Come home to Historic Richmond Town!

A family favorite for generations, Old Home Day returns this October featuring historic trades demonstrations, music, food, crafts, and sweet treats. The world of the past comes alive—and you may even rekindle your own memories of Richmond Town!

Old Home Day’s roots can be traced back to the 1950s, when objects from the historical museum’s collection were brought outside to the lawn along Court Place, and visitors could enjoy demonstrations of carpentry, metalsmithing, and fiber arts. William McMillen, Richmond Town’s former Head of Restoration, fondly recalls attending this event as a child, and seeing it grow as the village, itself, expanded. McMillen’s father, Loring, was Staten Island’s borough historian, and a driving force behind the creation of what was then known as the Richmondtown Restoration, and today we are proud to offer many of the same old favorites—and some new features—as we continue this delightful tradition!

The village is alive with the smell of fresh bread baking in the kitchen of the historic Guyon-Lake-Tysen farmhouse. Enjoy hearty soup served in the rear-yard of the Tavern. Visit with the tinsmith, leather-worker, carpenter, blacksmith and basket-maker to discover how household items were made in the 18th and 19th centuries. Weavers, quilters, and tailors complete the image of a county seat from centuries passed.

This event is part of Archtober, a monthlong celebration of architecture and design in New York City.

Presented in partnership with Konfederasyon Nasyonal Vodouyizan Ayisyen (K.N.V.A)

The final event of the 2018 season is our beloved Halloween Harvest Festival, which, this year, is inspired by Fet Gede, the Haitian Festival of the Ancestors. Vibrant cultural performance and activities will be provided by the New York chapter of Konfederasyon Nasyonal Vodouyizan Ayisyen (K.N.V.A), including a Gede song workshop, card readings, mini altars in the landscape honoring aspects of the Gede pantheon, and a procession culminating in a special dance and drum performance.

Join us also for our Socrates Halloween traditions: spooky costume- and art-making, fantastical face-painting with Agostino Arts, Urban Shaman Mama Donna’s harvest animal blessings for your pets, and of course, our annual Canine Costume Contest with fun prizes and local judges, including Château le Woof and Friends with Four Paws!

*Pumpkin Flotilla Guidelines:

Get a pumpkin: Bring a pumpkin that weighs about 8 pounds after it’s carved – that’s approximately the size of a soccer ball. Mini or extra-large pumpkins cannot be accepted for the flotilla.

Get creative: All pumpkins must come with tops and be gutted and carved at home. Jack-o’-lanterns with artificial decorations, such as paint, glitter, marker, food dye, paper, plastic, light bulbs, candles, or floats cannot be accepted for the flotilla. A light and floating device will be provided when you register your jack-o’-lantern at the event.

Drop off your pumpkin: We will have a designated drop-off area near the Dana Discovery Center between 4:00 pm and 5:45 pm. Space in the flotilla is limited to 50 pumpkins and is first come, first served. Please make sure your creation meets all the requirements.

Watch the Harlem Meer get spooky! Once the activities are finished at twilight (about 6:30 pm), find a spot along the edge of the Harlem Meer and watch as the jack-o’-lanterns float by in New York’s largest pumpkin flotilla!

Please note: Pumpkins in our flotilla cannot be returned. Thank you for your contribution to our event.

Members can register in advance for the pumpkin flotilla with their membership number. Please bring your membership ID to the pumpkin flotilla drop off at the event. ** One pumpkin per household.

Be transported back in time and celebrate your local history!

This year marks the 242nd anniversary of the Battle of Fort Washington, a key event during the Revolutionary War.

The Brigade of the American Revolution will perform and lead drills. Come to watch a blacksmith demonstration, listen to live 18th-century music, make arts and crafts, and play games from the revolutionary period. Tour the battle scene with a tour guide dressed as heroine Margaret Corbin.

Prizes will be offered for the most authentic costumes!
