For experienced* high school rowers, ages 14 to 18, this summer-long competitive camp meets five days a week, Mondays through Fridays, from 7:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m., on the historic Harlem River.

Athletes train with experienced coaches from a variety of competitive collegiate rowing programs. Rowing is a great way to distinguish your child’s college resume, and our seasoned coaches are always available as a resource to discuss rowing at a higher level. We work on enhancing rowing skills and technique in both sweep and sculling boats.

Along with rigorous training, participants compete in select regattas throughout the summer season. For those who are considering rowing at the collegiate level, this camp is the perfect addition to develop their talent.

*Previous rowing experience is defined as at least 10 months of previous rowing experience and/or race experience in at least four high school-level regattas. All participants are selected for this program at our coaches discretion.

The rows take place in five-person wooden rowboats that Village Community Boathouse builds onsite. The rows last, depending on river conditions and rower level experience, between one and three hours. Most of these rows have mixed crews with those that have never been on the river before and some old hands. The Village Community Boathouse is offering free public rowing on Prospect Park Lake this summer.

Rowing is a beautifully simple, healthy, and empowering sport, and the ample waters of the lake are an ideal place to pursue its pleasures.

Community rowing is free and open to all; no experience or reservations necessary. Sessions run from noon until 4:00 p.m. on Saturdays from June 10 to August 26. Boats are launched from the ramp on Well House Drive in the southwest corner of the lake. The temporary boathouse–two shipping containers–is located just across from the ramp.

Who Can Participate
Community rowing is open to all, although some physical dexterity is required to get in and out of the boats. The focus of the program is recreation in a safe and respectful environment. Each participant must sign a waiver; kids and teens younger than 18 must be escorted by a parent. Life jackets are provided—and must be worn!

What You'll Row
We use a diverse fleet of traditional wooden rowing boats, built by volunteers and similar in shape and appearance to those used in the early days of park rowing.

How the Villiage Community Boathouse is Funded
We are a nonprofit organization entirely run by volunteers. While no commitment is required from those who row with us, our facilities, boats and equipment require regular upkeep and repair. The park is surrounded by a large and diverse population that needs more access to on-water recreation.Your donations make our program possible. If you're looking to volunteer, please email volunteers@vcb.nyc.

Join Corona Youth Music Project (CYMP or Núcleo Corona) for their debut concert at Socrates!

Started in 2010, CYMP is a tuition-free music education program that promotes social inclusion in NYC. It follows the philosophy of El Sistema, a movement of social action through music that started in Venezuela in 1975: every child has the right to excel as a member of a musical ensemble.

The project emphasizes four basic values: striving for artistic excellence is a tool to learn discipline and commitment; work in a safe and joyful environment engages deeper learning; music has to be accessible without any discrimination, and participating in large ensembles such as symphony orchestras and choirs enables a stronger sense of community, pride and solidarity.

Join the Village Community Boathouse for Community Rowing in traditional Whitehall gigs, captained by experienced New York Harbor coxswains. The Village Community Boathouse offers free community rowing on Sundays at noon and on Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m., through November 12, 2017.

Community rowing is free and open to all; no experience or reservations necessary, and lifejackets will be provided. Children (under 18) must be accompanied by a parent. All participants must sign a liability waiver.

Please note: It is very important that you arrive between noon and 12:30 p.m., as the Village Community Boathouse pair their boats, coxswains, and rowers by 12:30. Boats leave right after for the afternoon. In some cases, the Villiage Community Boathouse will have additional boats leaving at a later time but the chances to get out on a boat then are much slimmer. Please check the Villiage Community Boathouse's social media feeds on Facebook or Twitter for possible last-minute changes due to weather or other circumstances. Or, call (212) 229-2059.

About Free Community Rowing
The Community Rows are free sessions that include a basic introduction to rowing for first timers (safety orientation, rowing technique, and terminology) and of course plenty of actual rowing on the Hudson River. The rows take place in five-person wooden rowboats that Village Community Boathouse builds onsite. The rows last, depending on river conditions and rower level experience, between one and three hours. Most of these rows have mixed crews with those that have never been on the river before and some old hands. Visit the Village Community Boathouse's website for more information and photos!

About Village Community Boathouse
Village Community Boathouse is a 501(c)(3) non-profit run by volunteers, based on the south side of Pier 40 on the Hudson River. While our community rowing programs are free, our facilities, boats and equipment require regular upkeep and repair. Your donations make our program possible.

The Challenge (Qatar/France/Italy)
Directed by Yuri Ancarani; 2016, 65 mins.

Pre-screening and events begin at 7:00 p.m. Movie begins at sundown (around 8:30 p.m.).

If you have it, spend it: Italian artist Yuri Ancarani’s visually striking documentary enters the surreal world of wealthy Qatari sheikhs who moonlight as amateur falconers, with no expenses spared along the way. The Challenge follows these men through the rituals that define their lives: perilously racing blacked-out SUVs up and down sand dunes; sharing communal meals; taking their Ferraris out for a spin with their pet cheetahs riding shotgun; and much more. Ancarani’s film is a sly meditation on the collective pursuit of idiosyncratic desires.

Programmed by Rooftop Films.

Unlike most other sports, rowing can be learned at any age and fitness level! Taking an introductory class with Row New York is a great way to get fit, have fun, and enjoy the beauty of the river against the backdrop of the city. It’s a truly unique experience! Learn to Row classes take place in the spring, summer, and fall at the Peter Jay Sharp Boathouse on the Harlem River in Northern Manhattan.

Learn-to-Row 1: Intensive Learn-to-Row session, $130. All classes take place on Saturdays from 9:00am-1:00pm.

On this one-day program, you can:

  • Learn basics of sweep rowing.
  • Develop working knowledge of the sport including vocabulary and equipment.
  • Learn proper rowing technique on land and on the water.
  • Advance to water on a stable rowing barge to develop on-water technique.

This session prepares participants for our Level 2 course, in which advanced rowing skills are acquired on the water. Questions about Learn-to-Row? Visit Row New York's Q&A page.

From the taverns of London to the palaces of Vienna, Shakespeare invites us into the personal trials and triumphs of the common people and their all-too-human leaders. Hip to Hip’s 11th season of “Free Shakespeare in the Parks” features madcap capers and epic battles, mistaken identity, and unexpected marriages, and a vibrant cast of unforgettable characters, including the iconic Falstaff.

Kids & the Classics is the companion piece to Hip to Hip’s program of “Free Shakespeare in the Parks.” This free interactive workshop is offered 30 minutes before every performance, and is designed for children ages 4 to 12. It gives children a chance to interact with the text by previewing the characters and situations, and creating links between the text and their own lives through theatre games and close reading of text.

The Silence Before Bach (Spain)
Directed by Pere Portabella; 2007, 102 mins.

Prescreening & Events begin at 7pm. Movie begins at sundown (Around 8:30pm)

This fascinating, charming hybrid of documentary and drama from Spain’s legendary Surrealist circles the theme of the transformational power of great music. The screen is filled with a subway car of passionate cello-playing musicians; then we’re accompanying a guide who gives tours of Leipzig dressed in full Bach regalia; followed by Mendelssohn’s discovery of sheet music for the “St. Matthew Passion” used as wrapping paper for a chunk of raw meat. By turns funny and serious, poignant, sexy, and refreshing – a nearly unclassifiable film, filled with indelible imagery.
