Today, inspired by medieval puppetry and stories, construct an animated puppet of a royal ruler, a joking jester or a troubadour. Outfit yours with garments and protective armor made from fabric, foil, sequins and natural materials. Then bring it to life in your medieval castle or in Wave Hill’s delightful puppet theater.

Programs are geared to families with children between the ages of five and 10. Space is limited.

While our public tours on Fridays and Saturdays are normally geared for an adult audience, we’ve planned engaging, kid-friendly tours, hands-on activities, scavenger hunts, and more on select Saturdays. If the weather’s nice, bring a picnic and enjoy our grounds before or after your visit to the house.

If you plan to visit with children under 10, we recommend visiting before 2 p.m. to take advantage of specially planned activities for younger children.

Bring your musical instruments and join in our community parade through the Heather Garden. Learn why Fort Tryon Park has the largest heath and heather collection in the northeast, and learn how to propogate your own heathers with clippings from the shearing. Using the works of early and mid-19th century authors that Madame Jumel may have read we will use black out techniques to create a new work of art and poetry.

Black out poetry involves selecting words from a printed page of a book to create a new poem, all the other words on the page are blacked out. The methods and designs of the black out process can range from simple to ornate.

Recommended for children ages 6 and above, and led by local artist Trish Mayo, the workshop will teach participants how to create a black out design around words chosen as their poem. Participants will create a work of art to take home.

Free with museum admission. Advanced registration is recommended. To register, please email education@morrisjumel.org.
