Partnerships Academy Workshops
Partnerships for Parks (PfP) invites you to join us at one of our many free and open to the public workshops offered year-round! They are a great way to meet, network, and learn the skills needed to get involved with, build, or sustain your park group.

Upcoming Workshop: How Are Parks Built? The NYC Parks Capital Process

Have you ever wondered how local parks are renovated and redesigned? How an outdated park can be transformed with fresh ideas and infrastructure?

Large scale improvements to parks, playgrounds, and greenways are happening all across New York City as part of the NYC Parks capital process; in fact, from sports field renovation to boardwalk resiliency, there are over 600 capital projects underway at this very moment.

Come to this workshop to learn:

  • The basics of how NYC Parks funds, designs, and constructs the parks we love and enjoy
  • What qualifies as a capital project, the steps for its completion--including needs assessment, procuring contractors, and construction--and how you can use the Capital Project Tracker to keep track of the timeline
  • And how communities can effectively gather data and ideas to participate in this process and provide input on park design

Featured speakers include:

  • Diane Jackier, Chief of Capital Strategic Initiatives, NYC Parks

Diane is the chief of Capital Strategic Initiatives at NYC Parks. In this role, she oversees division-wide initiatives to improve the quality and efficiency of Parks’ capital process. She also supervises the staff in the quality assurance, data systems, and accessibility units in the Capital Division. Diane has a Master of City Planning, a Master of Science in historic preservation, and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Pennsylvania.

  • Krystyna Soljan, Community Visioning & Planning Manager, Partnerships for Parks

As the Community Visioning & Planning manager at Partnerships for Parks, Krystyna Soljan helps community park groups gather necessary data to support their advocacy campaigns for capital improvements in local parks. Previously, she provided technical assistance and support to worker-owned cooperative businesses across NYC, and to neighborhood leaders in Newark, NJ.

  • Evan Venegas, Group Leader, Friends of Rosemary's Playground

Queens native Evan Venegas helped found Friends of Rosemary's Playground in 2014, with other parents from the Ridgewood neighborhood. Motivated by safety concerns and a lack of green space, Evan helped build relationships between the community, elected officials, and NYC Parks. Through this advocacy work, the group has secured funds for a capital project to renovate the playground and re-imagine how great their park can be.

We'll be walking the beach to count the number of crabs present and tagging them to keep track of how many we've already seen as part of NYC Parks' ongoing effort to monitor their activity. This exciting work contributes to a long-term research study that is helping us to better understand and protect the horseshoe crabs that live in our urban waters.

Dandelion, burdock, violet leaf and ground ivy: just a few of the plants we've all encountered growing in our school and community gardens in between the rows of neatly cultivated tomato, carrot and brassica. Unwelcome as they may seem, these plants have been valued for centuries as medicines and sources of wild food. In this workshop, educators and gardeners will learn ways to help young people develop their plant identification skills, and an appreciation of the healing plants—often discarded as mere weeds—that grow abundantly all over our city.

Facilitated by Jessica Turner, Harlem Children's Zone; Grow to Learn; and GreenThumb

Throughout the month of July we will be highlighting community gardens that focus on ornamental plants as part of Botanical Month.

Riverside Park Conservancy partners with Trash Hero New York to remove trash and recyclables that are brought in with the tides and pile up along the Hudson River coastline. Join us for our monthly coastal clean-up project in Riverside Park South.

This volunteer project will not take place in the event of inclement weather. Volunteer projects are dependent on the season and the needs of the park. Closed-toed work shoes are required. Do not bring additional bags, as there is really no place to store belongings. Dress comfortably and be prepared to get dirty! Best to remove jewelry, and wear hair tied back.

The Village Community Boathouse, based on Pier 40 in Hudson River Park, seeks qualified volunteers to help with its satellite community rowing program in Prospect Park, Brooklyn. Volunteers need to be physically fit and able to lift boats on and off dollies, and willing to stand in shallow water to help load and unload boats. Some experience paddling (and, especially, rowing) small boats is desirable. Email the Village Community Boathouse at info@vcb.nyc for more info or to sign up.

The Village Community Boathouse offers free public rowing in traditional wooden rowboats every summer Saturday in Prospect Park. Rowing is on a first-come, first-served basis. Boats launch from the ramp on Well House Drive at the northwetcorner of the lake. All rowers must sign waivers and don life vests; minors must be accompanied by a parent.

Become a Volunteer
The Village Community Boathouse, based on Pier 40 in Hudson River Park, seeks qualified volunteers to help with its satellite community rowing program in Prospect Park, Brooklyn. Volunteers need to be physically fit and able to lift boats on and off dollies, and willing to stand in shallow water to help load and unload boats. Some experience paddling (and, especially, rowing) small boats is desirable. The program runs summer Saturdays from noon to 4:00 p.m. with setup beginning at 11:30 a.m. and cleanup concluding at 4:30 p.m..

America turns 242 this year, and even if we start counting from the arrival of the Dutch in 1642, New York City is less than 400 years old — a baby by global standards!

As a burgeoning metropolis in a young republic, 19th-century New York sought to strengthen its position in the world by connecting itself to history—especially Ancient Greece, regarded as the birthplace of democracy. From these efforts, the Greek Revival style of architecture was born, linking New York to the glorious “Golden Age” of Athens in the 5th century BCE.

Join us for a walking tour focused on Greek Revival architecture in the neighborhood of the 1832 Merchant’s House Museum, itself an example of this powerfully symbolic style. Along the way, we’ll learn about the specific features of Greek Revival and compare the realities of Ancient Greek civilization with the ideal presented in 19th-century America. Enjoy Greek nibbles in the garden.

5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. – Walking tour #1
6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. – Reception in the garden of the Merchant’s House Museum
7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. – Walking tour #2

Co-sponsored by the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation.
