Fishing in New York City? You bet! We provide the rods, reels, bait, and instruction for participants to drop in a line and relax, or engage with environmental educators on such topics as water quality, fish biology, and more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I fish for more than 30 minutes?

In order to accommodate the growing demand for this program, we have limited each participant to a 30 minute session. We believe that this is a meaningful and productive time allowance to fish that will enable even more New Yorkers to connect with the Hudson River!

Why can’t my organized group come to Big City Fishing?

Big City Fishing is open to the public and therefore we cannot accommodate large groups fishing. If you are a leader of an organized group, we invite you to participate in one of the many scheduled educational programs throughout the park. Learn more about our summer camp programs here.

Can I sign up in advance for a 30 time slot?

Sign-ups cannot be made in advance for Big City Fishing. After the program begins, you can speak to one of our Park Educators to sign up for a fishing pole.

Will I catch a fish?

We hope so! Fishing is a sport that takes a lot of patience and sometimes luck. If you don’t catch a fish we encourage you to come back and try again at another program!

I’m on the Pier but can’t find Big City Fishing, where is it?

Look for our large blue tent. Park Educators will be set up along the railing with a large “Big City Fishing” sign on the tent and a row of fishing poles.

What happens if it rains?

We want your Big City Fishing experience to be enjoyable and safe therefore inclement weather can sometimes create the need to cancel Big City Fishing. If we do cancel Big City Fishing, we will post it both on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

What lives in the Hudson River?

Hudson River Park includes 400 acres of an estuarine sanctuary, protected waters in our Park! There are over 70 species of fish that call the Hudson River home, including striped bass, American eels, and lined seahorses! You can learn more about our ecosystem here.

What time should I arrive to sign up for a fishing pole?

Due to high demand, we cannot guarantee a time slot for Big City Fishing. It is difficult to tell exactly how busy each program will be, but we recommend signing up for a fishing pole during the first half of the program to increase your chances of participation.

Start time: 11:00 am

End time: 3:00 pm

The Tottenville Historical Society invites you to visit Alice’s Garden, an arrangement of rare and unique architectural terra cotta ornaments. The garden is dedicated to the artisans of the Atlantic Terra Cotta Co., Tottenville, who crafted them more than 100 years ago.

The sculptured pieces, displayed with native plants in a natural landscape on the side lawn of the Biddle House, 70 Satterlee Street, exemplify the artistry of the firm’s talented but, for the most part, anonymous workforce.

Alice’s Garden is free and open to the public during regular park hours. Additional information about the Atlantic Terra Cotta Co. is available inside the H.H. Biddle House (open Saturdays from noon to 3:00 p.m. or by appointment)

The garden is made available with funding support from The Staten Island Foundation, The Nicotra Foundation, and members of the Tottenville Historical Society.

Village Community Boathouse is offering free rowing in traditional, handmade wooden rowboats Fridays this summer from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. You will get 25 minutes to explore beautiful Van Cortlandt Park Lake.

Rowing is a beautifully simple, healthy, and empowering sport, and the waters of the lake are an ideal place to pursue its pleasures.

Who can particpate
Community rowing is open to all, although some physical dexterity is required to get in and out of the boats. The focus of the program is recreation in a safe and respectful environment. Each adult must sign a waiver; children must be accompanied by a parent. Life jackets are provided—and must be worn!

Volunteers are greatly appreciated! To help with set up, meet at the container in the parking lot south of the lake at 4pm. Volunteers get a chance to learn to use our sleek and speedy sliding-seat boat.

Cost
It’s free. Village Community Boathouse is a nonprofit organization entirely run by volunteers. While no commitment is required from those who row with us, our facilities, boats and equipment require regular upkeep and repair. Please consider making a donation of money or time to make our programs possible.

About Village Community Boathouse
Village Community Boathouse is a nonprofit based on Pier 40 at the west end of Houston Street. At the boathouse we build, maintain, and row a fleet of traditional wooden rowboats. Our rowing program on the Hudson uses Whitehall Gigs, 25 foot long boats for four rowers which can handle the conditions and traffic of the harbor. We have programs using the smaller boats in Prospect Park in Brooklyn and Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. The boats are traditional handmade wooden rowboats of a variety of designs. Some of them were built at Pier 40 as part of our Community Boatbuilding program.

Village Community Boathouse is offering free Community Rowing in our fleet of Whitehall Gigs. No experience is necessary though rowing does require some physical dexterity.

Community Rowing events are free sessions that include a basic introduction to rowing for first timers (safety orientation, rowing technique, and terminology) and of course plenty of actual rowing on the Hudson River. The rows take place in five-person wooden rowboats that Village Community Boathouse builds on site.

Please note: The rows last, depending on river conditions and crew experience, between one and three hours. Please arrive on-time as the crews will be assigned before 1:00 p.m. Bring extra water, a hat, and sunscreen as you will be rowing outdoors in the hot sun. Rowing is weather dependent and will be canceled for high winds, rain, or thunderstorms. All participants must sign a waiver and be able to climb a ladder.

Fishing in New York City? You bet! We provide the rods, reels, bait, and instruction for participants to drop in a line and relax, or engage with environmental educators on such topics such as water quality, fish biology, and more.
