Marking Socrates Sculpture Park’s 30th anniversary this year, the institution presents Landmark, a series of artist commissions and projects that transforms the land both physically and symbolically. Once an industrial landfill and illegal dumping ground, Socrates has transformed itself into New York City’s preeminent sculpture park and social space for public art, community engagement and urban discovery. Landmark directly addresses the idea of place as intimately tied to social and ecological structures, to maintenance and stewardship, and to evolution over time.

Landmark features eight different artist projects including a newly commissioned major earthwork by Meg Webster. Additional artists in the exhibition include Abigail DeVille, Brendan Fernandes, Cary Leibowitz, Jessica Segall, Casey Tang, the curatorial collective ARTPORT_making waves, and a Broadway Billboard by Hank Willis Thomas. Since its inception in 1986, Socrates and the surrounding area of Queens, New York has rapidly changed. Whether by engaging directly with the land or commenting on the neighborhood’s cultural and economic shifts, each artwork in Landmark reflects historic transformations in the making.

Kick off the weekend with some local sounds at this monthly musical get-happy hour.

Every month Summer on the Hudson features a different artist to get your weekend started right. Meet up in West Harlem Piers Park with friends on the last Friday of the month for great music, fresh air, and beautiful scenery.

May 27
Elle Winston - This Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter's sound might best be described as a meeting of folk-legend James Taylor and powerful songstress Jill Scott. Her music is a deep mixture of jazz-inspired soul music, with hints of blues and rock—true American roots music.

June 24
Tattoo Money - Downtown stories fuse indie rock sounds with an 808

July 29
Consumata Sonidera - This performance features heavy tropical rhythms, sweet horn melodies, and vibrant percussions. Consumata collages a full spectrum of local and global sounds by means of cut-ups.

Aug 26
The Bones of J.R. Jones - "He's a one man band who can hold an audience rapt, rendering the cacophony of a stage full of musicians utterly unnecessary." - Noisey.Vice

See NYC Oyster Project, the upcoming multimedia installation at 99 Plymouth in BBP, on DUMBO’s First Thursday Gallery Walk. First Thursday is a monthly event during which galleries around the neighborhood open their exhibitions for public viewing in the evening.

The opening of NYC Oyster Project takes place on June’s First Thursday, with talks by the artists from 5:00 to 7:00pm. 99 Plymouth will remain open for the rest of the First Thursday event, until 9:00pm. Light refreshments will be served.

Inspired by Brooklyn’s native oyster reefs, NYC Oyster Project will feature color photographs of Colleen Flanigan’s underwater sculptures and an installation of Judith Pleva’s unbound multimedia scrapbook. Flanigan and Pleva’s work illuminates the beauty of marine life as well as the relationships between organisms in New York City’s waterways. This immersive installation examines the kindred associations between organisms and their environment and sheds light on the benevolent influence of public parks and nature reserves on the human psyche. NYC Oyster Project celebrates the improvement to the New York Harbor’s human environment provided by the construction of Brooklyn Bridge Park.

SculptureCenter is pleased to present Meridian (Gold), a temporary public art project by Mika Tajima. The installation will be located in Hunter’s Point South Park in Long Island City and will be on view from June 9 through September 25.

The public is invited to celebrate the project at a Community Day, featuring family activities, refreshments, and remarks by the artist and local elected officials, on Saturday, June 11, from 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Meridian (Gold) is an illuminated plume of water vapor whose color shifts between magenta and pale cyan. The color of the vapor corresponds in real-time to the global sentiment for gold, reflected in the price fluctuation of the commodity. Gold is a peculiar material that derives its value from the social perception of its qualities and collective “moods” toward geopolitical and economic events. The framing structure for Meridian (Gold) is a seating zone that references communal rejuvenation spas and here becomes a site to reflect on the fleeting materiality of contemporary life. The project was selected by participants in Public Process, SculptureCenter’s intensive program for high school students that uses New York City’s rich public art landscape to explore the history and impact of public art and its community influence.

This opening is free and open to the public.

Though born in Baltimore, longtime New Yorker Philip Glass is known one of the city’s iconic musical figures. He will help Make Music New York usher in its second decade by playing from his Etudes for piano at Pier I in Riverside Park, along with nineteen students from New York City public schools, starting at 5:00 p.m.

Glass wrote the Etudes over an extended period (twenty years), originally starting the project to develop his own skills as a pianist. These lovely pieces will form the perfect backdrop to a beautiful twilight in Riverside Park.

Make Music New York, dubbed “the largest music event ever to grace Gotham” (Metro New York), celebrates its 10th year with a cornucopia of free, outdoor public concerts all around the city on Tuesday, June 21, the first day of summer. Since the festival first began in 2007, Make Music New York has become an indispensable part of the city’s cultural life, offering a dazzling array of events in all five boroughs. Wrote Russell Platt of The New Yorker, “...this project has overrun the city with song and sound on the first day of summer, brimming with more than twelve hundred concerts in all imaginable genres.”
