone and blends modern jazz, with cross-generational references that dabble in traditional and contemporary jazz and soul.

Performing: Bertha Hope Quintet

Socrates and The Jazz Foundation have presented this beloved live music series since 2016, featuring world-class musicians on each second Thursday throughout the summer. This year’s edition focuses on the work of three profoundly important pianists.

One of jazz’s living legends, pianist/composer Bertha Hope has toured globally with artists like Nat Adderley, Dizzy Gillespie, and Eddie Henderson, while being a respected educator and bandleader, with several albums under her leadership. In 2018, she won the National Jazz Museum in Harlem’s Legends of Jazz Award. This concert will include selections from the under-appreciated songbook of her late husband Elmo Hope.

Jazz and Stargazing: Join students and astronomy faculty from the Natural Sciences Department at LaGuardia Community College to view stars and other celestial bodies through their telescope on each night of Jazz at Socrates.

Crumb, the nascent Brooklyn-via-Boston four-piece named "The Best of What's Next" by Paste Magazine in 2018, dilate singer Lila Ramani's songs into freeform ‘60s psych, loose jazz, and indie rock, referencing the likes of Melody’s Echo Chamber and Novos Baianos. With support from Brooklyn's Phony Ppl, a sprawling veteran hip-hop collective signed to Lyor Cohen's 300 Entertainment that once backed Fetty Wap on Jimmy Kimmel Live! for a performance of "Trap Queen," and Purr, the bedroom pop project from NYC natives Eliza Callahan and Jack Staffen which recently recorded with Foxygen’s Jonathan Rado.

It's been 40 years since Vincent and Patricia Chin set up VP Records in Jamaica, Queens; the success of that shop would prompt them to found VP Records, now one of the most important sources of reggae and dancehall music in the world. To celebrate, VP hosts a showcase with some of its illustrious alumni: Elephant Man, whose 2003 hit "Pon di River, Pon di Bank" and collaborations with Wyclef Jean and Busta Rhymes helped further blur the lines between dancehall and hip hop; Junior Reid, the former Black Uhuru vocalist whose 1989 classic "One Blood" has spawned countless remakes and interpolations; Estelle, the genre-bending, Grammy-winning English singer best known for her Kanye West collaboration "American Boy" and now has her own album, Lover’s Rock, with VP; and Grammy-nominated Raging Fyah, a five-piece band from Kingston, Jamaica that makes music bound to the roots rock reggae tradition.

The Mountain Goats are John Darnielle, Peter Hughes, Jon Wurster, and Matt Douglas. They have been making music together as a quartet for several years. Three of them live in North Carolina and one has moved back to Rochester. Their songs often seek out dark lairs within which terrible monsters dwell, but Their mission is to retrieve the treasure from the dark lair & persuade the terrible monsters inside to seek out the path of redemption. As Axl Rose once memorably asked, in the song "terrible monster": "what's so terrible about monsters, anyway?" This is the question the Mountain Goats have been doggedly pursuing since 1991. They will never leave off this quest until every option has been exhausted. Thank you.

British soul singer Omar Lye-Fook was likely always destined to be a musician. The son of Byron Lye-Fook, a studio musician and drummer who worked with the likes of Bob Marley and the Rolling Stones, Omar was classically trained at London's Guildhall School of Music, and plays the trumpet, piano and percussion. Considered by some to be the 'father' of British neo soul, his throwback sound appeared to be ahead of its time, proving to be more influential in the canon than on the charts—he counts India.Arie, Erykah Badu, and his idol, Stevie Wonder among his fans. Since his debut album There's Nothing Like This (1990), he's dabbled in ragga, hip-hop, funk, jazz-pop, rock, and Caribbean dance sounds. He's joined by Nakhane, a London-based Xhosa polymath who has published a novel (Piggy Boy Blues) and acted in a feature film (Inxeba, or "The Wound") in addition to his musical output. But it’s his music that soars highest, with an unmistakable voice that floats over experimental electro pop compositions with lyrics that—like much of his other work—tackle the subject of queer identity in conservative society, like his recent duet with ANOHNI, "New Brighton."

