The Garden is a 45-min interactive, meditative performance for babies and their caregivers exploring themes of nature and life cycles.

The Garden brings together a team of expert early childhood educators and artists to create this brand-new outdoor performance. We feel the rough bark of a branch; we dip our hands into dirt, then feel a gentle stream of water rain down, turning it to mud before rinsing our hands in a dish-sized pond; and while we play, we share a peaceful moment of presence with people at the very beginning of their own life cycle. Together, caregivers and babies experience a poetic meditation on liveness, nature, and growth, engaging with the cycles of the natural world with all five senses.

"What is it that makes you...YOU? Pixar Animation Studios’ all-new feature film SOUL introduces Joe Gardner (voice of Jamie Foxx) – a middle-school band teacher who gets the chance of a lifetime to play at the best jazz club in town. But one small misstep takes him from the streets of New York City to The Great Before – a fantastical place where new souls get their personalities, quirks and interests before they go to Earth. Determined to return to his life, Joe teams up with a precocious soul, 22 (voice of Tina Fey), who has never understood the appeal of the human experience. As Joe desperately tries to show 22 what’s great about living, he may just discover the answers to some of life’s most important questions."

This free two-hour parent-child workshop will combine words and pictures by parents and children to create a unique keepsake book.

Art materials and blank books will be provided. We’ll brainstorm themes and explore drawing and writing. Everyone is encouraged to bring photocopies of images they find personally important such as photos of family, objects, and places. A pair of scissors will also be welcome. (Note: Public libraries can copy pictures for free.) Parents and Children will see some examples of artists' books, explore writing and drawing ideas and create together. Their creations will be photographed and Lewis Latimer House Museum will host an exhibition in November about this project.

The NYC Parks Afterschool Program provides children ages 6 to 13 with academic support and physical activity in a safe, structured environment. This free program takes place on weekdays from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., a critical time to engage school-aged children in structured activities and expose them to new interests.

Programming is based around monthly themes supported by sports and fitness, arts and culture, and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics).
