This fall, a classic New York City block party becomes the enchanted setting where fairies work their mischief in Shakespeare’s beloved play A Midsummer Night's Dream.

Acclaimed director Jenny Koons takes you to the royal wedding of Theseus and Hippolyta, where a celebratory play is being rehearsed. But the real drama is unfolding in the concrete jungle of fairy King Oberon. There, four young New Yorkers discover the course of true love runs anything but smooth, as supernatural sprites and the lovable Puck conspire to reveal what fools we mortals be, and draw us all into the collective dream of romance and merriment.

Please note: RSVP is required. Please RSVP to hold your spot by emailing benny.adorno@parks.nyc.gov.

About the PublicTheater Mobile Unit
The Public Theater’s Mobile Unit is a reinvention of Joseph Papp’s “Mobile Theater,” which began in 1957. Papp’s original touring company evolved into the New York Shakespeare Festival, and ultimately became The Public Theater. All of it was built on a simple idea: Culture belongs to everyone. This idea remains at the heart of The Public Theater’s work to this day. And our Mobile Unit still takes this mission out to the communities across New York City, providing free performances to all. The Mobile Unit presents free Shakespeare to prisons, homeless shelters, and community centers throughout New York’s boroughs. Over the years, the Mobile Unit has served thousands of audiences with critically acclaimed productions. In addition to the community tour, each Mobile Unit show “sits down” at The Public Theater’s Astor Place home to perform for Public audiences and community organizations from all over the city.

Presented in partnership with Konfederasyon Nasyonal Vodouyizan Ayisyen (K.N.V.A)

The final event of the 2018 season is our beloved Halloween Harvest Festival, which, this year, is inspired by Fet Gede, the Haitian Festival of the Ancestors. Vibrant cultural performance and activities will be provided by the New York chapter of Konfederasyon Nasyonal Vodouyizan Ayisyen (K.N.V.A), including a Gede song workshop, card readings, mini altars in the landscape honoring aspects of the Gede pantheon, and a procession culminating in a special dance and drum performance.

Join us also for our Socrates Halloween traditions: spooky costume- and art-making, fantastical face-painting with Agostino Arts, Urban Shaman Mama Donna’s harvest animal blessings for your pets, and of course, our annual Canine Costume Contest with fun prizes and local judges, including Château le Woof and Friends with Four Paws!

*Pumpkin Flotilla Guidelines:

Get a pumpkin: Bring a pumpkin that weighs about 8 pounds after it’s carved – that’s approximately the size of a soccer ball. Mini or extra-large pumpkins cannot be accepted for the flotilla.

Get creative: All pumpkins must come with tops and be gutted and carved at home. Jack-o’-lanterns with artificial decorations, such as paint, glitter, marker, food dye, paper, plastic, light bulbs, candles, or floats cannot be accepted for the flotilla. A light and floating device will be provided when you register your jack-o’-lantern at the event.

Drop off your pumpkin: We will have a designated drop-off area near the Dana Discovery Center between 4:00 pm and 5:45 pm. Space in the flotilla is limited to 50 pumpkins and is first come, first served. Please make sure your creation meets all the requirements.

Watch the Harlem Meer get spooky! Once the activities are finished at twilight (about 6:30 pm), find a spot along the edge of the Harlem Meer and watch as the jack-o’-lanterns float by in New York’s largest pumpkin flotilla!

Please note: Pumpkins in our flotilla cannot be returned. Thank you for your contribution to our event.

Members can register in advance for the pumpkin flotilla with their membership number. Please bring your membership ID to the pumpkin flotilla drop off at the event. ** One pumpkin per household.