As a kickoff to the national Future Sounds tour highlighting communities across the country, this concert celebrates the 50th year anniversary of the Harlem Cultural Festival. Taking place in the summer of 1969, the original festival held a series of concerts in Mount Morris Park (now known as Marcus Garvey Park), to celebrate black pride, empowerment, music, and culture, and featured the likes of Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, B.B. King, Sly & the Family Stone, Jesse Jackson, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Mahalia Jackson, and others.

Curated by Neal Ludevig, a founder of the Harlem Arts Festival, musical direction by Igmar Thomas (who has collaborated and led with the likes of Wyclef Jean, Mos Def, Esperanza Spalding, Lauryn Hill and Nas), co-hosted by Talib Kweli, the fiercely independent MC known for his incisive, hard-hitting socially conscious raps and for Black Star, and with jazz trumpeter and singer Keyon Harrold (who has performed with Common, Snoop Dogg, Jay-Z, Beyonce, and Rihanna, and most recently was heard on Don Cheadle's Miles Davis documentary Miles Ahead, this concert will feature a number of surprise special guests.

La Sonora Ponceña ("The Ponce Sound") is one of New York's longest running salsa bands; Formed in Ponce, Puerto Rico in 1954 by Enrique Lucca Caraballo and Antonio Santaella, the group has recorded 32 albums and is still going strong, now directed by Caraballo's son Papo Lucca. The band is joined by Jose "El Canario" Alberto, the Dominican salsa vocalist who moved from Santo Domingo to Puerto Rico as a young boy and got his name ("The Canary") on account of his virtuosic whistling ability. Alberto moved to New York in 1977 and got his break with Tipica '73, going on to start his own band and collaborate with the likes of Sonny Bravo, Mario Rivera, and Leopoldo Pineda. They're both supported by the Bronx's DJ Lucho, a mentee of freestyle legend "Little" Louie Vega.

Though the Wailers were first formed as a ska vocal group in 1963, they're best known as the backing band of reggae legend Bob Marley. And it was that iteration that Julian Junior Marvin was asked to join in 1974 after the departure of founding members Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer. His first recording with Bob Marley and the Wailers, Exodus, is widely considered one of the greatest albums of all time—in any genre. Since Marley's death in 1981, Marvin has cut four records with the group, and toured with various iterations of the band's lineup. Marvin fronts this current lineup, playing and singing the Bob Marley & The Wailers hits the way he believes Marley intended them to be heard. He's joined by DJ Queen Majesty, an NYC reggae selector with her own hot sauce empire.

Building off the success of last year’s Selena for Sanctuary, a free Selena-themed outdoor concert in support of immigration rights, organizer, artist manager, and activist Doris Muñoz, is bringing the event to SummerStage for 2019. Born of a series of benefit concerts she put together in Southern California in 2017 called Solidarity for Sanctuary, Muñoz’s dance parties raise funds to help immigrants navigate the bureaucratic minefield that is U.S. immigration policy to set them on the path to citizenship. This year’s party is headlined by Kali Uchis, a Colombian-American singer with a critically acclaimed debut LP (2018’s Isolation) and collaborations with Gorillaz, Juanes and Daniel Caesar. She’s supported by Cuco, an ascendant Chicano bedroom pop star who is set to drop his debut album with Interscope after a prolonged bidding war ; Ambar Lucid, an 18-year-old Dominican and Mexican-American singer-songwriter from New Jersey who writes bilingual tunes and wield finger-picked guitars and spaced out electronics with equal aplomb; DJ Svani, a Norwegian DJ and producer who spins R&B, hip-hop, dancehall, kuduro, and dembow; and the Santuario House Band, led by music director Adrian Quesada.

