Enjoy a night of button making in Virginia Park in collaboration with the public artwork Daylighting by Lovie Pignata and Loving the Bronx. This event is free and great for all ages and is part of a series of weekly community building events in the park.

Lovie Pignata's public art project activates a blacktop with a bold, painted replica of the nearby Bronx River, highlighting the importance of this waterway. She has also installed retired canoes from local non-profits, which are retrofitted with seating, chessboards, planters, and wayfinding signage. Daylighting will be on view through June 19, 2018.

This exhibition and event are made possible by the Art in the Parks: UNIQLO Park Expressions Grant, which supports the creation of artworks by New York City-based emerging artists at 10 parks that are highly visible, but underserved by cultural programming. The UNIQLO grant program will transform these locations into engaging art destinations with a series of rotating exhibitions and community events through 2019.

Set in Africa, China and our own Central Park, The Princess, The Emperor, and The Duck retells storyteller Hans Christian Andersen’s world-famous fairy tales — The Princess and the Pea, The Emperor’s New Clothes and The Ugly Duckling — bringing the Theatre to life with new marionettes and hand painted scenery. Guided by a narrating Owl, audience members experience each story with the original tales that teach important life lessons still relevant to children today.

About the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre

The Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre was imported to the U.S. in 1876 as Sweden’s exhibit for the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. The enchanting Swedish architecture and craftsmanship of the structure, suggestive of a model schoolhouse, caught the eye of Frederick Law Olmsted, who brought it to Central Park in 1877

A traveling marionette company was founded in 1939 and in 1947 the Swedish Cottage became home to the company. In 1973, a permanent theater was constructed inside the Swedish Cottage, designed for marionette performances. Since then, hundreds of thousands of children and families from around the world have enjoyed its original productions.

Attend a live demonstration by Sogetsu instructors, as part of our celebration of the 90th anniversary of the Sogetsu School of Ikebana at Wave Hill. Ikebana is the Japanese tradition of flower arranging, and Sogetsu, founded in 1927, is an avant garde style, with study groups all over the world. A famous saying by founder Sofu Teshigahara—and the credo of the Sogetsu school—is that Sogetsu can be done by anyone, anywhere, anytime with any kind of material. Stop by The Shop at Wave Hill for a special promotion on Ikebana-related titles. Registration not required.
