Partnerships Academy Workshops
Partnerships for Parks (PfP) invites you to join us at one of our many free and open to the public workshops offered year-round! They are a great way to meet, network, and learn the skills needed to get involved with, build, or sustain your park group.

Upcoming Workshop: Brooklyn Parks Connections

Are you a park volunteer or supporter in Brooklyn? Come to this workshop to meet other community members caring for local parks and hear about the amazing work park groups are doing across Brooklyn!

You will learn about ways to spruce up your neighborhood park, get funding, work with NYC Parks staff in your borough, and more. You may not know all the people that play a role in maintaining and supporting your park, so join us to meet some new faces, enjoy a free dinner, and get plugged into the larger network of park volunteers & staff in your borough.

Featured Speakers: TBA

Partnerships Academy Workshops
Partnerships for Parks (PfP) invites you to join us at one of our many free and open to the public workshops offered year-round! They are a great way to meet, network, and learn the skills needed to get involved with, build, or sustain your park group.

Upcoming Workshop: How Are Parks Built? The NYC Parks Capital Process

Have you ever wondered how local parks are renovated and redesigned? How an outdated park can be transformed with fresh ideas and infrastructure?

Large scale improvements to parks, playgrounds, and greenways are happening all across New York City as part of the NYC Parks capital process; in fact, from sports field renovation to boardwalk resiliency, there are over 600 capital projects underway at this very moment.

Come to this workshop to learn:

  • The basics of how NYC Parks funds, designs, and constructs the parks we love and enjoy
  • What qualifies as a capital project, the steps for its completion--including needs assessment, procuring contractors, and construction--and how you can use the Capital Project Tracker to keep track of the timeline
  • And how communities can effectively gather data and ideas to participate in this process and provide input on park design

Featured speakers include:

  • Diane Jackier, Chief of Capital Strategic Initiatives, NYC Parks

Diane is the Chief of Capital Strategic Initiatives at NYC Parks. In this role, she oversees division-wide initiatives to improve the quality and efficiency of Parks’ capital process. She also supervises the staff in the quality assurance, data systems, and accessibility units in the Capital Division. Diane has a Master of City Planning, a Master of Science in Historic Preservation, and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Pennsylvania.

  • Krystyna Soljan, Community Visioning & Planning Manager, Partnerships for Parks

Krystyna Soljan is a community economic development professional and macro social worker dedicated to the holistic revitalization of disinvested urban neighborhoods. She currently serves as the Community Visioning & Planning Manager at Partnerships for Parks, where she helps community partners gather the data they need to support their advocacy campaigns for capital improvements in local parks. Previously, she coached and trained community groups in various settings, providing support to worker-owned cooperative businesses across NYC as well as neighborhood associations in Newark, NJ. Her favorite green spaces in NYC are the streets of Ditmas Park lined with London Planes.

Dandelion, burdock, violet leaf and ground ivy: just a few of the plants we've all encountered growing in our school and community gardens in between the rows of neatly cultivated tomato, carrot and brassica. Unwelcome as they may seem, these plants have been valued for centuries as medicines and sources of wild food. In this workshop, educators and gardeners will learn ways to help young people develop their plant identification skills, and an appreciation of the healing plants—often discarded as mere weeds—that grow abundantly all over our city.

Facilitated by Jessica Turner, Harlem Children's Zone; Grow to Learn; and GreenThumb

Throughout the month of July we will be highlighting community gardens that focus on ornamental plants as part of Botanical Month.