Jazz scion Ravi Coltrane, the son of jazz pianist Alice Coltrane and saxophonist John Coltrane, finds himself sandwiched by a cadre of powerful and talented women on this jazz-centric bill headlined by the three-time Grammy Award-winning songwriter and jazz vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater. Bridgewater, produced in association with Jill Newman Productions, who also happens to be a Tony Award-winning stage actress and was the host of NPR's syndicated radio show JazzSet with Dee Dee Bridgewater for 23 years, is joined by Quiana Lynell, the winner of the 2017 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition and who trumpeter/composer Terence Blanchard has called a "unique talent" in possession of "the maturity of a well-seasoned vocalist while having a forward-thinking approach to creativity". They are joined by "Reclamation" a piece honoring Charlie Parker, commissioned in association with The Joyce and George Wein Foundation and The Jazz Gallery, featuring Queens native Camille Thurman - what NPR All Things Considered has called a “Rare Jazz Double Threat” - an award winning composer, vocalist and saxophonist whose latest project “Waiting For The Sunrise” made its debut at #2 on the Billboard Jazz Charts and was nominated for a 2019 NAACP Image Award; Nikara Warren, a Brooklyn-born vibraphonist whose latest project, Black Wall Street, is designed as an ode to excellence in Black music; and harpist Brandee Younger , a modern talent playing an ancient instrument under the influence of Dorothy Ashby and Alice Coltrane.

Carl Allen’s jazz bonafides are indisputable—as a young drummer out of William Paterson University he earned a spot in Freddie Hubbard’s band, and would go on to play with the saxophonists George Coleman and Phil Woods (among others), and serve as the Artistic Director of Jazz Studies at the Juilliard School. The quintet he brings to SummerStage—featuring Jeremy Pelt, JD Allen, Eric Reed, and Peter Washington—pays tribute to one of his heroes, the legendary drummer Art Blakey. Allen is joined by NEA Jazz Master and one of the most respected musicians out of the hard-bop era George Coleman and his trio, the multiple GRAMMY Award nominee pianist Fred Hersch, who has been proclaimed as “the most arrestingly innovative pianist in jazz” by Vanity Fair, and the saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin, who has played with the likes of Missy Elliot, Alicia Keys, Stevie Wonder, Macy Gray, the Roots, and Anita Baker.

Famously "introduced" by Eddie Palimieri in "Llegó La India via Eddie Palmieri," Linda Viera Caballero quickly made a name for herself as La India, one of the biggest voices in salsa. But before Celia Cruz would dub her the "Princess of Salsa," she got her start in the South Bronx, where she was a founding member of the Latin Freestyle group TKA, and cut a solo record with Freestyle legends John "Jellybean" Benitez and her husband "Little" Louie Vega. After "Llegó La India via Eddie Palmieri," she blossomed into salsa royalty and never looked back, going on to work with Cruz and Tito Puente, and winning Best Salsa Album Latin Grammy for her album Intensamente India Con Canciones De Juan Gabriel. She will be joined by Cuban funk dance artist Cimafunk named by Billboard as one of “10 Latin Artists to watch in 2019.”

In partnership with the Jazz Foundation of America, we are proud to bring these fantastic performers to your west side backyard. Make sure you mark the dates now, and don’t miss a special performance by Robin Barnes - from New Orleans!

Presented in partnership with the Jazz Foundation of America.

The Jazz Foundation of America is a national non-profit committed to providing financial, legal, medical and housing assistance, as well as work opportunities, to jazz, blues and roots musicians in need, with a special focus on the elderly--those greats who have "paid their dues" but can't pay their bills due to age, illness or circumstance. Each year JFA assists in 3000 cases through its social work department, and presents nearly 1000 concerts in its performance programs. This is the organization's 30th year.

Jazz at Pier 84 is presented by JFA's Gig Fund program, which is supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature and by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.
