This photo exhibit is the result of a "people to people" cultural exchange in which the artist participated last October. The artist and group visited Havana, Cienfuegos, and Trinidad. Music and art were everywhere and the crumbling Spanish architecture made for some interesting images. The various images convey his impressions of Cuba and the Cuban people in an apolitical manner. The recent presidential visit and talk of lifting the embargo lend context to the images.

Now in its fourth season, Norte Maar’s Dance at Socrates offers a residency and performance program that brings New York-based choreographers and their dancers to Socrates’ unique waterfront environment. Three weeklong residencies will each culminate in a free dance performance on an outdoor stage within the grove of trees. Throughout their creative process, participating choreographers will be in full view of the public, so that visitors can witness cutting-edge dance and movement in the making, then experience fully produced performances every Saturday.

Bring a blanket, chair and friends and enjoy movies outdoors.

The second film of director Martin Ritt with both Paul Newmanand Sidney Poitier, it's set in a city that has long been a haven for black musicians eager to escape the racism of the U.S. Newman is Ram Bowen, a trombone player who makes his living in a jazz group, which also includes tenor man Eddie Cook (Sidney Poitier), while studying music and aspiring to a career as a "serious" composer. Eddie stays in Paris to bask in the respect that its people feel for his music, a respect rarely accorded him in the States. A pair of tourists, Connie Lampson (Diahann Carroll) and Lillian Corning (Joanne Woodward) arrive in the city for a two-week vacation, and the two musicians lose no time in hooking up. Soon both relationships take a serious turn and the musicians are forced to make some important decisions about the possibility of returning to their native soil.

In case of rain the event moves indoors.

Marking Socrates Sculpture Park’s 30th anniversary this year, the institution presents Landmark, a series of artist commissions and projects that transforms the land both physically and symbolically. Once an industrial landfill and illegal dumping ground, Socrates has transformed itself into New York City’s preeminent sculpture park and social space for public art, community engagement and urban discovery. Landmark directly addresses the idea of place as intimately tied to social and ecological structures, to maintenance and stewardship, and to evolution over time.

Landmark features eight different artist projects including a newly commissioned major earthwork by Meg Webster. Additional artists in the exhibition include Abigail DeVille, Brendan Fernandes, Cary Leibowitz, Jessica Segall, Casey Tang, the curatorial collective ARTPORT_making waves, and a Broadway Billboard by Hank Willis Thomas. Since its inception in 1986, Socrates and the surrounding area of Queens, New York has rapidly changed. Whether by engaging directly with the land or commenting on the neighborhood’s cultural and economic shifts, each artwork in Landmark reflects historic transformations in the making.

Visual artist Tatiana Arocha's SANCTUARIES is a series of wall-scale intricately-layered reinventions of natural Colombian landscape, hand-constructed on digital canvases, printed, and arrayed into immersive murals. Both a refuge and warning, SANCTUARIES uses a combination of natural specimens, human artifacts, and modern technologies to evoke a rainforest that is as lush as it is imperiled.

In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City—a place where history is made, not merely recorded.

As a historic house museum run by NYC Parks, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together. In keeping with that theme, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled Windows on the City: Looking Out at Gracie’s New York. The installation consists of previously and newly acquired works, all from the original Gracie Mansion period, which have been curated to create a more historically accurate picture of life in New York City during the time of Gracie Mansion’s construction.

Bring a blanket, chair and a friend and enjoy outdoor movies FREE! Some seats will be provided.

Devil-may-care navy pilot Pete Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is sent to Miramar Naval Air Station for advanced training. Here he vies with Tom Kasansky (Val Kilmer) for the coveted "Top Gun" award. When not so occupied, Mitchell carries on a romance with civilian consultant Charlotte Blackwood (Kelly McGillis). Shaken up by the death of a friend, Mitchell loses the Top Gun honor to Kasansky. Worried that he may have lost his nerve, Mitchell is given a chance to redeem himself during a tense international crisis involving a crippled US vessel and a flock of predatory enemy planes. The story wasn't new in 1986, but Top Gun scored with audiences on the strength of its visuals, especially the vertigo-inducing aerial sequences. An Academy Award went to the Giogio Moroder-Tom Whitlock song "Take My Breath Away."

