Prescreening & Events begin at 7pm. Movie begins at sundown (Around 8:30pm)

A.O. Scott in The New York Times says this Greek comedy “presents itself as a quasi-scientific look at human male pack behavior in the wild.” What passes for the wild here is a luxury yacht on which a half-dozen middle-aged, middle-to-upper class men ward off boredom by competing to determine who is “the best in general,” with a karaoke performance of “Lovin’ You” a notable highlight. “An inspired, gorgeously photographed work of deadpan lunacy.” – Aaron Hillis, Village Voice

The Hip to Hip Theatre Company and NYC Parks present Shakespeare's play live in the park. The main performance begins at 7:30 p.m.

Henry IV, Part 1: The Prince and the Rebel
Prince Hal is caught between two worlds: in the tavern, he carouses with a wild bunch, led by the scoundrel Falstaff, but at court, the King presses him to shoulder his responsibilities as heir to the throne. Meanwhile, the rebellious Hotspur threatens to destroy the kingdom. Shakespeare's action-packed coming-of-age story asks “What makes a good leader?”

Kids' Program: Kids and the Classics - 7:00 p.m.
This free interactive workshop is the companion piece to our program of Free Shakespeare in the Parks. It is offered 30 minutes before every performance, and it is designed for children ages 4 to 12. Cinderella Samba is a contemporary twist on the classic “Cinderella” fairy tale. After Cinderella is forced to flee the gala just before midnight, the prince sets out to find the mystery woman who stole his heart, in hopes of marrying her.

The lively production features an original commissioned musical soundtrack that brings samba center-stage; handcrafted Carnival festival floats on parade; and one-of-a-kind marionettes donning their most vibrant Carnival costumes, created by the expert puppeteers from the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theater in Central Park.

The Hip to Hip Theatre Company and NYC Parks present Shakespeare's play live in the park.

The Duke of Vienna's puritanical deputy Angelo, tasked with cleaning up a city out of control, revives ancient laws regarding sex and marriage. When he unjustly sentences the young gentleman Claudio to death, Claudio's sister Isabella pleads his case...and discovers that Angelo is not as virtuous as he seems. Shakespeare's dark comedy examines the danger of placing power in the wrong hands.

The main performance will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Kids and the Classics - 7:00 p.m.
This free interactive workshop is the companion piece to our program of Free Shakespeare in the Parks. It is offered 30 minutes before every performance, and it is designed for children ages 4 to 12. It gives children a chance to interact with the text by previewing the characters and situations, and creating links between the text and their own lives through theatre games and close reading of text.

The Silence Before Bach (Spain)
Directed by Pere Portabella; 2007, 102 mins.

Prescreening & Events begin at 7pm. Movie begins at sundown (Around 8:30pm)

This fascinating, charming hybrid of documentary and drama from Spain’s legendary Surrealist circles the theme of the transformational power of great music. The screen is filled with a subway car of passionate cello-playing musicians; then we’re accompanying a guide who gives tours of Leipzig dressed in full Bach regalia; followed by Mendelssohn’s discovery of sheet music for the “St. Matthew Passion” used as wrapping paper for a chunk of raw meat. By turns funny and serious, poignant, sexy, and refreshing – a nearly unclassifiable film, filled with indelible imagery.

From the taverns of London to the palaces of Vienna, Shakespeare invites us into the personal trials and triumphs of the common people and their all-too-human leaders. Hip to Hip’s 11th season of “Free Shakespeare in the Parks” features madcap capers and epic battles, mistaken identity, and unexpected marriages, and a vibrant cast of unforgettable characters, including the iconic Falstaff.

Kids & the Classics is the companion piece to Hip to Hip’s program of “Free Shakespeare in the Parks.” This free interactive workshop is offered 30 minutes before every performance, and is designed for children ages 4 to 12. It gives children a chance to interact with the text by previewing the characters and situations, and creating links between the text and their own lives through theatre games and close reading of text.
