Join us to explore this incredible natural resource in the heart of NYC.

The Ridgewood Reservoir in Highland Park is a 50+ acre natural oasis that straddles the border of Brooklyn and Queens. Built in 1859 to supply the once independent City of Brooklyn with high quality water, it became obsolete with the addition of new reservoirs in the Catskills in the 1950s and was decommissioned in the 1980s. Since then, nature took its course in a perfect case study of ecological succession. A lush and dense forest has grown in its two outside basins while a freshwater pond with waterfowl sits in the middle basin.

Local historian James Driscoll and horticultural specialists Fred Gerber and Chuck Wade lead an informative tour highlighting key figures and features of this park-like burial ground.

Established in 1853, the cemetery is a testament to Flushing’s arboreal and horticultural heritage. As Flushing was a center for horticultural nurseries through the 19th century, the grounds offer a notable array of spring-flowering trees and shrubbery. The walking tour is co-sponsored with The Voelker Orth Museum. The tour group meets at 1:45 p.m. near the door to the Flushing Cemetery Chapel, inside the main gate.

Flushing Cemetery is a picturesque non-sectarian cemetery on over 75 countryside acres. The cemetery was first established on the 20 acre farmland of John Purchase, when Queens’ population was 20,000 and expanded in 1875. It is the final resting place of many Bayside Quaker families and such notables as Louis Armstrong, Bernard Baruch, Dr. Adam Clayton Powell, Sr., Vincent Sardi Sr., and Dizzy Gillespie. The Voelker-Orth family who endowed the museum in Flushing are also buried in Flushing Cemetery.

NYC H2O is offering free tours of the Ridgewood Reservoir.

The Ridgewood Reservoir in Highland Park is a 50+ acre natural oasis that straddles the border of Brooklyn and Queens. Built in 1859 to supply the once independent City of Brooklyn with high quality water, it became obsolete with the addition of new reservoirs in the Catskills in the 1950’s and was decommissioned in the 1980’s. Since then, nature took its course in a perfect case study of ecological succession. A lush and dense forest has grown in its two outside basins while a freshwater pond with waterfowl sits in the middle basin.
