Socrates Sculpture Park and Film Forum, in collaboration with Rooftop Films, present this annual international film festival, which features a different country or culture each Wednesday evening between July 6 and August 24. This year’s series examines the theme of The River, either literally or metaphorically, as we celebrate our 30th anniversary and the Landmark exhibition.

Each week throughout the summer series, the film is paired with live international music and local food vendors representing each week’s featured country of origin, making for a diverse array of films, food, and music. This program invites visitors to picnic on the grass, see musical and dance performances, enjoy the cool waterfront breeze as the sun sets over the Manhattan skyline, and watch exceptional international films on an outdoor screen.

About Suzhou River
Chinese filmmaker Lou Ye calls Shanghai’s mysterious Suzhou River “the blood of the city”, as it cuts through the seedy nightclubs, abandoned warehouses, and criminal underworld of this romantic film noir. The story of a motorcycle messenger who is hired to kidnap an alluring young woman with whom he falls in love, Suzhou River has echoes of Vertigo, riffing on its themes of voyeurism, mistaken identity, and sexual obsession.

Marking Socrates Sculpture Park’s 30th anniversary this year, the institution presents Landmark, a series of artist commissions and projects that transforms the land both physically and symbolically. Once an industrial landfill and illegal dumping ground, Socrates has transformed itself into New York City’s preeminent sculpture park and social space for public art, community engagement and urban discovery. Landmark directly addresses the idea of place as intimately tied to social and ecological structures, to maintenance and stewardship, and to evolution over time.

Landmark features eight different artist projects including a newly commissioned major earthwork by Meg Webster. Additional artists in the exhibition include Abigail DeVille, Brendan Fernandes, Cary Leibowitz, Jessica Segall, Casey Tang, the curatorial collective ARTPORT_making waves, and a Broadway Billboard by Hank Willis Thomas. Since its inception in 1986, Socrates and the surrounding area of Queens, New York has rapidly changed. Whether by engaging directly with the land or commenting on the neighborhood’s cultural and economic shifts, each artwork in Landmark reflects historic transformations in the making.

Separated by events they could not control but bound by love and by music, three people search for what they lost and what will make their lives complete - each other. Keri Russell (waitress, Felicity), Johathan Rhys Meyers (The Tudors), and Freddie Highmore (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Finding Neverland) star with Robin Williams in this amazing, hear-warming tale of two very different musicians who fall in love only to be torn apart, both unaware that they have a child, a musical prodigy who is trying to find them as much as they are trying to find each other, a boy destined for greatness as the rising young star August Rush.

All performances are fun for the whole family. Bring a blanket or low chair and picnic fare, and enjoy Shakespeare in the open air. This year's program includes: Julius Caesar (Sunday, August 7) and As You Like It (Sunday, August 14).

Kids & The Classics—a children’s interactive workshop—is offered prior to each performance. Designed for children ages four to 14, this program offers children a chance to interact with the actors and theatrical text by previewing characters and situations, and by making comparisons to contemporary life through theater games. The children’s program is a 45-minute workshop that begins one hour before each performance.

Join Inna Guzenfeld to discover how ferries shaped South Brooklyn and why they’re still an important and growing part of our transportation infrastructure.

For over 200 years, ferries have been deeply intertwined with Brooklyn’s development as a village, town, and city. This tour will chart the rise of New York’s ferry system in the 19th century and it’s influence on the development of Brooklyn Heights as a residential and commercial district.

About Aguirre, the Wrath of God
This dreamlike evocation of the real-life quest for the lost city of gold, El Dorado, established Werner Herzog as a filmmaker of unique vision and reckless eccentricity. It also inaugurated his legendary partnership with volcanic actor Klaus Kinski, who plays the title role. Thomas Mauch’s award-winning photography – his eight-man crew nearly lost their equipment in rapids during a grueling six-week shoot in the Peruvian jungle – ravishes the eye as well as creating another world, reinforced by the striking music of Florian Fricke and his ‘krautrock’ group Popol Vuh. Directed by Werner Herzog; 1972, 94 mins.

About Embrace of the Serpent
Set in the Colombian Amazon, the Oscar-nominated Embrace of the Serpent tells the story of a shaman encountering two Western explorers who search for rare botanical species in this most remote and lush of South American jungles. The shaman who guides both men, Karamakate, is no naif – he’s tough-minded and astute about the ravages brought by the white man’s colonialism, his missionaries, and rapacious rubber industry. Based on the diaries of two Westerners who travelled in the region, one in 1909, the other 30 years later.
