The expressive choreography, including an excerpt of work by world-renowned choreographer José Limón, contains vital themes that are relevant, mindful, witty, and fun, accompanied with live and recorded music.

Preceding the concert, dancers will also rove the landscape for “Dancing the Art,” creating movement studies based on sculptures in the Nari Ward exhibition. The ensemble is directed by Alice Teirstein, with Music Director William Catanzaro.

The Hustler
Nominated for 9 Oscars, this dark and gritty tale of pool hall sharks won for Cinematography and Art Direction. Fast Eddie (Paul Newman) is a hungry, small-time upstart with dreams of beating the unbeatable Minnesota Fats (Jackie Gleason), a living legend and the reigning champion of major league pool. Eddie has a lot to learn, but the lessons come with a price. George C. Scott, as a shady big-time gambler, refused his nomination for Best Supporting Actor, but Gleason gladly accepted his. Newman won an Oscar of his own years later when he played Fast Eddie again in The Color of Money. (1961) 134 MIN. (NR) (FOX)

The Challenge (Qatar/France/Italy)
Directed by Yuri Ancarani; 2016, 65 mins.

Pre-screening and events begin at 7:00 p.m. Movie begins at sundown (around 8:30 p.m.).

If you have it, spend it: Italian artist Yuri Ancarani’s visually striking documentary enters the surreal world of wealthy Qatari sheikhs who moonlight as amateur falconers, with no expenses spared along the way. The Challenge follows these men through the rituals that define their lives: perilously racing blacked-out SUVs up and down sand dunes; sharing communal meals; taking their Ferraris out for a spin with their pet cheetahs riding shotgun; and much more. Ancarani’s film is a sly meditation on the collective pursuit of idiosyncratic desires.

Programmed by Rooftop Films.

All That Jazz
“It’s showtime, folks!” Joe Gideon (Roy Scheider) is a workaholic Broadway director and choreographer. He is also a womanizer, a heavy drinker, a chain smoker and frequent pill popper. Bob Fosse directed this jazzy, thinly-veiled autobiographical film showcasing his very own personal demons. Not surprisingly, Gideon (like Fosse) eventually finds himself in a life-or-death struggle as he goes under the knife for open-heart surgery. Nominated for nine Oscars, All That Jazz won four (Score, Art Direction, Costumes, Editing). If you can survive it, there’s no business-like show business. (1979) 123 MIN. (R) (FOX)

The Silence Before Bach (Spain)
Directed by Pere Portabella; 2007, 102 mins.

Prescreening & Events begin at 7pm. Movie begins at sundown (Around 8:30pm)

This fascinating, charming hybrid of documentary and drama from Spain’s legendary Surrealist circles the theme of the transformational power of great music. The screen is filled with a subway car of passionate cello-playing musicians; then we’re accompanying a guide who gives tours of Leipzig dressed in full Bach regalia; followed by Mendelssohn’s discovery of sheet music for the “St. Matthew Passion” used as wrapping paper for a chunk of raw meat. By turns funny and serious, poignant, sexy, and refreshing – a nearly unclassifiable film, filled with indelible imagery.

North by Northwest
Alfred Hitchcock was at the top of his game when he directed Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint in this sophisticated cross-country thriller. Bachelor Grant is a dapper, Madison Avenue ad executive who becomes a victim of mistaken identity and is soon on the run for his life. Saint’s a mysterious, blonde seductress who seems more than eager to help out the handsome fugitive. Classic set pieces play out at the U.N. headquarters and in an Indiana cornfield. The breathless climax finds Grant and Saint dangling from a presidential profile on Mt. Rushmore. (1959) 136 MIN. (NR) (WARNER BROS.)

Dirty Dancing
In the summer of ’63, seventeen-year-old Baby (Jennifer Grey) goes on vacation with her family to a resort in the Catskills. Baby is bored until she meets hunky professional dancer Johnny (Patrick Swayze). Before you can say “Dancing with the Stars,” he is teaching her some pelvic moves and she is taking the place of his dance partner who has turned up pregnant. Needless to say, Baby’s daddy does not approve of the couple’s suggestive gyrations. North Carolina and Virginia stand in for the upstate New York locations in this surprise hit. Like Baby, you’ll have the time of your life. (1987) 100 MIN. (PG-13) (LIONSGATE)

Bad Hair (Pelo Malo) (Venezuela/Peru/Argentina/Gernmany)
Directed by Mariana Rondón; 2013, 93 mins.

Prescreening and events begin at 7:00 p.m. Movie begins at sundown (around 8:30 p.m.)

A touching and humorous coming-of-gender story, Bad Hair chronicles the life of nine-year-old Junior, living in a bustling Caracas tenement with his widowed mother. Junior fears he has pelo malo – bad hair – and for his school photo, he wants to iron his stubbornly curly mane to resemble his pop star idols. His mother has serious misgivings; she suspects her son is gay. Rondón grounds her film in the cultural realities of working-class Venezuela – and, by dint of two remarkable performances, finds warmth and humor between mother and son, even as the uncertainties of pre-adolescence threaten to pull them apart.

<![CDATA[It’s Happening! Celebrating 50 Years of Public Art in NYC Parks]]> http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2017/10/21/its-happening-celebrating-50-years-of-public-art-in-nyc-parks http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2017/10/21/its-happening-celebrating-50-years-of-public-art-in-nyc-parks Date: October 21, 2017

This year NYC Parks is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its Art in the Parks program. Since its creation in 1967, Art in the Parks has featured over 2,000 works of art. On Saturday, October 21, NYC Parks is transforming Central Park into a stage, museum, and art studio for a free day of public art to celebrate this milestone. Art lovers, families, and park-goers will be delighted by free art exhibits, performances, and hands-on art workshops in Central Park’s beautiful East Pinetum field.

As NYC Parks’ public art program took shape in the 1960s, artistic events called “happenings” popped up in parks across the city. Blurring the line between art and everyday life, these fleeting performances combined sculpture, music, theater, dance, and poetry. They varied in size and sophistication, but always relied on audience participation.

NYC Parks’ 50th anniversary celebration "It’s Happening!" captures the same creative spirit with dynamic public artworks, hands-on workshops, and performances.