In case of rain, the screening moves indoors.

Socrates Sculpture Park and Film Forum, in collaboration with Rooftop Films, present this annual international film festival, which features a different country or culture each Wednesday evening between July 6 and August 24. This year’s series examines the theme of The River, either literally or metaphorically, as we celebrate our 30th anniversary and the Landmark exhibition.

Each week throughout the summer series, the film is paired with live international music and local food vendors representing each week’s featured country of origin, making for a diverse array of films, food, and music. This program invites visitors to picnic on the grass, see musical and dance performances, enjoy the cool waterfront breeze as the sun sets over the Manhattan skyline, and watch exceptional international films on an outdoor screen.

About Suzhou River
Chinese filmmaker Lou Ye calls Shanghai’s mysterious Suzhou River “the blood of the city”, as it cuts through the seedy nightclubs, abandoned warehouses, and criminal underworld of this romantic film noir. The story of a motorcycle messenger who is hired to kidnap an alluring young woman with whom he falls in love, Suzhou River has echoes of Vertigo, riffing on its themes of voyeurism, mistaken identity, and sexual obsession.

The Lenape Gallery at the Conference House Park Visitor Center will open a unique exhibition, featuring artist Randi Ehrhart.

Regeneration is a three-dimensional installation featuring hundreds of entomology-based miniature sculpted works constructed from dead branches, dried leaves, and other barren, hollow, empty, and vacant organic material found primarily in the Northeast United States.

Born in New York City, Ehrhart studied art at Queens College in Flushing, New York, and worked as a professional bench jeweler in the Bowery. A widow, mother of three grown sons and a recent grandmother, Ehrhart has dedicated her life and work by establishing herself as a conduit connecting nature and art in a fresh new light.

The Lenape Gallery is pleased to launch Regeneration, the first solo exhibit by Randi Ehrhart. This exhibition beautifully combines her innovative work with fascinating aspects of her life and process. The exhibit will be extended through 9-4-16.

Bring a blanket, chair and friends and enjoy movies outdoors.

Both a classic movie for kids and a remarkable portrait of childhood, E.T. is a sci-fi adventure that captures thatstrange moment in youth when the world is a place of mysterious possibilities (some wonderful, some awful), and theuniverse seems somehow separate from the one inhabited by grown-ups. Henry Thomas plays Elliott, a young boy livingwith his single mother (Dee Wallace), his older brother Michael (Robert MacNaughton), and his younger sister Gertie(Drew Barrymore). In 2002, Steven Spielberg re-released E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial in a revised edition, with several deleted scenes restored and digitally refurbished special effects.

Bring a blanket, chair and friends and enjoy movies outdoors.

High Society is a glossy Technicolor-and-VistaVision musical remake of Philip Barry's The Philadelphia Story (1940), decked out with million-watt star power and a Cole Porter score. Set amongst the rich and famous in Newport, RI, the story revolves around the wedding plans of socialite Tracy Lord (Grace Kelly). Tracy is all set to marry stuffy George Kittridge (John Lund), while magazine writer Mike Connor (Frank Sinatra) and photographer Liz Imbrie (Celeste Holm) intend to cover the ceremony. Meanwhile, Tracy's ex-husband C.K. Dexter-Haven (Bing Crosby) also comes calling, ostensibly to the attend the annual Newport Jazz Festival, but actually for the purpose of winning Tracy back. In the course of events, Mike falls in love with Tracy, and she with him. The Jazz Festival subplot allows scriptwriter John Patrick to bring Louis Armstrong into the proceedings, much to the delight of anyone who cares anything about music. The Cole Porter tunes include the Crosby-Sinatra duet "Well, Did You Evah?," the Crosby-Armstrong teaming "Now You Has Jazz," the Kelly-Crosby romantic ballad "True Love," and the Sinatra solo "You're Sensational."

<![CDATA[Landmark at Socrates Sculpture Park]]> http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2016/08/17/landmark http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2016/08/17/landmark Date: August 17, 2016
