Sit with your wee ones and listen to stories of the “people of the mounds,” the fairies and elves found in Celtic mythology, as told by guest storyteller Marianne McShane and her blue harp. Then travel into Wave Hill’s woodland, and, using only natural materials and a bit of jute twine, create your own tiny, fairy-sized dwelling using found sticks, leaves, moss and bark, or string together a series of autumn leaves to form a fall wand or crown—and behold the magic!

At 11:00 a.m. and at noon, guest musicians Terry McCann, a guitarist and singer, and Stephen Gara on the uilleann pipes (a delicate version of the standard bagpipe), the flute and the tin whistle, offer a short concert of Irish jigs, reels and songs. The pair will also visit Wave Hill’s woodland with their instruments, to serenade the aos sí and lead a short autumn fairy parade.

Free, and admission to the grounds is free until noon.

Celebrating 50 Years of Public Art in NYC Parks]]> http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2017/10/21/its-happening-celebrating-50-years-of-public-art-in-nyc-parks http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2017/10/21/its-happening-celebrating-50-years-of-public-art-in-nyc-parks Date: October 21, 2017

This year NYC Parks is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its Art in the Parks program. Since its creation in 1967, Art in the Parks has featured over 2,000 works of art. On Saturday, October 21, NYC Parks is transforming Central Park into a stage, museum, and art studio for a free day of public art to celebrate this milestone. Art lovers, families, and park-goers will be delighted by free art exhibits, performances, and hands-on art workshops in Central Park’s beautiful East Pinetum field.

As NYC Parks’ public art program took shape in the 1960s, artistic events called “happenings” popped up in parks across the city. Blurring the line between art and everyday life, these fleeting performances combined sculpture, music, theater, dance, and poetry. They varied in size and sophistication, but always relied on audience participation.

NYC Parks’ 50th anniversary celebration "It’s Happening!" captures the same creative spirit with dynamic public artworks, hands-on workshops, and performances.

Enjoy an evening of Day of the Dead arts and crafts in Virginia Park in collaboration with the public artwork Daylighting by Lovie Pignata, Loving the Bronx, and BX Arts Factory. This event is free and great for all ages and is part of a series of weekly community building events in the park. This event is also a tribute to local resident Elizabeth Ortiz.

Lovie Pignata's public art project activates a blacktop with a bold, painted replica of the nearby Bronx River, highlighting the importance of this waterway. She has also installed retired canoes from local non-profits, which are retrofitted with seating, chessboards, planters, and wayfinding signage. Daylighting will be on view through June 19, 2018.

This exhibition and event are made possible by the Art in the Parks: UNIQLO Park Expressions Grant, which supports the creation of artworks by New York City-based emerging artists at 10 parks that are highly visible, but underserved by cultural programming. The UNIQLO grant program will transform these locations into engaging art destinations with a series of rotating exhibitions and community events through 2019.

The Socrates season always goes out with a BANG with our Halloween Harvest Festival! This year’s theme is Día de los Muertos/Day of the Dead with vibrant performance and music presented by Ballet Folklórico Mexicano de Nueva York, which has been sharing Mexican heritage and culture with the NYC community for more than 30 years.

Join us for spooky costume- and art-making with Socrates artists, fantastical face-painting with Agostino Arts, and add your mementos and relics to ancestral altars set up throughout the landscape. Urban Shaman Mama Donna will be offering harvest animal blessings for your pets, and if your pooch is in costume you can participate in a Socrates tradition – our annual Canine Costume Contest with fun prizes and local judges, including Château le Woof! Todos están bienvenidos a participar en este festival inspirado por el Dia de los Muertos, una celebración Mexicana que honora los muertos.

Presented in partnership with Ballet Folklórico Mexicano de Nueva York.
