<![CDATA[Autumn Equinox and International Day of Peace Community Potluck]]> http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2018/09/22/autumn-equinox-international-day-of-peace-community-potluck http://www.nycgovparks.org/events/2018/09/22/autumn-equinox-international-day-of-peace-community-potluck Date: September 22, 2018

The garden is hosting an Autumn Equinox community potluck in celebration of International day of Peace, the harvest and the season of balance. International Peace Day was established in 1981 by a U.N resolution, and provides a globally shared date for all humanity to commit to Peace above all differences and to contribute to building a Culture of Peace.”

The September equinox is the autumnal (fall) equinox. The Autumn Equinox marks the middle of harvest, it is a time of equal day and equal night, and for the moment nature is in balance. It is a time to reap what you have sown, of giving thanks for the harvest and the bounty the Earth provides. As leaves turn yellow and fruits and vegetables ripen, most traditional celebrations of the autumnal equinox are associated with harvest. With all the talk about harvest, we are reminded to be grateful for the bounty and abundance in our own lives.

Many autumnal equinox celebrations include discussion among community members of what they have been able to bring to fruition in their own lives and everyone celebrates each other's victories together. This is a time for closure, finishing projects, and taking stock.

During the potluck there will be a Water Ceremony: Waters of adventure, waters of peace, waters of joy, waters of struggle, waters of hope. Those who wish to are asked to bring water from (or symbolizing) a special place they have visited during their recent physical or spiritual journeys. The water will be poured into a common bowl to symbolize our diversity and unity, and to celebrate our coming together in a sharing, loving community. After the water ceremony we will begin our potluck feast.

As the golden sun rises into this time of equal day and equal night, we invoke calmness and balance into our lives. In the spirit of this time of harvest, we will acknowledge and honor the fruits of what we have sewn thus far in the year. We will welcome the coming of darker days ahead where we can take the time to look inward as well as rest while more time is spent indoors. We look forward to seeing you in ceremony and celebration of Autumn in the tranquil garden.

Activities: We are going to create apple spice potpourri, play cornhole, honor each other with a Water Ceremony, and enjoy seasonal food and drink.

Please note: Everyone is encouraged to bring a dish. Email 158thstgarden@gmail.com or call the garden contact Timothy Brown at (410) 253-7067 for coordination of bringing items to the potluck. Those partaking who don't contribute to the potluck, please donate $3 towards the potluck.

In this hands-on class with historic gastronomist Sarah Lohman, you’re going to learn how to cook over an open fire. But what you’ll really learn are the primal cooking skills that will make you a better cook in your daily life.

We’re going to cover the four basic cooking techniques: baking, roasting, frying, and boiling. While preparing a meal on an outdoor hearth, you’ll learn how to tell temperature without a thermometer, how to tell the doneness of food by using all of your senses, and how to build a bad-ass fire.

The skills you will learn in this 3-hour session will allow you to amaze your friends on your next camping trip; put on an old-timey costume and cook at a historic house; or simply become a better, more intuitive home chef.

The cost of the class includes a light meal you will help to make: A vegetarian spring soup, rusks (a fried bread), grilled meat, and dessert.

Join us for the 34th Annual Medieval Festival in Fort Tryon Park! This festival brings to life the customs and spirit of the Middle Ages.

Fort Tryon Park is transformed into a medieval market town decorated with bright banners and processional flags. Performers, guests, and festival goers dress in medieval costume. Visitors are greeted by authentic period music, dance, magic, and minstrels, as well as jugglers and jesters. The afternoon is concluded with a thrilling joust between four knights on horseback. Costumed vendors will be on hand to demonstrate and sell a wide variety of medieval crafts as well as food and drink. Experience the culture of a bygone era against the backdrop of the Cloisters museum and the Hudson River during autumn's peak. We invite all ages to join us for this unique experience.

The festival is held in the area surrounding the world famous Cloisters, a magnificent museum of medieval art located in northern Manhattan.

The event is free but Medieval crafts, clothing, etc., and food will be available for purchase.
